3 MID WEST REGION The majority of our Mid West museum collections are curated and managed by volunteers who look forward to telling you about their local history through museum displays, publications and heritage trails. Where staff are also members of their local historical society they may be able to assist with genealogical information and photographs. General tourist information is available at Visitors Centres and Shire Offices throughout the region. The Heritage Precinct is home to the One Mile Jetty, Interpretive Centre and 1 Mile Station Restaurant plus a wide variety of heritage displays including the story of HMAS Sydney II and HSK Kormoran battle of 1941 and the Shearing Hall of Fame. Donation appreciated The extended Carnamah Museum was reopened in 2012 and contains a diverse collection of objects and photographs from Carnamah s agricultural, social, commercial and domestic past - from farm machinery through to household items. A large selection of historical information and photographs can also be found on the website. Donation appreciated Located just one kilometre east of town off the Bunjil Road is the large stone homestead built by the Macpherson family in the 1860s. Make an appointment to see inside or stop by at any time to see the exterior of the restored homestead, its ruinous outbuildings and machinery displays.the front verandah offers a nice view of the Carnamah townsite and surrounding farmland. CHAPMAN VALLEY SITE NAME: CHAPMAN VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY ADDRESS: East Terrace Nanson 6532 (just off Chapman Valley Road) OPEN: Wednesday 9am Midday Sunday 1pm 4pm ADMISSION: By donation Located in the original Chapman Valley Roads Board Building (circa 1913) and adjoining display sheds. The museum has an interesting range of farm machinery as well as an extensive illustrated display of local history of the Chapman Valley dating back 120 years. Information on family histories is available. There is a heritage trail in the Chapman Valley. Discover Here you can discover the real Shark Bay, full of natural wonders, world heritage, adventure and historic treasures of Dutch, English and French explorers from as early as World Heritage The Centre celebrates Shark Bay s bio-diversity of eco-systems and explores the area s World Heritage listing, natural landscape, bays, islands, lagoons, marine and terrestrial landforms and animals. Shark Bay is one of only 16 sites worldwide that satisfy all four criteria for World Heritage listing, boasts 10% of the world dugong population, and is home to dolphins, whales, manta rays, turtles, sharks, fish species and rare marsupials. The Centre The Centre utilises artefacts, specimens, models, photo galleries, illustrations, dioramas and electronic media to introduce visitors to all the major features of Shark Bay, Indigenous and European culture, maritime and pastoral history, the flora and fauna of the region and much more. Exhibits include some of the very interesting and colourful stories of the residents of Shark Bay; interviews with scientists and Department of Parks and Wildlife officers; a timeline dating back from 1616 to the present, displaying an old map that Captain Dirk Hartog and William Dampier illustrated while on voyage around our bays; and artefacts from the Zuytdorp ship wreck lost in The centre is arranged in three galleries: Living Place, Mapping Place and Experiencing Place. The displays take you on a most amazing journey around Shark Bay and across time, in company and conversation with those who have been part of this extraordinary place. Visit the cells and learn about ticket-of-leave men of the district. Brochures are available for a town heritage walk featuring 28 heritage sites, a self-guided tour of the Dongara Cemetery and beautiful walks around Port Denison. Housed in the Heritage listed former 1907 Town Hall, the Gallery cares for the City of Greater Geraldton Art Collection, comprising over 450 artworks. The collection boasts works by local and West Australian contemporary artists, and historically significant works by Norman Lindsay, Robert Juniper, Howard Taylor, Hans Heysen, Elizabeth Durack and more. Recent renovations in 2014 now provide a vibrant exhibition interior. The Gallery conducts education and youth activities, including artist s talks and children s programs. Suggested donation $5. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the Western Australian Museum - Geraldton celebrates the rich heritage of the land, sea and people of the Mid West. Visitors can enjoy guided tours focusing on major shipwrecks in the region including the Batavia and learn more about the discovery of HMAS Sydney (II). Discover ancient landforms, Yamaji history and culture, and the region s natural landscapes and marine environment. The Museum shop has a wide range of books, souvenirs and gifts. ADMISSION: Free entry The importance of preserving our local heritage is highly valued by the City of Greater Geraldton. Our region is steeped in history, from the recognition of Aboriginal stories and culture, to the sagas of shipwrecks and early exploration. Themes of colonial expansion, migration, the war years, and the development of a progressive port and district, are all exciting historical journeys awaiting your discovery. The Geraldton Regional Library provides a gateway to these stories