2 HAA Study Leader Richard F. Thomas, George Martin Lane Professor of the Classics and Harvard College Professor, was educated at the University of Auckland and at the University of Michigan. He began his academic career at Harvard as assistant and associate professor, and then moved on to the University of Cincinnati and Cornell University before returning to Harvard. In the Department of the Classics he has served as both chair and director of graduate studies, and now chairs the graduate placement committee and the seminar on The Civilizations of Greece and Rome. He has served as director of the American Philological Association and as trustee of the Vergilian Society, of which he is currently incoming president. In his teaching, Professor Thomas is interested in all aspects of Greek and Roman literature and culture, and he is also much occupied by the reception of those cultures at various moments in the tradition of European and other civilizations. Other Featured Lecturer Albert Leonard, Jr., lecturer for co-sponsor Archaeological Institute of America, is Professor Emeritus in both the Department of Classical Archaeology and the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona. An archaeologist who specializes in the social impact of interregional trade among the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean, he has directed excavations around the Mediterranean (in Italy, Greece, Portugal, Egypt, Cyprus, Israel, and Jordan), co-founded an international field school in archaeological methods near Segesta, and published the results of this research in six books and more than 150 articles. Tonight, as Variety Voyager cruises past the volcanic island of Stromboli, find a place on deck to watch the night sky lit up by the volcano s constant activity. Variety Voyager (B,L,D) Sunday, September 21 Taormina With its beautifully situated 2nd-century Greco-Roman theater overlooking the sea and steaming Mt. Etna in the background, Taormina has long attracted visitors. Enjoy time to explore the town before driving to the flanks of the volcano for a private al fresco lunch in a family-owned vineyard. Variety Voyager (B,L,D) Monday, September 22 Vulcano / Lipari The Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago north of Sicily. At Vulcano see the steaming fumaroles and, if you wish, immerse yourself in the warm, therapeutic mud baths. Lipari, largest of the Aeolians, was infested with pirates until the late 19th century. Visit the archaeology museum, with exhibits dating from the Neolithic to the Classical period and one of the most complete collections of miniature Greek theatrical masks in the world. Variety Voyager (B,L,D) Tuesday, September 23 Erice / Segesta From the ramparts of the medieval village of Erice, atop 2,500-foot-high Mt. Erice, enjoy a sweeping panorama of western Sicily and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Wend your way down a maze of cobbled streets to the town s two castles and numerous churches. Then continue to the remarkably well preserved 5th-century Doric Greek temple at Segesta, which overlooks the beautiful Golfo di Castellammare. Variety Voyager (B,L,D) Wednesday, September 24 Amalfi / Ravello Cruise to the picturesque Amalfi Coast located south of Sorrento and anchor in Amalfi Bay. Today s options include an exploration of Ravello, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or an excursion to Naples and Herculaneum. Visit the Rufolo Villa, built by a wealthy Ravello patrician, mentioned in Boccaccio s Decameron, and believed to have inspired Richard Wagner s stage design of his opera Parsifal. (B) Details Activity Level: Moderate Co-sponsors: Smithsonian Journeys, Archaeological Institute of America Group Size: 63 maximum What to Expect This is a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy, and includes navigating uneven terrain at archaeological sites, walking on cobblestone pavement in small towns, and standing for up to two hours in museums or other sites. In some locations, such as at archaeological ruins, stairs are unavailable or do not have handrails. In addition, travelers must be able to board the ship via a metal gangplank with rope handrails and get into/out of bobbing tenders for shore excursions. Daytime temperatures during the trip will range from the high 70s to the low 80s F, with a chance of rain. Early mornings and evenings will be cooler, with temperatures in the low 60s. Participants with medical issues and/or dietary restrictions must make them known to us well before departure, and impairments regarding mobility must be disclosed prior to booking. 6 Variety Voyager Category B Cabin The Variety Voyager is a state-of-theart yacht that accommodates just 72 passengers in 36 cabins. Guests will enjoy her sleek lines and ample deck space. Cabins and public areas are finished with warm fabrics, rich marbles, and fine wood paneling.
