12 Heritage Tour This tour of Halton Hills will guide you through some of the most attractive, historic and intriguing rural landscapes, towns and hamlets of the Niagara Escarpment. Acton Acton, first called Danville, was settled in 1825 by the Adams brothers. The name was changed to Adamsville but in 1844, the postmaster suggested the name Acton, after his hometown in England. For over 100 years, the town was dominated by the leather tanning industry. The nickname, Leathertown, reflects this heritage. The Hide House, 49 Eastern Ave. This massive building was originally built in 1899 as a warehouse to store the Beardmore Tannery s hides. Horse drawn wagons took the hides, which had arrived by rail, to the tannery for processing and brought the tanned leathers back to be stored. Shoemaker Funeral Home, 55 Mill St. E. Sunderland Villa, was the home of W.H. Storey, owner of the Storey Glove Factory. After WWI, the building became a home for veterans, then a hotel and during the Depression it stood vacant until purchased by Victor Rumley and turned into a funeral home. Acton Town Hall, 19 Willow St. N. This grand old building of the Italianate style was built in 1882 for the municipal council and the town constabulary at a tendered cost of $4574. A lock up cell for unruly prisoners, is still in place today. In 1974 the building was slated for demolition but a citizens group formed to save it. In 1983 Heritage Acton purchased the building from the town for $1! Moorecroft, 98 Church St. E. The property was originally owned by the Adams family, founders of the town. In 1897, Henry Moore, owner of the Acton Free Press, built the gracious Queen Anne style home. Acton Syndicate Housing Heritage Conservation District - 69, 71, 75, 77, 79, 81, 83, 85, 87 & 89 Bower Street. Circa1882, Second Empire style semidetached brick residences built by local business owners for their workers. Ballinafad At the four corners, Trafalgar Rd and 32nd Sideroad, see the old general store, the old Ferguson Blacksmith shop on the southwest corner and the Ballinafad cemetery. The Hub. The original Ballinafad General Store was established on this site c with groceries and supplies for village and farm folk. A two storey frame building burned in 1905 and the present stone building replaced it. The Post Office was in the back, the storekeeper and his family lived on the upper floor and the barn stabled the horses for the stage run to Georgetown. Scotsdale Farm, Trafalgar Rd. This beautiful 500 acres of rolling meadows and forest offers access to some of the great trails of our town. Owned by S.G. Bennett, president of Acton s Beardmore Tannery. It was bequeathed to the Ontario Heritage Foundation. Limehouse Fountain Green was the original name of this picturesque little village. After the railroad was built in 1856, it became the site of a saw mill, blanket factory and paint factory. A trail leading to the restored lime kilns starts from the parking lot behind the Community Hall (formerly the Methodist and United Church). Georgetown George Kennedy, circa 1823, opened a mill which began a settlement known as Hungry Hollow. The Barber brothers bought a woolen mill and foundry from Kennedy in 1837 and renamed the settlement Georgetown. Baptist Church, 14 Main St. S. The brick structure was built in 1869 by the Baptist congregation which included the Dayfoot and Bessey families. The lofty spire is the focal point for many historical views of Georgetown s downtown. It was last used as a church by the Georgetown Alliance congregation in Shepherd s Crook, 86 Main St. S. This limestone building, built in 1879 as a hardware store, was the first Main Street property named a heritage building. Berwick Hall, 139 Main St. S. In 1882, this building was designed by Toronto architect Edward J. Lennox as the residence of John Roaf Barber, owner of the Georgetown Paper Mills & Barber and Ellis. We handle all insurance work. 354 Guelph Street, Georgetown Truck Accessories Upholstery Heavy Equipment Glass Window Tinting Cedarvale Park, 181, 183 & 185 Main Street South, (corner of Main and Maple Ave.). Includes Freeman-Bradley House, Cedarvale Community Centre and Cedarvale Cottage. Cedar Vale Farm was the site of Canada s first international humanitarian resettlement effort, rescuing orphans of the Armenian Genocide. From 1923 to 1928, young Armenians, known as the Georgetown Boys lived and worked on this farm. In 1928 it became the Ontario Home for Girls under the United Church and a public park in Halton Hills Public Library and Cultural Centre, Church St. Constructed circa 1877, the Gothic Congregational church was given to the people of Georgetown in the early 1900 s to be used as a library. Limehouse Nestled on the Niagara Escarpment, Limehouse has its history intertwined with the mining of limestone. In 1840 a company began burning limestone in kilns to extract the ash. The fly ash was used for concrete. Remnants of the kilns can still be seen today and they are a part of the Limehouse Conservation Area. Rain waters chemical action with limestone over the years created many caves and tunnels which were, in the past, great places for rustlers, thieves and smugglers. Now they are wonderful places to explore on a hike through the area. Enjoy the quiet and friendly atmosphere of this hamlet of Halton Hills. LEASING OFFICE NOW OPEN!