which make up the vibrant heritage of our region. The Local Studies Collection includes books, photographs, oral history recordings, newspapers, maps, cemetery indexes and other ephemera items. The City also proudly supports three local community-run museums, namely the Greenough Museum and Gardens, the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage Museum and the Walkaway Station Museum. Each Museum offers a unique window into the past, with fascinating displays, exhibits and memorabilia which will inspire and enthral. What do the Greenough Museum and Gardens and the National Gallery of Australia have in common? They both have in their collections a sketch by Tom Rand of the disastrous flood that occurred at Greenough in SITE NAME: LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS COTTAGE ADDRESS: 355 Chapman Rd, Bluff Point, Geraldton PHONE: gtonhistsoc@wn.com.au OPEN: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10am 3.30pm Set amongst shady trees with a rotunda for public use at the rear, the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage, built in 1876, is the Geraldton Historical Society s headquarters and, archival centre with an extensive collection of historic photographs, members lending library, and reference and research books. Among the displays are many heritage lifestyle objects including a collection of antique lace and china. A Walkaway Charity Queen! This photo shows Dorcas [Mrs M.J.] Logue being crowned Charity Queen in Geraldton in Dorcas was crowned for her fund raising efforts for wounded soldiers during WWI. 6 SITE NAME: VICTORIA DISTRICT HOSPITAL (BILL SEWELL COMPLEX) ADDRESS: Cnr Chapman Road and Bayley Street, Geraldton PHONE: OPEN: Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm (tours 2 pm Tuesday and Friday) ADMISSION: Free entry The historical display dates back to The Victoria District Hospital was officially opened on 23 rd June 1887 timed to coincide with celebrations for Queen Victoria s Golden Jubilee and operated as a hospital until In February 2012 the national Trust of Australia (WA) allotted space in the foyer of Victoria House for a permanent display. Members of the Ex-victoria District Hospital Staff Association (EVDHSA) have created an exhibition of the artefacts and photographs of the building s long history housed in acrylic showcases. SITE NAME: GREENOUGH AND GARDENS ADDRESS: 11 Phillips Road (just off the Brand Highway 19km south of Geraldton or 4.5km north of Central Greenough Historical Settlement) PHONE: WEBSITE: pioneer_museum@westnet.com.au OPENING HOURS: Daily 9.30am 3.30pm for Adults and Groups. Accompanied children under 16 free. Discover the social history of Greenough set up in the spacious rooms of what was once the largest house in this area (built between for John & Elizabeth Maley). Wander through Elizabeth s Garden and the Community Vegie Garden. View the historic trees (including what could be Australia s oldest leaning gum tree). The museum s aim is to provide an interpretation of life of the Greenough Flats from Aboriginal times to today. This is no longer your traditional house museum. Prepare to be surprised. GREENOUGH SITE NAME: CENTRAL GREENOUGH (HISTORIC SETTLEMENT) ADDRESS: Brand Hwy, Greenough 6532 PHONE: nationaltrust.org.au/wa/heritage-places centralgreenough@bigpond.com OPEN: Daily 9am - 4pm, Public Holidays and February: 10am 4pm. National Trust members free. Central Greenough (historic settlement) is a collection of 11 historic buildings from the 19th century, including a police station, courthouse and gaol, convent, two consecrated churches, a State school, Presbytery and a community hall. Most buildings are open and contain a range of furnishings and exhibitions telling their varied stories including an 1898 school Busary Exam for visitors to try. There is also a modern café, visitor centre and gift shop at the entrance to the settlement which offers home cooked food, great coffee, beers, wines, a large selection of teas, homemade cakes, scones and biscuits in the modern, air-conditioned café and alfresco area. Ask about the monthly Sunday market. GWALIA SITE NAME: GWALIA GHOST TOWN & ADDRESS: Tower St, Gwalia 6438 PHONE: MOBILE: museum@gwalia.org.au OPEN: Daily 10am 4pm. Closed over the Christmas and New Year period Gwalia Ghost Town & Museum focuses on the Sons of Gwalia gold mining operations from 1897 to The collection includes machinery, tools, documents and photographs. The only wooden incline head-frame left in the country and the first passenger tram which transported commuters between Gwalia and Leonora in 1903 can also be viewed at the museum. The abandoned miners cottages are a stark contrast to the mine manager s house commissioned by Herbert Hoover in Hoover later became the 31 st President of the United States. Today Hoover House is beautifully restored for visitors to wander through or stay in the bed and breakfast
