2 Oversupply and global economic downturn to dominate China Maritime Week The global maritime industry is bracing for a challenging year ahead, and there is an increasing need for the industry to get together and discuss the wide range of issues that will have to be addressed. China Maritime Week, to be held in Hong Kong from February 28 to March 1, will provide a platform for industry leaders from Asia, Europe and the US to discuss issues and formulate ideas to overcome the looming crisis for the shipping industry. There is intense activity throughout the region in ship-owning, ship-building, ship-repair, naval architecture, port operations, tugs, work boats, ferries, tourism, commercial fishing, naval, police and coast guard, and pollution control. Arthur Bowring, managing director of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, sees the event as a good opportunity for debate and discussion for industry leaders. Shipowners are facing a challenging year in 2012, as oversupply and the global economic downturn are having negative impacts on shipping, he said. China Maritime Week will provide a good platform for the shipping community to meet to discuss the way forward, share ideas and formulate strategy for the year ahead. Hong Kong is the ideal location for this event as a leading global maritime hub and the gateway to China. Mr Bowring is also moderating a Ballast Water Symposium at the Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) on February 29. In addition, Michael Grey, the noted UK-based maritime industry correspondent and commentator, is the latest confirmed speaker at a half-day seminar organised by the Hong Kong Young Shipping Professionals, to be held at HKCEC on February 28. One of the highlights of the week will be the Clean Ships, Seas, Shores and Ports Conference, with speakers from shipping, port groups, NGOs and environmental groups. The focus of the conference will be sustainability. Other confirmed events during China Maritime week will include a Nautical Institute conference, an INTERFERRY conference, an ACI Conference on Tugs and Harbour Craft, and a Marine Money Conference. The keynote social and networking event will be a charity dinner in aid of seafarers jointly organised by the Sailors Society of UK and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association. Delegates will include representatives from banking, government, military, shipping and the ports sectors. Neil Baird, founder and chairman of China Maritime, said: The maritime industry is at a crossroads, there are some tough decisions to be made to do with ship financing, the environment, new technology and manning. China Maritime Week incorporates specialist seminars and conferences for all of these sectors and is the first major maritime event of Worldwide maritime charity the Sailors Society is inviting companies attending China Maritime Week to join it as it hosts a spectacular fundraising dinner. The Sailors Society, which exists to enrich the lives of the world s 1.2 million seafarers through its network of port chaplains, is improving its presence in Asia as many of the maritime industry s key organisations are based in Hong Kong and Singapore. Seafarers spend many months away from home, isolated from their families, said Sailors Society director of fundraising Jan Webber. Whilst the ships they are working on can be travelling anywhere in the world, many of the shipping companies are based in Asia, so it s important Sailors Society also has a presence there. Port chaplain Jasper Del Rosario, based in Bataan, explained the impact the charity can have: Typhoon Basyang, just over a year ago, caused devastation in the Mariveles and tragically many seafarers lost their lives. The coastguard and other authorities gave us permission to visit the Fine dining with the Sailors Society crews who survived the chaos. We offered help with the victims immediate needs, distributing clothes and food as these were their most pressing requirements. Simple gestures, but they made all the difference to the seafarers. The services port chaplains provide would not be possible without the support of fundraising events such as the Hong Kong dinner where all funds raised will support merchant seafarers worldwide. Jan Webber explained: We are excited to be hosting this dinner and want our guests to feel at ease during the evening. In the UK it is fitting to wear more formal attire for such occasions but in Asia the traditions are different. We respect and embrace that and look forward to welcoming maritime industry guests from around the world. The Hong Kong dinner takes place on February 29, where supporters will enjoy a sumptuous meal in the elegant surroundings of the Shangri-La Hotel ballroom, thanks to Pacific Basin Shipping and the Noble Group, keen supporters of the charity s worldwide work. Popular sports presenter Dougie Donnelly will entertain guests with anecdotes of working with some of the biggest names in golf: Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and his long-time friends Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood and Sam Torrance, to name just a few. 5 Interferry s regional meeting at China Maritime on February 29 will the global trade association s CEO Len Roueche update existing and potential members on its fast-growing role as the ferry sector s leading forum and lobbyist. Mr Roueche will report on the association s recruitment drive membership currently stands at 226 operators and suppliers. He will also preview the 37th Interferry annual conference, scheduled for October in Dubai. The meeting s agenda will include feedback on a joint project with the IMO to stem ferry fatalities in the developing world. Interferry and the IMO staged the inaugural Regional Forum on Domestic Ferry Safety in Bali, Indonesia, in Interferry spreads the word December, attracting 74 participants. Delegate attendance was supported by additional funding from sources including the Australian maritime administration and four Interferry members from Australia Austal, International Marine Consultants, Riverside Marine and Baird Publications. Discussions ranging from crew training to weather forecasting led to an action plan being agreed covering issues such as accident reporting and guidelines on buying and running second-hand vessels. Roueche will also focus on Interferry s expanding activities as the industry s voice on regulatory issues. The association recently appointed former Stena Group director of sustainability Johan Roos as executive director of EU and IMO affairs, based in a newly-opened office in Brussels. Among other hot topics, he is currently leading Interferry s campaign on EU and IMO requirements for 0.1 percent fuel sulphur content in north European Emissions Control Areas by 2015 a target which the association argues is not only impossible in the timescale, but would also be counter-productive by prompting a modal shift to overland transport.
