Ian Burnet is an author who has spent over thirty years living, working, travelling and guiding in the Indonesian archipelago. He first went to work in Indonesia in 1968 and was fascinated by its rich history, its spices and the role played by the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and English in the history of the islands. Ian s first book Spice Islands tells of the history, romance and adventure of the spice trade from Eastern Indonesia over a period of 2000 years. His second book East Indies investigates the 200 year struggle between the Portuguese Crown, the United Dutch East India Company and the English East India Company for trade supremacy in the Eastern Seas. Ian s third book Archipelago A Journey Across Indonesia recounts his journey to discover the region s rich cultural diversity and forms the basis of his recommended WEA Sydney Summer Term 2016 lecture series and this new tour. Ian looks forward to sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for Indonesia with WEA Sydney travellers. Beyond Bali, much of Indonesia is unknown to many Australians. But in many respects, Indonesia is Australia's most important overall relationship. Yet the historical and cultural differences of our nearest neighbour are vast, possibly among the widest of any pair of adjoining countries. For the traveller, opportunity knocks: here is a frequently overlooked destination that begs exploration. Indonesia is the largest archipelago nation-state in the world. Its extremities are six thousand four hundred kilometres apart, as far as Perth, Western Australia is from Wellington, New Zealand. Almost seventeen thousand islands both separate and link the Indian and the Pacific Oceans and contain a rich human diversity of over three hundred and fifty different ethnic groups. The people are a subtle blend of cultures that have invaded since neolithic times Malay, Chinese, Indian, Melanesian, Portugese, Arabian, English and Dutch. Their history is a saga of wave after wave of human migration who either absorbed earlier arrivals, eliminated them or drove them into less favorable regions such as deep forests, high mountains, or remote islands (where they can still be found to this day). Highlights include Our starting point is the capital Jakarta, centre for government, politics and business the brain of Indonesia. West, Central and East Java follow including train trips to Bandung and Yogyakarta, the World Heritage Listed sites of Buddhist Borobudur and Hindu Prambanan and other interesting centres such as Solo and Malang before we depart Java at Surabaya. The program concludes in Bali with an optional extension to the rugged Nusa Tenggara island of Flores and the dragons of Komodo National Park, another World Heritage Listed site. WEA Sydney offer interesting and worthwhile travel experiences. It s a good time to visit some of the lesser known landscapes of one of the world s most interesting societies. Please consider joining us on A Journey Across Java and travel with a knowledgeable WEA Sydney lecturer you can trust, who shares your values, listens to you and adds value to your journey.

Itinerary Day #1 Wed 17 Aug 2016 Sydney - Jakarta Garuda Indonesia flight GA713 departs Sydney at 11:30 and arrives in Jakarta at 14:55. One of the world s greatest megalopolises, Jakarta isn t exactly a primary destination for the traveller. But it s the melting pot of representatives from the hundreds of different ethnic groups whose home is an archipelago of almost islands with a population of over 245 million. Here is the dynamic capital city of Indonesia: the economic, cultural and political centre. It s a city of stark contrasts containing the traditional and the modern, the rich and the desperately poor, the sacred and the worldly. A short visit is worthwhile, not only for some interesting sights lying behind the lines of traffic but also to simply experience firsthand an important part of the exploding market of Asia, soon to be 50 per cent of the world s economy and with more middle class consumers than the US and Europe combined. On arrival at Soekarno-Hatta Airport we will be met and transferred to our hotel, the Alila Jakarta. After resting from the flight we reconvene for a welcome dinner and tour briefing this evening. (D) Day #2 Thu 18 Aug 2016 Jakarta Scheduled today is a visit to the Queen of the East - the old town of Batavia, now known as Kota, the hub of Dutch colonial Indonesia. Decades of neglect resulted in a precinct of crumbling historic buildings and smelly canals. But, like many other world cities, urban renewal is under way. Central sections of Kota have been pedestrianised and restoration