Head to Kakadu National Park, where stunning waterfalls, crystal clear gorges, vast escarpments and more wildlife than you can imagine will blow your mind. The places you ll stumble across on your Kakadu adventure look just like the postcards. Explore Kakadu on a walking trail or four-wheel drive track. Head down to the Katherine region and glide along the water in a canoe or trek through the lush landscapes of Nitmiluk National Park. 10 FESTIVALS & EVENTS The NT s festivals and events draw crowds of thousands who come to immerse themselves in local culture. With more than 80 events during the year all over the Territory, there s always something going on. The middle of the year is an especially exciting time for festivals and events as the NT celebrates its endless summer while the rest of Australia shivers through winter. The weather sets the perfect stage for a packed calendar of sporting events, theatre, cabaret, dance, live music, art and cultural experiences. Wide Open Space Festival (Alice Springs, May) Come to a place infused with extraordinary characters where you ll meet people you feel like you ve known forever. With a mix of live bands, electronic, hip hop and superstar DJs; plus yoga, workshops and everything in between. The Northern Territory has some of the wildest festivals anywhere in the world bring your swag and come check them out. Wide Open Space Festival Summer Sessions (Darwin, June) A great mix of live bands and DJs set the scene for a fantastic one day beach festival in June. Seaside Sounds (Darwin, July) Soak up the sun on this beachside music festival, featuring national and international DJs pumping out cool beats. Seaside Sounds BASSINTHEGRASS (Darwin, May) Darwin s biggest music festival with 12 hours of some of the country s best live bands outdoors in the Gardens Amphitheatre. Darwin Festival (August) Soak up Darwin s balmy August nights with local and international performances from theatre and music to film, dance and comedy during this 2.5-week festival in the heart of Darwin. Blacken Music Festival (Alice Springs, March) More than 20 heavy metal bands from around the country descend upon Alice Springs for a weekend of music, camping and community-spirited metal culture. Alice Springs & Uluru Camel Cups (July & May) Camels veer off track, sit down in the middle of the race, and occasionally reach the finish line! Always lots of fun to watch. BASSINTHEGRASS Alice Springs Camel Cup Darwin Beer Can Regatta (July) Boats built entirely from aluminium beer cans are cheered on from Mindil Beach as they sink and splash in a struggle to reach the finish line. The Henley-On-Todd Regatta (Alice Springs, August) One of the quirkiest events in the NT, featuring bottomless boats racing down the dry riverbed of the Todd River in the heart of Alice Springs. Garma Festival (Arnhem Land, August) A celebration of the Indigenous Yolngu people of east Arnhem Land, with ceremonial performances, acclaimed artists of the region and cultural classes. 12 Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park Robin Falls Nature The Northern Territory is one of the least populated environments on the planet, with landscapes left almost untouched since the dawn of time. It s home to UNESCO World Heritagelisted national parks and world-famous natural icons that draw thousands of visitors a year. 13 Explore the landscape for yourself on a desert walk across part or all of the 224km Larapinta Trail. Rob, UK. In the Top End, head to Kakadu National Park and plunge into the crystal clear pool beneath Jim Jim Falls or swim in nature s own infinity pool at the top of Gunlom. Kakadu is a natural wonderland, home to hundreds of birds, animals and plant species. The experiences you have here will make you want to stay longer and see more. Nature comes alive at Nitmiluk National Park as you cruise or canoe on the mighty Katherine Gorge or swim at Edith Falls. To truly immerse yourself in this special place, take the fiveday hike on the Jatbula Trail to explore hidden rockholes and waterfalls or a three-day guided canoe safari on the Katherine River. Find your spot and relax in the thermal pools at Mataranka Hot Springs or Bitter Springs and let the warm, turquoise water work its magic. In an easy 90 minutes drive from Darwin you can explore the waterfalls of Litchfield National Park. It s a popular day trip but with so many swimming and camping spots to choose from, it s well worth spending a night or two. Camp or book a cabin. Alice Springs Desert Park In the Red Centre, nature s playground is just either side of Alice Springs in the West and East MacDonnell Ranges. Discover outback waterholes, amazing rock formations or even a tropical oasis in the desert at Palm Valley. With plenty of spots to camp and hike, you can lose yourself in the region for a few days or a few weeks. Don t miss the majestic Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park. Challenge yourself on the rim walk for unforgettable views across the sandstone walls of the canyon. The red rock face of the canyon soars above a dense forests of palms, ferns and cycads and is home to many native animals. As the spiritual heart of Australia, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is like the land of the giants the sheer size of its natural attractions will leave you speechless. Walk, cycle or Segway around the base of Uluru and discover caves, crevices and littleknown waterholes and lush woodlands that line this monolithic icon. Be sure to explore the other great natural wonder in this area, the 500-million-year-old rock formation known as Kata Tjuta. Kings Canyon, Watarrka National Park

