In the Channel Islands, admire the walled garden of La Seigneurie on tiny Sark, or tour the house on Guernsey where Victor Hugo wrote Les Misérables. Tender ashore on Tresco in the Scilly Isles to discover the terraced, subtropical Abbey Gardens. Mont St. Michel, the Cornish estate of Trelissick, and Agatha Christie s home near Dartmouth are additional options, or you may choose to delve into military history with an American cemetery visit and a walk on the beaches in England where U.S. troops practiced for the D-Day invasion. 3 HARVARD STUDY LEADERS Leo Damrosch, Professor of Literature, Emeritus at Harvard University Leo Damrosch received his undergraduate degree from Yale, his Ph.D. from Princeton, and was a Marshall Scholar at Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. Before coming to Harvard in 1989, he taught at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland at College Park. Professor Damrosch s most recent book is Tocqueville s Discovery of America. He is also author of the awardwinning biography Jean-Jacques Rousseau: Restless Genius, as well as seven other books on literary and historical subjects. Joyce Van Dyke, Lecturer in Extension, Harvard University Joyce Van Dyke has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a B.A. from Stanford. She has published articles on Shakespeare and other topics, and is a recipient of the Petra T. Shattuck Excellence in Teaching Prize. While teaching in Extension, she completed a master s degree in playwriting at Boston University. Her work has been developed, commissioned, and produced by theaters in Boston and beyond. The recipient of several distinguished awards for playwriting, Dr. Van Dyke is currently working on a new play. 4 SCHEDULE BY DAY DEPART U.S.A. Saturday, June 6 Depart on an overnight flight to Paris. PARIS / HONFLEUR, FRANCE / SEA CLOUD II Sunday, June 7 Upon arrival in Paris, drive to the old fishing port of Honfleur and embark Sea Cloud II for a seven-night cruise. Set sail in the early evening. Mont St. Michel La Seigneurie GUERNSEY / SARK, THE CHANNEL ISLANDS Monday, June 8 During a relaxing morning at sea, attend a lecture and view the scenic coast of Normandy. In the early afternoon, Sea Cloud II anchors off Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, occupied by German troops for most of World War II. Take a ferry to Sark to tour this small island by horsedrawn carriage and see the delightful walled garden of La Seigneurie. Alternatively, on Guernsey, visit the German Naval Signals HQ and the small RAF museum. Also stop at Hauteville House, where the exiled Victor Hugo lived and wrote for 15 years. Join the captain for a welcome cocktail reception and gala dinner. ST. MALO, FRANCE Tuesday, June 9 From the walled city of St. Malo, travel to the island where Mont St. Michel rises magically from the sea. Trace the footsteps of countless pilgrims and climb the winding lane up to the massive abbey. The adjoining cloisters are renowned for their lightness of scale, delicate columns, and fine ornamentation. Or stroll in the World War II Brittany American Cemetery and see the memorial chapel with stained-glass windows and views over the countryside. A local musical group will sing sea shanties before lunch on board, followed by an afternoon lecture. SCILLY ST. IVES ISLES LAND S FALMOUTH END DARTMOUTH GUERNSEY AT SEA / TRESCO SCILLY ISLANDS Wednesday, June 10 Enjoy a half day at sea as you cross the English Channel. In the early afternoon, Sea Cloud II threads a passage through the submerged landscape of the Scilly Isles for anchorage. Explore the glorious Tresco Abbey Gardens, set amidst the ruins of a 10th-century Benedictine monastery and renowned for their lush subtropical plants. With a mild winter climate, high walls, and hedges, the garden is home to plants from all around the world. Sail past Land s End before sundown on a course to the English mainland. 5 Honfleur harbor FALMOUTH, ENGLAND Thursday, June 11 Dock in Falmouth, a busy transatlantic port in the days of sail. A drive across the Cornish peninsula takes you to St. Ives, which has long attracted artists with its beautiful environs and quality of light. Visit the Barbara Hepworth Museum and stroll in its sculpture garden, then view the collections of the Tate St. Ives, a branch of the Tate Gallery. Alternatively, explore Trelissick, a British National Trust property on the estuary of the River Fal that features superb gardens and a small gallery of local art and crafts. DARTMOUTH, ENGLAND / AT SEA Friday, June 12 Greenway, perched above the River Dart on the English Riviera, was the holiday home of Agatha Christie and featured in several of her novels. See the reclusive mystery writer s extensive collection of books, furniture, and family treasures on display in this Georgian mansion. Or you may choose to travel to Slapton Sands and Torcross beaches where Allied troops conducted Operation Tiger to rehearse for the D-Day Landings. Return to Sea Cloud II for lunch and an afternoon sail. COWES / PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND Saturday, June 13 Step ashore at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, home of the Royal Yacht Squadron, to visit Osborne House, the favorite summer residence of Queen Victoria. The apartments are the epitome of Victoriana and remain exactly as she left them. The extensive gardens contain examples of every tree known to grow in England. During an afternoon at sea, attend a lecture and relax on deck as Sea Cloud II sails to Portsmouth. Celebrate your voyage at a festive farewell dinner. PORTSMOUTH / U.S.A. Sunday, June 14 Disembark in the morning and drive to London for the return flight home or continue on the optional postlude. Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden OPTIONAL PRELUDE NORMANDY June 3 to 7, 2015 Explore Normandy, whose light so attracted the Impressionists, and attend a special ceremony on the anniversary of D-Day. In Caen, visit the museum documenting the 1944 Battle of Normandy, and see the Abbaye aux Hommes, a Romanesque masterpiece. View the Bayeux Tapestry and stroll through the gardens of Château de Brécy. At Omaha Beach, see the American Military Cemetery and lay a memorial wreath. Discover Honfleur, with its fine art museum and half-timbered buildings. Accommodations are at the historic Château d Audrieu. At the Churchill Museum, hear excerpts from his speeches. Visit Westminster Abbey and St. Paul s Cathedral, where his funeral was held. Reservations are acknowledged in order of receipt until the maximum enrollment has been reached. Your final payment is due 120 days before departure and must be made by check. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfare, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change. While the tour operator will do everything possible to maintain the published trip price, it may be necessary to institute a surcharge. INSURANCE We highly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. An application for insurance will be provided by HAA Travels upon confirmation.
