1 03 Walk Buderim Nonmus Sawmill Shopping Centre, 7 Lindsay Road Around 1915 Woodford born Gilbert Nonmus established a sawmill at this site, chosen for the good spring water supply and the quantity of red cedar. In 1916, he sold his sawmill to the Lindsay family in order to enlist for service in WWI. He repurchased the sawmill on his return from the Great War in late Old Post Office 50 Burnett Street John Burnett conducted the post office from his general store, until the tram line was built in When the tramway closed in 1935, acting Postmaster, Jack Neil, designed the post office building, which was built by Mr Richards and completed in The building is now in community use Buderim Mountain Sugar Company Mill Shopping Centre, 15 Lindsay Road The sugar mill was financed by James Campbell, a Brisbane businessman and sawmiller. The mill began crushing in 1880 and was managed by J K Burnett from Pioneer Cottage. Due to difficult times, the mill was closed by the mortgagee in Krauss Engine Lindsay Road Gardens, Corner Burnett Street and Lindsay Road The Krauss was the first engine used on the BuderimPalmwoods Tramway ( ) to transfer farm produce and timber to the main line at Palmwoods for transportation to Brisbane. The engine has been refurbished by Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Inc. 05 Buderim-Palmwoods Tramway Terminus Buderim Pool Park, 44 Main Street Built in 1913/14 the terminus included a storage shed and an engine shed. The tramway operated between Palmwoods and Buderim from 1914 to The total construction cost of the tramway was 35,370, for a length of seven miles. Passengers paid two shillings six pence each way.

2 War Memorial Gates 42 Main Street The Memorial Gates were erected in 1953 and designed by Sybel Whittle. The gates were officially opened by WW1 veteran Hon. Sir Josiah Francis. The wooden gates, made of white beech, lasted 30 years and were replaced by a metal structure Methodist Church 2 Gloucester Road The original small Methodist Church was built in 1907 and is now the church hall. The new Methodist Church building was erected in 1963 and has been extended over the years. In 1977 the Methodist Church became part of the Uniting Church of Australia. St Mark s Church of England 7 Main Street St Mark s Church was built in 1917 by Mr Kuskopf, at a cost of 350. The Good Shepherd stained glass window was made by renowned English artist, William Bustard, in It is now in the east wall of the new church First Ginger Factory, 25 Main Street The first Ginger Factory was established in a disused blacksmith s shop at this site in Sixteen tons of ginger was received in the first season and the site proved too small. The factory was moved to the present Woolworths site in Buderim Mountain School 8 Main Street In 1875 Buderim s first school was built on the eastern slopes of the mountain. It was replaced in 1886 with a new building at the present school site. The pine plantation was planted by pupils in The area was used for trench drills during WWII. 08 Sion Singh s Grocery Store 2 Main Street In 1907 Sion Singh bought 10 acres at this site where he built a residence with a corner store and established a farm. He supplied fruit and vegetables to the local community and to the many tourists and day trippers who visited his property. 10 School of Arts Park 14 1 Main Street James Lindsay, Jr, ( ) founded the School of Arts in The building was replaced in 1924 and became known as the Memorial Hall in the 1960s. The hall was realigned in 1989, and a new entrance, designed by architect Lindsay Clare, was added. 11 Buderim Library building, 1 Main Street In 1887 James Lindsay Jr started Buderim Library from his home Ryhope, with books supplied by the Brisbane School of Arts. Soon after the library was moved into the Buderim School of Arts building. It moved to its present site in Middy s General Store 29 Main Street Ernest Middleton built a general store here in 1914, supplying food, farm equipment, clothing and all household needs. Although the buildings on this site have changed, the site is still affectionately known as Middy s.