of some structures is steadily progressing. Nearby is Sunda Kelapa Harbour, the old harbour in the northern part of Kota. Here we can admire the majestic, wooden Phinisi schooners manually offloading rice and onloading timber and cement with carriers shouldering great loads with incredible balance and dexterity up and down the narrow, steep gangplanks. Near the entrance to Sunda Kelapa we enter the Museum Bahari which concentrates on Jakarta s maritime history and is situated in old atmospheric warehouses built around 1652 by the United Dutch East India Company (known as VOC ie Veerenigde Oost - Indische Compagnie). Lunch at nearby Café Batavia on Fatahillah Square precedes our visit to the Museum Sejarah Jakarta (Jakarta History Museum), housed in Batavia s former Stadhuis (Town Hall), a venerable c1710 structure, once the epicentre of the Dutch colonial empire. (B L) Day #3 Fri 19 Aug 2016 Jakarta - Bandung Replicating Ian s initial journey in Archipelago A Journey Across Indonesia, one of the world s great railway journeys awaits us today. We depart Jakarta s Gambir station in Executif Class on the Argo Parahyangan 32 train and roll through the sculpted rice terraces, rich cultivated lands and mountains of west Java. Humidity recedes, gradually replaced by cool, fresh air as we steadily climb up to the broad plateau containing Bandung which we reach mid afternoon. We disembark into Bandung s art deco station building where we are met and transferred to our accommodation, the Savoy Homann Hotel, another historic art deco building. Your main luggage will be separately transferred and waiting for you in your room. (B PL D) Day #4 Sat 20 Aug 2016 Bandung In the 17th-18th century, the Dutch East Indies Company created small plantations in Bandung, with a road to Batavia (today's Jakarta) completed in Around the middle of the l9th Century, South American cinchona (the main ingredient in the anti-malarial drug quinine), Assam tea, and coffee were introduced to the highlands. By the end of the century the Bandung region was registered as the most prosperous plantation area of West Java. In 1880 the rail line connecting Jakarta and Bandung was completed, offering a three hour trip up from the humid capital. With this railway revolution, life changed forever in Bandung. Small industries flourished: raw plantation crops, formerly sent directly to Jakarta for processing before shipment to Europe, could now be processed efficiently in Bandung. The Chinese, who had never lived in Bandung in any number, were attracted to help run and service the new industries. Bandung s Chinatown dates from this period. Hotels, cafes, shops sprouted up to serve the planters who either came down from their highland plantations or up from the capital to frolic in Bandung. The Preanger Hotel and the Savoy Homann were the hotels of choice. Jalan Braga became the promenade, lined with exclusive European shops. The first of Bandung s universities, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), was established in One of its alumni is former President Soekarno. With prosperity, previous attempts to relocate the colonial capital to Bandung now gathered momentum. As the city became the home of the wealthy Dutch elite, Bandung came to be known as Parijs van Java the Paris of Java. This was the high point of tropical art deco and Bandung still contains outstanding examples of this achitectural expression. Today we visit some of these important sites as well as museums and the famous Angklung school of Pak Ujo for a traditional gamelan performance. ( B L ) Day #5 Sun 21 Aug 2016 Bandung - Yogyakarta An early wakeup call starts the day, one which replicates the second of Ian s train journeys in Archipelago A Journey Across Indonesia. We depart Bandung station in Executif Class on the Argo Wilis 6 train and follow the volcanic spine of Java. We roll through more luminously green rice terraces,

mountains and valleys on our eight hour journey to Yogyakarta. On arrival at Tugu Yogyakarta station we transfer to Gallery Prawirotaman, our base for the next four nights. As before, your main luggage will be separately transferred and waiting for you in your room. Yogyakarta is nestled in the heart of Java and is steeped in rich Javanese culture and tradition. Situated on a fertile plain at the foot of the still active Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta is the cultural and spritual capital of Java. Its power and influence reached a peak in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when the empire of Mataram was dominant. Today the town's leading citizen is the Sultan of Yogyakarta and his royal palace, the Kraton, occupies