3 p_03. The Sunshine Coast is one of the largest and fastest growing regional economies in Australia, with business opportunities emerging in every industry, especially food and agribusiness. On the Sunshine Coast, food and agribusiness is a $670 million industry with a wide range of outputs, from seafood and strawberries to plant nurseries and dairy. The region is a foodie s haven, with over 400 food tourism operators and an abundance of annual food festivals drawing visitors from across the world. One of Australia s leading demographers, Bernard Salt, has tipped the region s population to grow from about 350,000 today to about 550,000 by Currently the greater Sunshine Coast region has a catchment of around 800,000 people, with strong population growth predicted. According to Salt, the Sunshine Coast is being activated by investments in infrastructure like an expanded airport, which will see it become as connected to Asian markets as it is to the rest of the country. The agribusiness industry is one of the seven high value industries that is playing a pivotal role in building and shaping the Sunshine Coast economy. This report provides a look inside the food and agribusiness landscape on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast Council hopes to inspire industry innovators and entrepreneurs to consider the opportunities available in the region and make contact to discuss future growth plans. Industry value The Sunshine Coast agribusiness industry employs 5000 people and has made strong productivity growth during the past five years, now injecting around $670 million into the economy. Some of the high value sectors within the industry are poultry, which contributes 41% of the value of primary production; seafood (20%) and strawberries, pineapples and ginger (26%). Cattle and dairy and a range of smaller businesses make up the remaining 13%. The Sunshine Coast also has a vibrant value-adding sector which contributes some $250 million to the agribusiness sector. Wild caught seafood accounts for 27% ($185 million) of the Sunshine Coast s total food and agribusiness production and 26% of Queensland s wild caught seafood production. Strawberries, pineapples, ginger and macadamias are a $50 million industry and growing. Ginger production is up by 32%, macadamia production and value increased for the three years to 2015 and significant production increases have been seen in cultivated turf (+13%). Industry composition Large farms which sell to wholesalers and retailers. Processors and wholesalers which sell predominately to retailers. Right now is an exciting time for Sunshine Coast food and agribusiness, with plenty of opportunities to create and grow. Market profile Sunshine Coast food and agribusiness production is distributed domestically and overseas. 33% stays on the Sunshine Coast 50% goes to other parts of Australia 17% is exported Strong export support The Sunshine Coast Council has created a pathway for companies wanting to export through a range of programs including face-to-face networking events, connection through the Sunshine Coast Export LinkedIn Group, introductory export workshops and coffee catch-ups with export experts. Businesses can access the subsidised Export and Global Capability Program, presented for council by leading international trade specialists and facilitated by the Export Council of Australia. Nutri-Tech Solutions Nutri-Tech Solutions is Australia s biggest exporter of sustainable agricultural inputs and organically certified products. They work with multi-national food producers, consult to governments internationally and are recognised as world leaders in the sustainable agricultural and horticultural input market. Winner Sunshine Coast Business Awards for Sustainability Solutions and Business of The Year Distributes nationally and has 124 products in its range, 63 of which are certified organic and 32 are internationally certified. Exports to more than 50 countries. Has four brands across agriculture/ horticulture, home gardens, human health and education categories. 6 p_6. 15 fast food facts 1 Rich soils, a favourable sub-tropical climate and a clean water supply make the Sunshine Coast an ideal food and agribusiness location. The region also has a high and reliable rainfall, with predictable temperatures and an average of more than 300 days of sunshine a year. 2 The Sunshine Coast is home to 900+ agricultural businesses and a strong diversity of primary and value-added products. The industry is being strengthened by the emerging opportunities and resilience of the Sunshine Coast processing sector, which recorded a 13% value increase in 2016 compared to the year before. Walker Seafoods Australia Walker Seafoods Australia is a Sunshine Coast based tuna company that operates the length of Australia s east coast. The company is known for its high quality, export-grade tuna and its Yellowfin Tuna is the only MSC certified Yellowfin Tuna in the world. Walker Seafoods is the largest company in the Eastern Tuna Billfish Fishery (ETBF), a Commonwealth Fishery managed by The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA). AFMA is responsible for managing sustainable use of Australia s fisheries Winner, Sunshine Coast Business Awards, Agribusiness Medallist in the Delicious Produce Awards for line-caught swordfish. Owns four vessels, has six skippers and 33 crew plus a shore-based management team. Exports to the USA, Japan and Switzerland.