14 Culture There are hundreds of Aboriginal languages, customs and laws woven together across the Northern Territory to tell a story that s more than 50,000 years old. Visit ancient rock art galleries in Kakadu or take a cultural tour to meet the locals and experience traditional skills first-hand. Just outside Darwin, visit Pudakul for a traditional welcome and introduction to local customs. Or take a short ferry ride or flight across the harbour to the Tiwi Islands to see original artworks, meet the artists and learn the story behind the art. Further down the track in Katherine is Top Didj, where you can sit with a traditional elder and hear his stories and learn how to hunt and paint. In Alice Springs, join an Aboriginal chef for an unforgettable campfire dinner under the stars on RT Tours Australia. Karrke at Kings Canyon is the chance to taste some local bush tucker and get to know more about traditional hunting and gathering skills. At Maruku at Uluru, learn about desert stories and art and even create your own masterpiece. In all these interactive experiences, you ll get to know the Northern Territory s strong Aboriginal culture direct from the traditional custodians of the land.

16 BARS & NIGHTLIFE The Dry Season is PARTY SEASON!. While the rest of Australia is in hibernation, The NT heats up with world class acts. Toasting the sunset is a Northern Territory rite, and the best ways involve a cold drink and a chat with the locals. Pull up a chair at a waterfront bar, around a desert campfire or on the verandah of a colourful outback pub. Darwin, the NT s tropical capital, is a fun, youthful and multicultural city. Most of Darwin s nightlife is centred around Mitchell Street, with bars, open-air pubs and cool cafes all within easy reach. Wander down to the Ski Club right on the water s edge for sunset and catch some chilled beats while the sun sinks into the ocean. There s a great live music scene in Darwin. Check out the Railway Club and Happy Yess for original music or head to Nirvana or Dinah Beach Yacht Club for their open mic nights and jam sessions. And for late night thrills every weekend, try Throb Nightclub where you re free to be and catch one of the dazzling drag shows before dancing the night away. Soak up the Daly Waters Historic Pub s friendly atmosphere as you relax with a cool drink at the bar. Crammed with decades of memorabilia, like women s bras hanging from the ceiling. The Red Centre is famous for its outback pubs, like the Outback Pioneer Lodge (Ayers Rock Resort) and the Thirsty Dingo (Kings Canyon Resort) where you ll cheers mates old and new.

17 Get a taste of Alice Springs vibrancy in the many quirky bars and cafes around town. At the Epilogue Lounge, head up to the rooftop bar for the open mic night or check out the DJs or bands playing reggae, hip hop, funk, soul and house music most nights. Montes is a great place to hang out with friends in a funky setting, or head to Bojangles or the Rock Bar for live music on Fridays and Saturdays. The nightlife scene is actually really big here. Some of the craziest nights I ve ever had have been in Alice - Jacki, USA Memorabilia adorns the walls, from Irish football jerseys to bras. Have a long look maybe you ll find my thong.