one square kilometre right in the heart of the city. Dutch colonialists also left their mark architecturally on the city. The Bank Indonesia building at the end of Jalan Malioboro is one of the prime examples of the European influence on building styles and there are many public offices especially built in a Javanese-Dutch style. To the Javanese, Yogya has always been a symbol of nationalist passion and resistance to alien rule and has been the setting for legendary backlash against the Dutch. Prince Diponegoro waged a holy war against the colonialists from and the city also acted as an administrative centre for the Indonesian independence battle after World War II after the Dutch had reoccupied Jakarta. The sultan locked himself in his palace during this time and allowed rebels to use it as a base. Yogya declared itself part of the Republic of Indonesia once independence was won and was given special region status. Yogya's inter-religious and royal history still shapes the city and its surrounds to this very day. Javanese culture, manners and beliefs still prevail strongly, but among it all, a modern vibrant society has cropped up, especially in the city's north which is teeming with university students, home to some of Indonesia's largest university campuses. (B PL D) Day #6 Mon 22 Aug 2016 Yogyakarta Orientation tour today to explore the Sultan s Palace, the Kraton of Yogyakarta, a walled city within a city and probably the finest example of Javanese palace architecture. This unique compound is home to around people, and has its own market, shops, batik and silver cottage industries, schools and mosques. Around 1000 of its residents are still employed by the Sultan. We walk through the markets, batik and puppetry workshops around Malioboro Street, the main street of the Javanese capital. It s busy from morning until very late at night and a favourite meeting place of students, travellers and street merchants. (B L D) mountain, one of the world s most imposing structures and charged with supernatural energy. Erected before Notre Dame and Chartres cathedrals, Borobudur also predates the Buddhist temple of Angkor Wat by three centuries. Princes of the Sailendra dynasty erected it with peasant labour between 778 and 850 AD. Nobody knows how this great structure was built at a time when modern engineering techniques were yet to be developed. Thousands of labourers, slaves, carvers, sculptors, carriers and expert supervisors worked for decades rolling logs, working ropes, levers, hammers, mallets and chisels. It is estimated that it took perhaps men a century to build. Borobudur was abandoned soon after its completion and was buried under 1000 years of volcanic eruptions and tropical growth until discovered by a British colonel during the British occupation of Indonesia during In 1855 Borubudur was cleared and the long process of restoration began; the work was at last completed in 1983 at a cost of over USD25 million. The structure of Borobudur is that of a mandala. The base is square, with the base of each side being a bit over 100 metres long and it then rises steadily through nine levels the first six of which are square and the last three being circular. These last three levels are adorned with 72 smaller chedis, each one of which holds a small seated buddha statue. Some of these chedis are pierced by a number of small "windows" (really more like missing blocks) through which you can see the statues. Others do not have a top, so the statues are clearly visible. This is a particularly photogenic part of the site especially in the early morning and late afternoon. (B L D) Day #8 Wed 24 Aug 2016 Yogyakarta Day at leisure for personal exploration. Besides checking out other temples, one of the best things to do in Yogyakarta is to simply soak up the atmosphere. The kampungs, or local neighbourhoods, are intriguing to wander around. Close to the Kraton, puppet workshops and batik galleries are tucked along narrow laneways, while further south in Kota Gede, silversmiths practice their craft by the streetside or in workshops behind houses. Yogya also has a higher-thanaverage population of genuinely talented street musicians, so you never know when you might run into an impromptu concert. There's also plenty of good shopping options for those in the market for souvenirs. (B) Day #9 Thu 25 Aug 2016 Yogyakarta Prambanan - Solo Day #7 Tue 23 Aug 2016 Yogyakarta In the morning we visit one of the largest Buddhist sanctuaries in the world, the Borobudur. Pilgrims would approach Borobudur from the east and it is thought that before visiting the temple that they first paid homage to the three huge stone statues enshrined at nearby Candi Mendut. We follow in their footsteps before proceeding to the ancient terraces of Borobudur. Here is one of South East Asia s greatest Buddhist relics, a colossal cosmic We continue our Java traverse. Today we travel to nearby Solo, the capital of the Mataram kingdom, the powerhouse of Central Java until 1745 and Yogyakarta s eternal rival. But shortly after our Yogya departure we reach the Prambanan Plain. Lying among villages and green ricefields with the sharp peak of the Mount Merapi volcano smoking in the background