7 p_7. Gourmet Garden The Sunshine Coast is home to agribusiness disruptor Gourmet Garden, which produces Australia s most visible retail product in the world. The cold blended herb and spice pastes and lightly dried herbs are made on the Sunshine Coast and sold globally on 25,000 supermarket shelves in 15 countries. The company grows, harvests and packages prepared herbs and spices for busy cooks who value freshness. Gourmet Garden s farmers grow herbs on broadacre organically certified farms across Queensland and the herbs are processed in the hinterland town of Palmwoods. Australian Product of the Year Award 2015 (Herb & Spice Winner) for Lightly Dried Herbs. Exports to North America, United Kingdom, Europe, South-East Asia and New Zealand. World Star Award from the World Packaging Organisation Winner multiple Australian Packaging Design Awards & Good Design Australia Award Mooloolaba is the largest volume wild caught tuna port in Australia, receiving 75% (4,500 tonnes) of Australia s wild caught tuna. It is also the biggest swordfish port in Australia and home to the most sustainable sashimi grade tuna in the world. The food and agribusiness industry has experienced strong productivity growth over the last five years and now generates approximately $670 million in turnover and provides more than 5,000 jobs. The Sunshine Coast Council, along with its Economic Futures Board, has established a Food and Agribusiness Taskforce. Objectives include increasing jobs and average incomes and increasing the value of export and value-add. The Sunshine Coast has some of the most affordable business operating costs and lowest payroll tax in Australia. Major infrastructure projects are delivering new opportunities. For example, the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital will need up to 1.5 million meals a year and the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion will allow for greater and direct access to international markets.
8 p_8. 8 Latest figures show some of the highest levels of business confidence in Queensland: roughly 90% of businesses said they expect to maintain or increase profits, staffing and capital investment With $5 billion plus private sector investment and $2.5 billion plus public sector investment, the Sunshine Coast has evolved into a world-class business and investment option. Sunshine Coast based Gourmet Garden is Australia s most visible food product in the world, with herbs in a tube and lightly dried herbs on shelves in 14,000 retail outlets across five continents. Positioned on the doorstep of Asia and the Pacific Rim, the Sunshine Coast is well connected to national and international markets, with easy access to ports, airports and trucking. The Sunshine Coast Airport is regularly adding new, direct flight routes for business travel. Four Cow Farm Four Cow Farm manufactures 100% natural skin care products for sensitive skin. The range includes washes, lotions, oils and balms, especially prepared for infants and mothers. Based in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Four Cow Farm is set amongst lush, green countryside and takes full advantage of the Blackall Range s fertile soils. Family owned and operated, the company began as an export business and continues to focus on exporting, with the ready support of the Sunshine Coast Council. Achieved certification as an Australian Certified Organic producer in Products have been profiled in British Vogue and Harper s Bazaar. Exports to Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates. 12 A November 2016 industry research report has identified increasing demand for high quality seafood. Reasons include the increasing Sunshine Coast population; the increasing consumption of seafood and the increasing interest in safe, high quality, sustainable seafood (bibliography item 4).
9 p_ The report also identified growth in the value of seafood exports as an opportunity. Currently the region s largest seafood export markets are Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, the USA and China. Value-adding waste was also identified as an area of potential opportunity for the Sunshine Coast seafood industry. Looking for commercial or industrial land? Opportunities abound within the Sunshine Coast Enterprise Corridor, Caloundra to the Sunshine Coast Airport. This coastal strip is expected to accommodate more than 70% of the predicted population and new business investment needs over the next 20 years. 15 The Sunshine Coast Council works with state, federal and local governments and education, community, industry and innovation partners to grow the value of the food and agribusiness industry. The Queensland Government has a target of doubling food production in Queensland by 2040 and agriculture is one of its four pillars of economic development. The foodpreneurs will learn practical applications in testing the market, engaging with industry leaders and growing business revenue. The Food & Agribusiness Network (FAN) is a membership-based, not-for-profit company established to support the food and agribusiness industry in the Greater Sunshine Coast region, including the Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Noosa and Moreton Bay. FAN is a meeting point where food and agribusiness members along with affiliated services are encouraged to share ideas, Who s here In just over 12 months and with strong support from the Sunshine Coast Council, FAN has harnessed a groundswell of support and gained 150 members, who benefit from industry and market information and networking and training events. FAN s vision is to actively contribute to the doubling of the region s food and agribusiness economy by 2030 and to be renowned for food culture and innovation.
