4 To Discover Puhoi (meaning slow river) Is more than a small village 30 minutes north of Auckland city, it s one of New Zealand s ethnic historic villages. A village that tells a story of early Bohemian settlers coming to New Zealand 150 years ago to start up a new life. Today, this story is alive through heritage sites like the beautiful church, the library, the famous local pub and the wharf. Warkworth A colonial township situated on the meandering Mahurangi River. Highlights include the river boardwalk, the village stores, the heritage trail, the beautifully preserved early 1900's architecture, picturesque walkways and parks, historical cement works, giant kauri trees, the Jane Gifford scow and the Warkworth and District Museum. Kawau Island One of the larger islands making up the Hauraki Gulf, Kawau Island is an 8km trip by ferry from Sandspit. Steeped in history, rich in natural beauty, Kawau Island will captivate you. Visit the former gentlemen s estate of Sir George Grey, Mansion House, transformed in 1876 complete with its exotic gardens. Enjoy walks, historic sites, and wildlife.