are the best and most extensive Hindu temple ruins in all of Indonesia. Prambanan Temple is the best known and we will visit this interesting World Heritage Listed site. The huge Prambanan complex contains the remains of 244 temples but three main temples dominate, representing the three highest gods of Hinduism Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Keeper and Shiva the Destroyer. After lunch we continue to the Lor Inn Hotel, our Solo base where we arrive in the early afternoon. (B L D) Day #10 Fri 26 Aug 2016 Solo Often overshadowed by its more conspicuous neighbour Yogyakarta, Solo has the same deep connection to the culture and history of Central Java, but also offers its own charms. Known for being the least westernised city in Central Java, Solo is still home to two palaces and the descendants of the royal families. Quieter and more traditional than its rival, the city centre is relatively small and most of the main attractions are within walking distance from one another. Our guided orientation tour takes in the Istana Mangkunegaran palace and Danar Hadi, one of Indonesia s best batik museums with an outstanding collection of antique and royal textiles from Java and beyond, housed in a stunning whitewashed colonial building. Optional evening possibilites include wayang orang performances and other cultural shows at Swiredari Amusement Park. Another good option in Solo is to wander the streets and soak up the atmosphere. Peep into batik and puppet workshops, learn about local culture, maybe enjoy a meal on a street corner, arrange to see a traditional dance or music performance and peruse the many traditional markets, especially the enchanting antiques bazaar Pasar Triwindu. Our guide will make suggestions and assist. ( B L ) Day #13 Mon 29 Aug 2016 Malang Mt Bromo is the jewel in the crown of East Java tourist attractions and ranks as one of Southeast Asia's premier natural wonders. Located high in the hills due east of Malang, the area around the active volcano was one of the last refuges of the former Majapahit empire, which ruled most of Java and Bali in the 13th and 14th centuries. Early this morning we board jeeps and visit this lunarlike landscape. Rising fom the caldera are three volcanoes active, smouldering Mt Bromo, Mt Kursi amd Mt Batok. To the south, Mt Semeru, Java s highest peak and one of its most active volcanoes, casts its shadow over the eerie landscape. We return to our hotel, stopping en route if time permits at Pelangi waterfall and Jago temple. Farewell dinner scheduled this evening. ( B L D ) Day #11 Sat 27 Aug 2016 Solo Blitar Longish drive from Solo to Blitar, a low-key provincial city. Our hotel Tugu Blitar has a real sense of history, originally a Dutch colonial building from the 1850s. (B L D ) Day #14 Tue 30 Aug 2016 Malang Surabaya - Bali We drive to Surabaya before boarding our flight to Denpasar, Bali. Our Garuda Indonesia flight GA421 departs Denpasar at 20:00 and arrives in Jakarta at 21:00. Here we connect with Garuda Indonesia flight GA712 which departs Jakarta at 22:35 and arrives in Sydney at 09:30 on Wednesday 31 Aug Day #12 Sun 28 Aug 2016 Blitar - Malang We depart Blitar and drive north to the Panataran temple complex, built between the 12th and 15th century and the largest intact temples of the Majapahit empire. The main structure is a stepped pyramid, with each level adorned with intricate carvings, some depicting stories from the Hindu Ramayana epic poem. We proceed to Malang, with its leafy, colonial-era boulevards, well laid out squares and parks and old Dutch architecture. As with many Indonesian towns, the focal point in Malang is the alun-alun (town square), which comes alive each night with people strolling and vendors selling all manner of goods. We check into the Hotel Tugu Malang, our centrally-located accommodation. ( B L ) Clients continuing on the Flores and Komodo Extension are transferred to the nearby Vira Bali Hotel. FLORES and KOMODO EXTENSION Day #14 Tue 30 Aug 2016 Bali Free time for rest or personal exploration. Welcome dinner and tour briefing this evening. ( B D ) Day #15 Wed 31 Aug 2016 Bali - Ende - Moni Transfer to the airport for our flight to Ende, the capital of Flores. On arrival we drive northeast through a spectacular setting of misty mountain cones, rivers and jade rice terraces until we arrive in Moni. Looming above is the fabled Mount