7 MORAWA SITE NAME: MORAWA DISTRICT HISTORICAL ADDRESS: Prater St, Morawa 6623 PHONE: or members.westnet.com.au/caladenia/ OPEN: Monday to Saturday 9am 4pm in tourist season and by request ADMISSION: $2 for ages 16 and over The Morawa District Historical Society houses many displays, including a folk and windmill display and a tractor and shearing display, as well as a collection of farming machinery, household items, and shells and minerals. There is also a Blacksmith shop where visitors can witness a display by a Blacksmith during special events. MULLEWA SITE NAME: MONSIGNOR HAWES PRIEST HOUSE ADDRESS: Doney St, Mullewa 6630 (entry off Bowes Street) PHONE: OPEN: Daily 10am 2pm July to September ADMISSION: $2 The Priest House was designed and built by the internationally renowned priest/architect Monsignor John Hawes whose numerous ecclesiastical and domestic buildings are well known in the Mid West region. Items to view include furniture of the time, artworks, books, vestments, photos and various personal notations by Monsignor Hawes. Parish Priest in Mullewa for many years, Hawes was the architect, builder, construction labourer and general procurer of fittings. This unique building is an intensely personal work, reflecting his own character and ideas and hence this unique building along with the adjacent landmark Church of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, is an intensely personal work. NEW NORCIA SITE NAME: NEW NORCIA & ART GALLERY ADDRESS: Great Northern Highway, New Norcia 6509 PHONE: info@newnorcia.wa.edu.au OPEN: Daily 10am 4.30pm November to July and 9.30am 5pm August to October. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day.. Town tours also available. New Norcia is Australia s only monastic town and home to a living community of Benedictine monks. The Museum and Art Gallery rest within the wider context of the town s richly decorated buildings inspired by early 20th century Barcelona. Over five interpretive spaces introduce New Norcia s story as an Aboriginal mission, an educational centre and as a place of culture and hospitality. A gallery of contemporary religious art sits as a dynamic juxtaposition between these spaces and times. NORTHAMPTON SITE NAME: CHIVERTON HOUSE ADDRESS: 80 Hampton Road (National Highway 1), Northampton 6535 PHONE: OPEN: Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun 10am 12pm and 2pm 4pm. ADMISSION: Adult $3 Chiverton House was built by Captain Samuel Mitchell, the manager of the Geraldine Mine between It later housed the local branch of the Western Australian Bank and today, the town s museum. Exhibits cover the town s development, including restored farm machinery, photographic displays and rooms that show early settler life. The museum has relics and a working model of the Bray steam traction engine, Australia s first self-propelled vehicle. The town and surrounds has several heritage walks and drives. SITE NAME: LYNTON HERITAGE SITE INCLUDING THE CONVICT HIRING DEPOT AND SANFORD HOUSE ADDRESS: Off Port Gregory Rd, Northampton 6535 Browse around the recently interpreted Convict Hiring Station. ADMISSION: Free entry Built in the late 1940s, the building now the Sandstone Museum & Visitor Centre previously served the town as a grocery/hardware store, fuel depot and agricultural supplies business. Purchased and restored by the Shire of Sandstone in the late 1990s, this iconic, corrugated iron structure now houses exhibits which focus on gold mining, the pastoral industry and local flora. Visit us for a unique, remote, outback experience. WALKAWAY SITE NAME: WALKAWAY STATION ADDRESS: 2 Padbury Rd, Walkaway 6528 PHONE: info@walkawaymuseum.org.au OPEN: 10am 4pm Tues - Fri and 1pm 4pm Sat - Sun Closed summer, visit by request Walkaway Railway Station is one of the oldest stations in WA. It was opened in 1887 and is the junction of the Geraldton- Walkaway Government line and the private Midland Railway from Perth. The Midland Railway Company became part of Westrail in A recently constructed railway shed houses a steam loco and carriage on loan from Rail Heritage WA.The old loco B6 is housed in the old goods shed and it is hoped to organise volunteers to help restore it. The museum has a large collection of family memorabilia and local histories along with railway memorabilia and records of deaths in the area. WONGAN HILLS SITE NAME: ADDRESS: OPEN: ADMISSION: WONGAN HILLS DISTRICTS AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY Cnr of Camm St and Mitchell St, Wongan Hills 6603 Sunday 1pm 4pm and by appointment during the week Fees apply The museum is located in the town s old hospital and as well as medical exhibits the museum has displays of photographs and many aspects of the town s development. There is a town heritage walk and tourist information is available at the bakery and roadhouse on Fenton Street. WUBIN SITE NAME: WUBIN WHEATBIN ADDRESS: Great Northern Hwy, Wubin 6612 PHONE: wheatbinmuseum@bigpond.com OPEN: Daily 10am 3pm June to mid October ADMISSION: Free entry The museum is located in the heritage wheatbin (1939) and features the history of wheat handling from bags to bulk. Also the story of builder turned farmer Gus Liebe. The adjoining machinery annexe features one man s collection of vintage cars, machinery, story of No. 2 Rabbit Proof Fence and much more. The Information centre at the old Railway Station houses a vast rock and mineral collection. YALGOO SITE NAME: YALGOO COURTHOUSE & CENTENARY OF FEDERATION GAOL & DOMINICAN CONVENT CHAPEL OF ST HYACINTH ADDRESS: Museum Court & Henty Street Yalgoo 6635 PHONE: Caravan Park or Shire Office OPEN: Daily. There are several heritage sites, including the Dominican Convent Chapel of St Hyacinth, the smallest building designed and built by Monsignor Hawes, and a signposted heritage walk through the town