3 Site of South Sea Islander Dwellings 8A Ballinger Court park From the 1880s slab huts, with hipped shingle roofs, were built here for the South Sea Islander labourers, who contributed significantly to the local sugar industry. The area was also a coffee plantation. 16 Pioneer Cottage 5 Ballinger Crescent Built by J K Burnett around 1882, this is one of the oldest surviving houses in Buderim. The shingle roof, stumps and verandah boards of the cottage have been replaced and the original detached kitchen demolished. At the rear, there was a baker s oven, large buggy shed, store house and blacksmith s shop. 18 Vandy s Garage 118 Burnett Street The first garage on Buderim was built on this site by George Burnett around Charlie Perkins bought it in 1941 and built the adjacent garage in the late 1950s. He sold it to Ken Pringle, who sold it to John (Vandy) Vandenberghe in It is still known as Vandy s Garage. 19 The first official record of Buderim was made in 1862 by Tom Petrie, when he explored the area to investigate its timber resources. The name Buderim derives from the Aboriginal word badderam for the Hairpin Honeysuckle, a type of Banksia, which grew on the lower slopes of Buderim Second Ginger Factory 67 Burnett Street Buderim s second Ginger Factory was built on this site in Reportedly, the factory produced 90 percent of the world s preserved ginger used in chocolate manufacture. In 1979, the business, by then called Merrybud Ginger, was relocated to Yandina and became Buderim Ginger. A colourful walk through history Lions Park 111 Burnett Street The Buderim Lions Club was formed in Soon after, its members commenced the development of the park, removing rocks and spreading fill to maximize the park area. Shelter sheds and tables were established and a ringroad constructed for vehicle access. 20 J & M Underwood Exhaust Manufacturers 129 Burnett Street In the 1950s John and Molly Underwood built this factory to manufacture exhaust systems. By the 1960s, they employed around 120 people. It has operated as Mercury Mufflers since the 1980s. The Kabi Kabi people were Buderim s original inhabitants, and there is a continued presence of Aboriginal people and their descendants in the area. In 1862 William Pettigrew, a Brisbane timber merchant, commissioned Tom Petrie to look for red cedar on the Sunshine Coast. Tom Petrie was guided to Buderim by a group of Indigenous people where he found forests of fine timbers. He is recorded as the first European to fell a tree on Buderim. In 1869 the area was surveyed for farm allotments. Early settlers later successfully grew coffee, bananas, sugar cane and citrus, before changing to the pest and disease-resistant ginger, which is now synonymous with Buderim. Two sugar mills operated between 1876 and 1889, until over-production caused a drop in sugar prices. Many South Sea Islanders were recruited as cheap labour from 1880 to 1930, and their descendants still live in the area.

5 Buderim Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Walk 4A Telco Road, Buderim The Buderim to Palmwoods tramway was a narrow gauge (2ft 6in) railway built to service the needs of the farmers and residents of Buderim and district. It enabled farm produce, fruit, and timber to access Brisbane via the main-line at Palmwoods. The first tram ran in 1914 and the last in A portion of the original railway remains, running behind Mons Road. The track has examples of the cut-and-fill process to create a gentle gradient for the train through the steep terrain. There are remnants of the original sleepers, and some rock faces show remains of the drill holes used to dynamite the rocks. Cost: Free. T E tram@buderim.qld.au Did you know? The walking track follows a path of approximately 2000 metres (4000 metres return). An information shelter is located at the base of the wheelchair friendly access ramp. Guided tours are available by appointment.

6 Buderim Pioneer Cottage 5 Ballinger Crescent, Buderim Pioneer Cottage is an original historic Buderim house built around Now a museum, the house remains a living piece of local history filled with heritage furniture, home wares, period decor, photographs, clothing and fascinating curios from our past. The Buderim Historical Society was established in 1966 and works to preserve and maintain the Pioneer Cottage, and the history of the area. Open: Monday to Saturday 11am to 3pm. Cost: Adults $5. Children $1. T Did you know? Pioneer Cottage was built by JK Burnett from local materials, including tallow wood, white beech and red cedar. The Burnett family occupied the house for nearly 65 years. In 1953 the house was purchased by Sybil Vise who, after realising its significance, donated the property to the Buderim War Memorial Community Association in The local community offered enormous support in the creation of a house museum, which was officially opened as Pioneer Cottage in 1967.