Kelimutu, the spiritual home of the Leo people. We check into our hotel, the Kelimutu Ecolodge. (B L D ) Day #16 Thu 01 Sep 2016 Moni - Ende Early start for our sunrise excursion to Kelimutu National Park, an unmissable Nusa Tenggara experience. The three deep volcanic lakes on the top of Mount Kelimutu are colored differently, dyed by minerals leaching into the waters. Although one of the lakes is always turquoise, the others fluctuate to varying shades of yellow, orange, red and brown. Kelimutu is sacred to local people and legend has it that the souls of the dead find their way to one of the lakes: young people s souls go to the turquoise lake; elderly people s go to the brown lake; and sinners souls go to the red lake. We return to our hotel for breakfast before a visit to Kowanara village, famous for its traditional Lionese houses, stone seats and traditional sacred cemetery. We drive on to Ende where we check in to the Grand Wisata Hotel. ( B L D ) see local palm wine production. On arrival in Ruteng we check in to the Sindha Hotel. ( B L D ) Day #20 Mon 05 Sep 2016 Ruteng Labuan Bajo Our schedule today is to continue to Labuanbajo on Flores western tip, completing the final stage of our overland journey. En route we will visit Ruteng Puu, a Manggarainese traditional village plus Lembor and Cancar, noted for their round, spiderweb-shaped ricefields. Bajo Komodo Eco Lodge is our base in the romantically ramshackle little harbour town of Labuanbajo, undergoing strong growth due to its role of gateway to Komodo National Park. ( B L D ) Day #21 Tue 06 Sep 2016 Labuanbajo Today is a high point of our Flores tour with our boat trip to the islands of the Komodo Archipelago. We will visit Rinca Island, where we will trek with guides in search the dragons, or ora as they are known locally. These monsters can reach 12 feet long and weigh up to 330 pounds. Lunch will be served on our boat and coral reef snorkelling will be available on our return cruise to Labuanbajo. ( B L ) Day #22 Wed 07 Sep 2016 Labuanbajo - Bali Day #17 Fri 02 Sep 2016 Ende - Bajawa. In the morning we visit the house of exile of Sukarno, Indonesia s first President. Most of the original period furnishings remain. We continue our western traverse as far as Bajawa, a laid-back hill town and trading post for the Ngada people. These are one of the most traditional on Flores with five tribal groups, each with its own customs, languages, beliefs and distinctive dress made of hand-spun ikat cloth, intricately patterned and coloured with dye extracted from plants and minerals. On the way if time permits we may stop stop in Boawae a Nagekeo tribe village on the slope of Mt. Ebulobo volcano and Wogo traditional village. On arrival in Bajawa direct check into our hotel, the Hotel Edelweis. ( B L D ) Day #18 Sat 03 Sep 2016 Bajawa Bajawa s big attraction is the opportunity to explore traditional villages in the glorious countryside along the flanks of the imposing Mt Inerie volcano. Bena is one of the best examples and today we will visit this village, the home of nine clans. Bena s stone monuments are the region s best. The high roofed thatched houses are lined up in two rows on a ridge, interspersed with megalithic tomblike structures. All villagers are officially Roman Catholic and attend a local missionary school. but traditional beliefs and customs endure. Sacrifices are held at different times during the year and a caste system remains in force ( B L D ) Transfer to the airport for our flight to Denpasar. On arrival, we are transferred to the nearby Vira Bali Hotel. Farewell dinner scheduled this evening. ( B D ) Day #23 Thu 08 Sep 2016 Bali - Sydney Free time before our transfer to the airport for our flight to Sydney via Jakarta. Our Garuda Indonesia flight GA421 departs Denpasar at 20:00 and arrives in Jakarta at 21:00. Here we connect with Garuda Indonesia flight GA712 which departs Jakarta at 22:35 and arrives in Sydney at 09:30 on Friday. Day #24 Fri 09 Sep 2016 Arrive Sydney Day #19 Sun 04 Sep 2016 Bajawa - Ruteng We continue our Flores overland trip to Ruteng. This is a small, Catholic city with a lively store and an important market district. Because of its 1200 metre altitude, Ruteng has a cool and pleasant climate. The city is also the centre of the Manggarai-minority. On the way we will visit Ranamese Lake with its photogenic views of Mt Inerie and call in to Aimere to
