Approval of the Minutes of last years AGM held on 19 May 2016 at the Chinese Club 2. Receipt of the HKPS Committee s latest Annual Report. 3. Adoption of the Hon. Treasurer s Report. 4. 2 HONG KONG STAMPEX 2017 March 3-5, /F Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Hong Kong Hong Kong Stampex 2017 opened on March 3 and came to a smooth closing on the 5th. This has been one of the most participated national exhibitions in Hong Kong and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the exhibitors (48, including Court of Honor) and booth holders (12), without your continued support this would not have materialized. The Jury members head by the Jury President Mr Malcolm Hammersley include Mr Stephen Chan (Jury Secretary), Mr Mak Che King, Mr Daniel Szeto, Michel & Jenny Roland (APF) and apprentice jurors Mr Juai Lively exhibition entrance area (photo: Vincent Lian) Wai Chung and Mr Danny Wong. The expert team made a review of all the exhibits in the competitive classes and judging team was also asked to refer any doubtful items for review, a total of ten doubtful items were found and they have to obtain certificates for future exhibitions. The Hongkong Post was most helpful in sending out 550 posters to schools weeks ahead of the show resulting in many school children attending, our future philatelists cannot be ignored and the society will definitely try our utmost best to both promote and educate. A special section of Picture Post Card exhibits were brought over by the Australian Philatelic Federation, they were judged and awards granted according to the APF national class award levels, the Hong Kong jurors had a great learning session from Michel and Jenny Roland, the experts from Australia. A total of five Gold, three Large Vermeil, five Vermeil and one Silver-bronze medals were awarded. The D'Almada Cup (best multi-frame exhibit amongst the competitive classes by a Hong Kong exhibitor) goes to Exhibit #2 (Mr Patrick At the Opening Ceremony (photo: Vincent Lian) Choy) and the Philachina Trophy (candidate with an exhibit which has received FIAP/FIP Large Vermeil medal or above within the last 5 years) goes to Exhibit #1 (Ms Anna Lee). Awards in One-frame Class and Open Class are represented by certificates according to the scoring system adopted by the FIP. A Special Prize donated by Mr Choi Cheong-Too goes to Exhibit #11 (Mr Gary Brown of Australia), highest scored exhibit. Another Special Prize donated by the Hongkong Post goes to Exhibit #9 (Mr Takeshi Omura), Best Improved Exhibit (from Open Class to Postal History Class), well done Mr Omura, the three years of hard work is worth it. The expert team made a review of all the exhibits in the competitive classes. Judging team was also asked to refer any doubtful items for review. 5 GRANDEUR OF BYGONE ERA Repulse Bay Hotel Picture Post Cards Anna Lee The Picture Post Card exhibits brought over by the Australian Commissioners Michel and Jenny Roland at Hong Kong Stampex 2017 last weekend provided us with insight into new collecting angles. The twenty four frames representing three five framers and nine one-frame exhibits gave us an array of picturesque materials topped with bountiful of information. Surely an eye-opener for all of us who have collected picture post cards one way or the other in our different stages in life. Presented here are several picture post cards of the old colonial-style Repulse Bay Hotel, built by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels and opened in 1920 by Sir Reginald Edward Stubbs, KCMG, Governor of Hong Kong. For us Hongkongers, it was the perfect place for English afternoon tea with the breezy and balmy air drifting in from The South China Sea. A true nostalgic monument in the history of Hong Kong, It was such a pity when it was almost totally demolished in 1983, the only thing kept and left behind was some of the tiles and tinted glass in the Bamboo Bar. I certainly missed everything in the good old days. The new structure no matter how close the owners stuck to the original design can never be the same and it isn t the same. Used during World War II as a stronghold and a hospital by the British forces. Featured in the 1955 film Love is a Many Splendid Thing, also the 1978 Coming Home, renowned Chinese writer Eileen Chang arranged the leading roles to meet at the hotel in her novel Love in a Fallen City. Ernest Hemingway stayed at the hotel in the 1940 s and also Marlon Brando was a guest in the 1950 s. Spain s Crown Prince Juan Carlos and Crown Princess Sofia spent their honeymoon there with other royal guests including Prince Axel of Denmark and Prince Peter of Greece, just to mention a few in the endless list of celebrities patronising the hotel. 6 The moving of Tseung Kwan O Post Office over a weekend 4 th Feb 2017: last day at Hau Tak Estate; with philatelic date stamp 6 th Feb 2017: first day at Ming Tak Arcade; with TKO regular date stamp K.K.Tsui Revitalisation of Historic Buildings in Hong Kong II Issue Date: Design: Eric CHAN Revitalisation of Historic Buildings in Hong Kong II introduces three revitalised buildings, namely Viva Blue House, the Green Hub and Stone Houses Family Garden under Batch II of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme, as well as Oi!, PMQ and the Mallory Street revitalisation project. Enhanced with a hot foil printing effect, this set of stamps highlights the new uses of these buildings after revitalisation. Moreover, application of Augmented Reality (AR) technology to these stamp designs offers collectors a whole new philatelic experience. 8 Forthcoming philatelic highlights: The 2017 Journal of HKPS, a bilingual publication, was published on 3 rd March concurrent to the Stampex. Local members: if you have not already picked up your copy, you may pick up anytime in the PhilaChina during office hours. Overseas members: journals will be dispatched by surface mail. It could be delivered by air mail if you pay for the additional postage. Extra copies are available to members against a cover price of $100. The Chinese Philatelic Association will hold a stamp exhibition in the City Hall, Central, on 11 th 13 th April to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of the founding of the Hong Kong SAR. The HKPS Annual General Meeting will be held on 18 th May 2017 at PhilaChina. Expats Well Pampered Macau Fan Macau experienced a period of hardship during the Second World War. But this statement apparently is true only to the local Chinese population. General supply to foreigners was not at all deficient, especially before the outbreak of the Pacific War. In fact, expatriates who were lucky enough to station in Macau, enjoyed all the privileges this tiny enclave could offer. Rush Clark, who was the station manager of PAA, the major American concern in Macau at that time, wrote about his life in Macau in a letter (fig.1) to his friend at home. He was regarded as quite a millionaire and his income was within the top ten incomes in Macau. To him things were cheap. His cook was paid 23 Hong Kong dollars a month, and his chauffeur 35 Hong Kong. The letter was mailed on 24 October, 1941 (fig. 2), 37 days before the last PAA flight took off from Macau. However, Clark did not make use of the PAA airmail service to send his letter. He preferred to send it by surface mail instead which cost him only 20 avos. HKPS 2017/03 8-8