It s a place unlike any other. You can easily reach the famous Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk national parks in just a few hours drive from Darwin. In the Top End, you ll experience a beautiful tropical climate, landscapes dotted with rainforest, gorges, waterfalls and waterholes, water-based adventure, Aboriginal culture and a relaxed outdoor lifestyle. As the sun goes down, Mitchell Street bursts into action, and you can mingle with the locals at the huge variety of pubs, clubs and restaurants. 19 Don t MISS! DARWIN MARKETS Indulge your tastebuds with fresh, authentic flavours at Darwin s famous foodie markets. On the weekends, Parap, Nightcliff and Rapid Creek are transformed into open-air markets where locals go for their weekly shop. The world-famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets (Thursday and Sunday evenings during the dry season from May to October) is also a favourite, offering handmade arts and crafts, local music and a plate of something from every corner of the earth. Parap Markets, Darwin Croc Cove, Darwin Local knowledge... SUNSETS Take a harbour cruise or have dinner at a waterside restaurant to get a front row view of Darwin s spectacular sunsets. Dripstone Cliffs, Darwin CROCS Take the Cage of Death dive with the crocs at Crocosaurus Cove or hop on a jumping crocodile cruise on the nearby Adelaide River. Pssst...Ask Darwin locals when the next Sandbar Party is. The exposed sandbar in the middle of the Darwin Harbour is the perfect spot for a BBQ, a game of cricket, or dancing the day away to endless summer beats. Darwin Wave Lagoon

RED CENTRE Further south in the Red Centre, you ll see genuine outback country and experience Australia s most recognisable icon Uluru as well as authentic Aboriginal art and culture, outback adventure, unique wildlife and colourful characters. Uluru Motorcycles The famous outback town of Alice Springs is surrounded by dramatic desert landscapes. The town has stories of Australian history and heritage absolutely everywhere. Hints of Afghan cameleers, flying doctors and legendary outback pioneers are around every corner. Aboriginal art is thriving in Alice Springs and the artists are happy to share their knowledge of the styles and symbols used to give meaning to the landscape.

21 Don t MISS! Local knowledge... ALICE SPRINGS CUDDLE a KANGAROO Take the sunset tour to the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs and get up close and personal with the roos there. You can even cuddle a baby kangaroo. ON YOUR BIKE Hire a bike and follow one of the many trails around town. For an adrenalin rush, try one of the mountain bike trails or even join the annual mountain bike event over Easter each year. GET UNDER THE STARS This is the perfect place for stargazers. With wide open skies away from big city lights, you can lose yourself under a blanket of stars most nights of the year. HIPSTER HANGOUTS Whether you re into house or heavy metal, there s a venue you ll love. WATERHOLES The desert country around Alice Springs is also surprisingly good for swimming. Tour the West MacDonnell Ranges and stop for a swim in Glen Helen Gorge, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge or Redbank Gorge.

22 Working There is plenty of work for skilled and non-skilled workers across the Northern Territory, and our status as a regional destination makes it easy for working holiday makers to extend their visa up to 12 months.

23 Hospitality Experienced hospitality workers are in high demand from May to October. There are great opportunities for chefs, cooks, food and beverage attendants, kitchen hands and hotel administration and maintenance staff. Cattle Stations The Northern Territory is home to some of the biggest cattle stations in Australia. Usually no experience is necessary, but if you can ride a horse or have a background in agriculture, they ll love you even more. Nursing Agriculture Hospitals across the Territory are always looking for casual nurses with specific demand for midwives, ICU and A&E trained nurses plus those with aged care experience. There are hundreds of farms across the Northern Territory, and the type and amount of work available depends on the season. 24 If you re chasing an endless summer this is the place for you. Leave your winter clothes behind and bask in year round tropical heat, with amazing skies, balmy breezes and the permanently laid-back feeling of summer. WEATHER While the rest of Australia shivers between May and August, the Top End is splashed with colour and light, huge blue skies, sparkling oceans and glorious sunny days. The temperature hovers at around 32 degrees every day and there are endless options to get outside and soak it up. Later in the year from November to March you ll see spectacular light shows as the summer storms roll in and transform the landscape into an explosion of colour and life. The Red Centre s desert climate and dramatic landscapes set the scene for adventure, with hot dry days and cooler star studded nights. You ll be struck by the contrast of the red desert earth against big blue skies and the clean dry air is perfect for exploring. From May to September the days are warm with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees, with a drop in temperature as the sun goes down at night. It gets hotter from October to March, and early mornings and late afternoons are the perfect times to explore.
