3 Captions Most of the captions on the stamps are the same as the photo-names as supplied by isite. A few were then later altered by isite as the artwork was being completed and proofs being signed off. However, as noted above, the proof-checkers were not as accurate as they might have been and several typos slipped through. They are: Wellington Matinborough, instead of Martinborough on 70c and 80c Vineyards stamps. Top of the South Able, instead of Abel on 70c and 80c Abel Tasman National Park stamps. Marlbourgh, instead of Marlborough on THREE different 70c and 80c Marlborough stamps: Sounds; Vineyards; and Picton. Canterbury Kaikora, instead of Kaikoura on all Kaikoura, Canterbury stamps. Lower South Island Sation, instead of Station on all Railway Station, Dunedin stamps. From the beginning of July the Air Mail Convention of London will come into force, and letters, postcards, commercial paper, printed papers and samples may be posted in New Zealand for dispatch to Australia, Canada and the United States for transmission by air mail services in those countries. Correspondence will also be accepted for transmission to Great Britain, and countries in Europe by the Karachi London air mail service. Letters must be specially addressed and the envelope must bear a special blue label, which will be affixed at the Post Offices on special application being made. Flags on Cricket stamps Update Thanks to Dr John S Sheppard of Christchurch, I can now report that the reason a shamrock was on the Ireland ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 stamp rather than the Irish flag, the Tricolour, was that the Ireland cricket team was a joint team comprising players from the Republic of Eire and Northern Ireland. Thus, as the national emblem of Ireland, the trefoil shamrock was selected to represent the combined Ireland ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 team. Fifty Years Ago From the CP Newsletter May 1965 New Zealand Notes and Comment by John Robinson Missing Colour: Usually reliable sources tell us of a new major find of a complete large sheet of the 1964 Health stamp 2½d+1d Tarapunga red colour omitted T36a(z). 4 5
4 Fifty Years Ago From the CP NZ Bulletin May 1965 NZ Stamps As I Have Come To Know Them by Campbell Paterson Selected World Postal History An eclectic offering of Postal History -- from GB 1847 Embossed to Registered Mail to Health FDC; a baker s dozen of offers. 4d. Mitre Peak 1935/1947. To reiterate, there was only one 4d. Mitre Peak on the Single watermark paper and this is easily separated from all later issues by its vertical mesh. The perf. is about 14 but this is not a suitable identifying factor since two later stamps had perfs about the same. Rely then, on the mesh, or the watermark if you must. The Single watermark issue (L7a) is known used with inverted watermark. It is rare thus and I cannot recall that I have ever seen it mint. Plate varieties are few, the most notable being some clumsy retouching of the letters of MITRE, giving elongated or otherwise abnormal letters. Occasionally the stamps were printed out of position on the sheet and in such cases copies are found with letters watermark from the watermark lettering NEW ZEALAND POSTAGE which appeared in the margins of all single watermark sheets. Turning now to the rest of the 4d s all with multiple watermarks. Some of these, the very last issues, were on the coarse war time paper. This is readily recognized by its roughness and the clarity of the watermark. Its perf. is 14 x 14.1 or 14.2, which is close to 14 all round so it is a poor identifying factor. Still, a perf. close to 14 coupled with a poor quality paper should be enough guidance for most. I have emphasized the necessity for recognition of the coarse paper because this common stamp (L7e) is far too often mistaken for the much scarcer issue L7c. There is little help to be got from the perfs in separating these two stamps, and I would advise every collector to look again at his copies of L7c. It can be taken as certain that unless the stamp has a fine quality, dense, smooth, white paper it is not L7c. Another good guide is the colour of the frames. In the true L7c the frame is always a grey-black, gunmetal shade, identical with the frames of the perf. 12½ issue and quite unlike the deep black-browns found in L7e. It is easy to mistake one s geese for swans but with the information above there is really no excuse for self-deception. More on the 4d. Mitre next month.
