2 New Zealand by Sea: Milford Sound to Auckland aboard the Caledonian Sky December 29, 2014 January 11, 2015 (13 nights/14 days) Explore New Zealand s magnificent natural beauty, epitomized by Milford Sound (cover); spectacular wildlife, including large and raucous royal albatrosses (above); and fascinating Maori culture. With its tidy English gardens and untamed wilderness, white-suited lawn bowlers and tattooed Maori elders, austere glacial fiords and boiling volcanic mud pots, New Zealand is a country of striking contrasts. Tour these lush green islands, from world-famous Milford Sound on the South Island to the city of Auckland on the North Island, aboard the Caledonian Sky, an ideal vessel for exploring this spectacular part of the world Learn about sheep farming a crucial part of New Zealand s economy during a visit to Walter Peak High Country Farm. Marvel at the sheer granite walls and tumbling waterfalls of Doubtful and Milford Sounds in Fiordland. Ashore on Stewart Island, listen to the strange ding-dong call of the bellbird, and at Taiaroa Head, observe the rare yelloweyed penguin in its natural habitat. Visit the Canterbury Museum s Hall of Antarctic Discovery for background on Operation Deep Freeze, headquartered in Christchurch. Explore the heartland of Maori culture in Rotorua and the stunning Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, which brings to life the history of New Zealand s native people. Throughout the program enjoy the insights and expertise of Professor Lawrence Buell as well as the perspectives of local naturalists and cultural guides. 3 HAA Study Leader Lawrence Buell, Powell M. Cabot Research Professor of American Literature, has taught the literatures and cultural history of the English-speaking world for more than half a century, and has been at Harvard since He has been a leader in the interdiscipline of ecocriticism (literature and environment studies) since the 1980s, and his many publications in this area span those decades, from New England Literary Culture (1986) and The Environmental Imagination: Thoreau, Nature Writing, and the Formation of American Culture (1995) to Writing for an Endangered World: Literature, Culture, and Environment in the United States and Beyond (2001) and The Dream of the Great American Novel (2014). His current research on comparative environmental cultures of the Anglophone world has immersed him in the study of New Zealand s literature, its history of environmental protection, and its dual heritages as a member of the British Commonwealth and as a bicultural Polynesian nation. Other Featured Lecturers Ronald Prinn, a native of New Zealand, is the TEPCO Professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT, director of the MIT Center for Global Change Science, and co-director of the MIT Joint Program on Science and Policy of Global Change. He will discuss the effects of climate change in the U.S. and New Zealand, including ways to lower the risks of climate change and why global warming is a sometimes politically contentious subject. John Brady, Mary Elizabeth Moses Professor of Geosciences at Smith College since 1975, has co-organized National Science Foundation funded workshops about teaching mineralogy and petrology and considers New Zealand s volcanoes, glaciers, and active faults an ideal classroom for learning about the earth. Visit Queenstown, built around an inlet of Lake Wakatipu called Queenstown Bay in the South Island s Otago region, with spectacular views of nearby mountain ranges such as The Remarkables and Walter Peak.
