3 1 General Information 1.1 Overview of the side events The 22 nd session of the Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP22), hosted by the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco, will convene in the city of Marrakech from 7 th - 18 th November As part of the activities of the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the 10- Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, the Ministry of Tourism of Morocco is hosting a three- day Tourism Side Eventsimultaneously withthe UNFCCC COP22,with the theme Advancing Sustainable Tourism in a Changing Climate. This event is organized in partnership with the Government of France, the Government of Korea, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO),in Marrakech, Morocco on the 10 th, 11 th and 12 th of November The Tourism Side Eventcomprises the following meetings: Thursday November 10 th 2016 (see Agenda in Annex 1): Sustainable Tourism Expert Meeting on Key environmental indicators for the private sector. This meeting is part of the Portfolio of Work of the 10YFP 1 Sustainable Tourism Programme (9:00h 17:30h); Special Presentation Showcasing Tourism & Climate Solutions: Featuring Moroccan Sustainable Tourism Awardees, followed by cocktails in the COP22 Green Zone at 19:00h 20:30h (by invitation). Friday November 11 th 2016 (see Agenda in Annex 2): International Sustainable Tourism Symposiumof the 10YFP Sustainable Tourism Programme(8:30h 17:30h); Networking event with financial institutions on sustainable tourism at 19:00h (by invitation). Airport shuttles will be available for Tourism Side Event participants arriving and departing from the airport and for travel between the Palmeraie Golf Palace Hotel and the main pavilion of the UNFCCC COP22. For participants with a keen interest in the climate- related initiatives being implemented in Morocco, see: 2 About the COP22 Tourism Side Event 2.1 Main Theme and Objectives The main theme for the TourismSide Event is: "Advancing Sustainable Tourism in a Changing Climate". The daily meetings will promote increased awareness on tourism and climate change issues and encouragethe global tourism sector to increase its actions and contributions in support of nationalcommitments of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The threedaily meetings are described further below. 2.2 Green Meeting Credentials This is a green meeting, which means that the organizers and hosts have evaluated meeting venues and catering and have encouraged use of recyclable and reusable packaging where necessary. In addition, the meeting venue and hotels have been selected to minimize the travel distance and the need for use of public transportation. Participants are also encouraged to observe all hotel requests or promotions to conserve water, energy and other resources, and to limit food and other kinds of waste disposal. 2 Note that the Special Presentation Showcasing Tourism & Climate Solutions will be the only activity taking place inside COP22 Village at the Green Zone. 4

5 The Ministry of Tourism of Morocco, the Michelin Company of France and UNEP collaborated on a map of Marrakech that highlights sustainability in action including locations of restaurants serving local and organic food; artisans certified to national quality standards and their arts & crafts;hotels, Blue Flag beaches in the vicinity of Marrakech and other popular yet sustainable hang- outs. The map will be available soon. 2.3 Event Registration (e.g. online, onsite - badges and participant materials) Participants attending these meetings must first register here. The Sustainable Tourism Expert Meeting is by invitation only. The International Symposium is open to the public and the Annual Conferenceis open to all 10YFPactors, which include programme partners, multi- stakeholder advisory committee (MAC) members and programme lead/co- leads, as well as other interested and invited stakeholders. Evening events are by invitation, and the field excursion is open to all participants. Completed registration forms will help to provide meeting badges that accurately identify the participant. Please note that registration for the Tourism Side Event and meetings will not allow participants any access to the UNFCCC COP22 official meeting venues. The working language of the rest of meetings will be English. 3 TourismSide Event Meetings 3.1 Sustainable Tourism Expert Meeting on Key Environmental Indicators for the Private Sector(10 November 2016) This expertmeetingbrings together researchers, tourism/sustainable tourism practitioners and international experts working on life cycle assessments (LCA), the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the climate agenda, along with other global tourism participants e.g. theprivate sector, academia, international organizations, destination managers, consulting companies and associations.the meeting will discuss on theapplication of life cycle methods in tourism from policy to project implementation. The meeting is part of the Portfolio of Work of the 10YFP Sustainable Tourism Programme. The tourism private sector has the potential to contribute to several goals and targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda (SDA). Sustainable tourism is specifically mentioned in SDG Goals #8, #12 and #14 on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, sustainable consumption and production and the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources, respectively, and could contribute as well to other SDG goals e.g. efficient water use or the increased use of renewable energies. However, there is a need for best practice guidance on the use and application of measurable, monitoring indicators related to SDG indicators. These will help to bring better organization, visibility and accountability to reducing resource consumption by the tourism private sector (particularly energy, water, land and materials) at national levels, projected to double by The meeting theme is Key Environmental Indicators for the Tourism Private Sector and it will: 5

