1 THE RIVER LEIE COMMISSIONER: WATERWEGEN EN ZEEKANAAL NV CONTRACTOR: TV LEIE DOORTOCHT KORTRIJK COST PRICE: +/ REALISATION: The current widening works to the Leie are part of the Seine-Scheldt connection, which must connect the North Sea ports with the basin of Paris and Le Havre. Currently the passage of Kortrijk is navigable for ships of 300 tons (class I) and - if alternating in one direction - also for ships of 800 tons (class II) and 70m long. Following the work, ships of 1,350 tons (class IV) and with alternating sailing even up to 4,400 tons, :such as push barges of 185 m long and container ships with three layers of containers (class Vb), will be able to sail through Kortrijk. 2 In order to achieve this, three bottlenecks must be resolved: the Leie should be widened from 20 to 32 metres the bends in the river are too sharp. The river should become much more straight with bend radii of at least 550m the clearance height under the bridges should increase from the current 4,20m to 7m in the future. When handling a maximum slope of 5% for cyclists and pedestrians, such an increase means a small 60 metre longer ramp on both sides of the bridge. Fitting such bridges in the existing urban framework is then also no sinecure. On the historical axis of Buda street- Overleie street, this is altogether impossible and a mobile bridge is chosen. The bridge links the Buda island to the inner-city. Following the location on the Old Leie arm, the clearance height under the bridge don t have to be 7 m. Only pleasure boats have to pass. So, long access slopes aren t necessary. A cycle path passes under the bridge. The direct connections of the quays to the bridge are redirected to two roundabouts at the foot of the bridge. The abutments of the bridge are pulled back as far as possible and cut away. The entire area is excavated in a shell shape to the water. This creates a wide passage under the bridge: one park on both sides of the water, with the river that flows through the middle of the park. 6

In addition the Groeninge bridge is so distinguished that the risk exists that the park will be experienced as residual green. Conceptually, the park was chosen to give shape to the water as a shell. The river does not form a border, but is located in the middle of the park. By pulling back the bridge heads and also leading the traffic flows to the edge of the park, a substantial green area is created. Visually the park runs under the bridge. The construction of the park is, similar to the Diksmuide Quay, deliberately kept plain. The enhanced openness strengthens the feeling of scale that is introduced by the new Leie. 9
10 evolution of the shape of the King Albert Park Through the stacked walls in schist slate level differences are created. This creates terraces in the park that are useful to absorb permanent ground level heights (for example Tree drip-lines). The footpaths are led along these stacked walls and wind through the park. The winding motion makes it possible to minimise the slope, which makes the paths easy to use for pedestrians and disabled persons. Besides the large solitary trees (Caucasian Wing nut), no additional planting was introduced. The absence of shrubs provides vistas, which once again emphasises the openness and scale of the space. Skatebowl DESIGNERS: TEAM YOUTH CITY OF KORTRIJK TEAM PAIN, USA CONTRACTOR: TEAM PAIN TV LEIE DOORTOCHT KORTRIJK REALISATION: the skatebowl With the reconstruction of the public domain, the City of Kortrijk opted to insert a skate-bowl in Albert Park. The skate-bowl is a pole of attraction in this otherwise dead corner of the park. The design of this skate-bowl was developed by the city of Kortrijk together with Team Pain. The bowl was constructed as one monolith of concrete. The bowl creates a wider track variety than with a conventional ramp. In order to integrate the skate-bowl in the landscape, one uses the same syntax as the rest of the park. A horizontal construction, reinforced by the use of spacious lawns and the absence of irritating 12
13 vertical elements such as lighting armatures. The level differences in the park are absorbed by using stacked walls in red schist slate. Together with the paths in dolomite, this creates a harmonious completeness. In addition to the infrastructural story of the skate-bowl, the City also developed 2 other tracks to implement a sound policy around skateboarding. Local residents, users and municipal services get together at regular intervals in order to discuss the functioning of the bowl and make adjustments, if necessary. Finally, the City accommodates the Expertise Centre skate, blade and bike. 13

The Diksmuide quay and the Yzer quay don t have enough space to let the access slopes land in continuation of the bridge itself. By folding the bridge in its characteristic S-shape the bridge fits in the available space. 14

The V-shaped cross sections constantly changes in a flowing curve. For designing this structure Laurent Ney has used the methodology of form finding. The art of form finding means to find the optimal deflected and finally visual shape, due to a given stress distribution acting on the deformed structure. So, he starts from the stress distribution to find the optimal geometry. In the conventional manner of designing, you start from the geometry and optimize it so that the stress distribution and following deformation of the structure is acceptable. 15

This metropolitan scale is so prominent, that the reconstruction of quays should not cover it with small elements. Therefore, in the design of the quays, a resolute choice is made to use the large scale of the new Leie. The concept of the lay emphasize the scale by the width, a high degree of horizontality and simplicity of construction. former and new cross section 17
18 In the cross section pedestrians and cyclists are generously served. The eight meters wide promenade offers maximum comfort. Cars are banned from this promenade by a 20 cm high curb. The promenade is executed in hue concrete. Pedestrians and cyclist are separated by a linear arrangement of street furniture. Tal trees and lighting poles break the horizontality and accompany the cyclists and walkers. 18

The bridge is designed by the renowned bureau Greisch, experts in cable-stayed bridges and one of the collaborators of the Millau bridge in France.. The concrete deck is suspended on seven cables. The only pylon is 24 m high. 22
