2 Regional Development Australia Pilbara is pleased to present the West Pilbara Children and Families Community Directory edition. This Directory provides a brief description of and contact details for organisations, government agencies and Aboriginal Corporations who deliver services and support for children and families in the West Pilbara. Publishing this Directory has been made possible through funding from the West Pilbara Communities for Children (WPC4C) Initiative. The WPC4C Initiative is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services, through the Families and Children Activity, and has been allocated $5.1 million from The objective of the WPC4C Initiative is to improve the health and wellbeing of families and the development of young children from birth through to 12 years of age. Regional Development Australia Pilbara, as facilitating partner for the WPC4C Initiative, funds local community partners to deliver programmes that are aimed at creating child-friendly communities, healthy young families, supporting family and parents, early learning and school transition and engagement. The WPC4C Initiative has a strong focus on evidence-based programmes and supports early intervention and prevention service delivery for vulnerable and at-risk children. Kids Helpline Kids Helpline is Australia s only free, private and confidential telephone and online counselling service specifically for young people aged 5-25 years. Kinway Domestic Violence & General Counselling Relationship counselling for individuals, couples or whole families. Lifeline Crisis support and suicide prevention. Men s Domestic Violence Helpline Provides counselling for men who are concerned about becoming violent or abusive. 4

Ngala Parent Information and Helpline For parents with babies and young children seeking to discuss their parenting concerns. Parenting WA Line Free 24/7 information and support service for parents of children aged 0-18 years. Poisons Information Service Toxicological advice is provided on the management of exposures to prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals, household and industrial chemicals, plants, animal envenomations, pesticides and other agricultural products. Pregnancy, Birth & Baby Helpline Quitline Telephone support and coaching service for people who want to quit smoking. Samaritans Youth Line Non-judgemental, non-religious emotional support for the despairing and suicidal. Sexual Health Helpline Advanced practice nurses are available for a confidential and anonymous discussion on all aspects of sexual and reproductive health for both men and women. National and State Helplines Sids and Kids Providing safe sleeping education to the community hour help line providing grief support to those affected by the sudden and unexpected death of a child from conception onwards. Offers support, counselling and referral pathways. 5

Crisis response service for families, friends and associates who have been bereaved through suicide. Suicide Call Back Service Crisis counselling to people at risk of suicide, carers of someone who is suicidal and those bereaved by suicide, 24 hours per day 7 days a week. Women s Domestic Violence Helpline Support and counselling for women experiencing family and domestic violence. Department of Education Pilbara Education Regional Office, Karratha The Pilbara Education Regional Office (PERO) provides support to schools to deliver quality educational opportunities and outcomes for students in diverse school and community settings. Participation The Participation team assists young people in Years 11 and 12 (16/17 years of age) to engage in approved educational activities. 12 Government Department for Local Government and Communities Education and Care Regulatory Unit Assessment Officers from the Education and Care Regulatory Unit are available to offer assistance, support and complete the assessment and ratings process for the National Quality Standard to all approved children s services for long day care, family day care and out of school hours care. ecru@dlgc.wa.gov.au Youth Parenting WA Parenting WA offers an information, support and referral service to parents, carers, grandparents and families with children up to 18 years of age. Parenting WA services are free and no referral is needed. Seniors Information and referral telephone service providing referrals and information on issues such as accommodation options, education, finance, business, health and lifestyle. Best Start Programme, Roebourne Best Start is for families with Aboriginal children from babies to five years. It provides early childhood programmes that respect Aboriginal culture and ways of raising children. Best Start helps families build strong relationships and nurture their children s health, learning and development. The programme encourages links with schools and supports children s transition to school. 15 Government Western Australian Country Health Services Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service & Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service The Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service sees children, adolescents, and adults suffering from moderate to severe mental illnesses including affective disorders, psychotic disorders, and severe anxiety disorder. 26 Early Years Regional Development Australia Pilbara Early Years Groups The West Pilbara Early Years Groups aim to encourage networking and collaboration between children s service providers, government agencies and primary schools working within the West Pilbara. The aim is to identify service needs and perceived gaps, and provide collective strategies to meet these needs using existing resources and/or attracting funding to provide other resources. 28 Early Years The Youth Shed Indoor Play Centre The Youth Shed is a family friendly facility for children and parents. The indoor play centre is open Monday to Friday 9am 12pm and 2pm-5pm and on weekends between 9am and 5pm. There is also a café, dedicated youth space, performing arts area and skate park.