6 Discusskey indicators based on life cycle approaches and hotspots analyses; Discussthe relevance of selected indicators to the climate agenda and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets; Discussthe scope and content of guidance and advice for integrating, aggregating, visualizing and/or communicating (i.e. data availability, practicality and explanation) selected indicators across the sector. The Expert Meeting agenda is provided in Annex 1. This meeting will take place at Palmeraie Golf Palace Hotel and is by invitation. A few spaces are available to the public and therefore interested organizations may express interest in attending this meeting on the event registration form. 3.2 Special Presentation Showcasing Tourism & Climate Solutions COP22 Green Zone at 19:00h 20:30h (by invitation) followed bycocktails The Moroccan Ministry of Tourism has prioritizedthe sustainability of its tourism sector. The Ministry has introduced various policy tools to encourage tourism stakeholders to engage in sustainable tourism initiatives including the Moroccan Charter for Sustainable Tourism as well as the Morocco Sustainable Tourism Awards, currentlyinits 7 th year. These tools have led to the emergence of a network of committed actors in the national tourism sector. This Special Presentation aims to shed light on the best initiatives and projects of Moroccan tourism actors who are reducing carbon emissions in their tourism activities. This Presentation will highlight best practices and showcase past winners of the Morocco Sustainable Tourism awards (from 2008 to 2015), as well as the 2016 award nominees. The event will also be an opportunity to showcase some leading tourism actors that involved in activities under the Moroccan Component of a project financed by the International Climate Initiative of the Government of Germany, piloting environmental labelling standards, and involving Marrakech hotels and restaurants, among other actors. The agenda for this Special Presentation, which will take place at the COP22 Village Green Zone, is included in Annex 1. Participation is by invitation only. 3.3 International Sustainable Tourism Symposium (11 November 2016) The 10YFP STP International Symposium brings together global sustainable tourism experts who are dedicated to advancing sustainable tourism and to acceleratingthe shift to sustainable consumption and production (SCP) in both developed and developing countries. The Symposium is a public event and provides an opportunity to learn ofthe tourism sector s green house gas (GHG) emissions reduction activities, and to discussadvances in sustainability, including consumer trends, technological innovation and resource management and efficiency, among other themes. The Symposium is intended to highlight work underway in the transportation segment of the global tourism value chain to reduce carbon emissions and to address the 2030 SDGs. It will also discuss measurement and reporting requirements and the efforts needed to accelerate action in this sector. The private sector is under increasing pressure to demonstrate its contributions to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement, both of which were agreed to by 190+ governments in To date, research shows that mainly large multinational and publicly listed companies (some of which are large hotel chains)with billions of dollars in annual revenues,are participating in business coalitions that are acting on the2030 Sustainable Development goals and targets and on the Paris 6

7 Agreement that seeks to limit atmospheric warming to less than 2 o C or preferably 1.5 o C. To this end, every business, small or large, must be better informed and organized to pursue a low carbon objective, to minimize GHG emissions, to maximize efficient use of resources (land, water, energy and materials) and to report publicly on their progress. Bringingstakeholders from the tourism, travel and transportation sectors together to exchange, discuss and agree on the priority actions is a necessity to ensure consensus on the way forward and on the steps formonitoring progress. TheInternational Symposium agenda is provided in Annex 2. It will take place at the Palmeraie Golf Palace Hotel and is open to the public. Participants can register their attendance using the event registration form. 3.4 Annual Conference of the 10YFP Sustainable Tourism Programme (12 November 2016) The Annual Conference of the 10YFP STP 3 is a meeting of programme actors that will discuss its annual progress, priorities and programme needs. The Annual Conference presents opportunities for the 10YFP Secretariat, the STP programmelead, Co- Leads, MAC Members and Partners to exchange experiences and interact. All participants will therefore have the opportunity to help shape the direction and work priorities of the 10YFP STP. The agenda of the Annual Conference is provided in Annex 3. This meeting will take place at Palmeraie Golf Palace Hotel and will involve all 10YFP actors with a few spaces available for observers. Participants can register their attendance on the event registration form.
