Flip to the centre (page 24) and you ll find a touring map of the entire southern region. Just a 10 minute drive from Hobart, the Southern Trove is within easy reach for a day of exploration. Those who take their time though, are rewarded with unexpected finds. Days can be lost in these parts. World Heritage wilderness and sheltered waterways invite exploration on foot and by boat. Major settlements hug the coastline where livelihoods are carved out through industries including fishing, aquaculture and tourism. Back in 1792 when Bruni D Entrecasteaux sought solace from the Roaring Forties, he took shelter in The Channel s protected coves and bays. Today, find the same quiet and stillness. This expanse of water between Bruny Island and Tasmania s mainland offers smooth cruising waters and the coastal drive down is one of Australia s well-kept touring secrets. Dotted with seaside towns like Kettering, cast a line or find a hidden cove to picnic. Follow D Entrecasteaux s lead. Bruny Island has often been referred to as a microcosm of Tasmania. This island off an island off an island is packed with wilderness experiences and opportunities to enjoy the water, from sailing to surfing. There are extensive bush and coastal walking tracks, stretching far into South Bruny National Park and along windswept beaches. Rare wildlife including albino wallabies and the world s largest population of the endangered Forty-Spotted Pardalote call Bruny home. In the Huon Valley, the Huon River has its beginnings in Southwest National Park s rugged wilderness. From here, it joins with the Picton River near Tahune Forest before flowing through Huonville and Franklin, out to the D Entrecasteaux Channel. With its flow comes superb fly fishing, on-water activities and tales untold at the historic boating township of Franklin. Been to the Far South? It s where the mountains and forest meet the Great Southern Ocean. Flanked to the west by the rugged world of Southwest National Park, the Far South also has many sheltered, quiet bays and beaches along its eastern side, around which most settlement occurs. Walk a deserted beach, fish for your dinner, conquer a summit or sit with the stillness. 4 History and Heritage The Southern Trove region has been shaped by a rich history of whaling, timber cutting, boat building and fruit growing. Head for Cockle Creek to learn of the Far South s rich human history. It sits on the edge of Southwest National Park and is literally the end of the road. You can drive no further south in Australia. It was once a settlement with over 2000 residents. Explore the area s Aboriginal sites, abandoned tramways, whaling stories, gravestones and ruins. The first Europeans to set eyes on the Huon River were the crew commanded by Admiral Bruni D Entrecasteaux. The river was named by him in honour of his second in command, Captain Huon de Kermadec. The name is preserved today with a town, river, and the district all bearing the Huon title. The Huon Valley is well known as one of Tasmania s primary apple growing areas. Sample organic ciders made from the valley s bounty and pick up crisp, freshly picked apples from roadside stalls. These days, it s not just about apples though. Cherries, small-scale distilleries and aquaculture are emerging economic drivers for the region. The valley also has a proud boat building heritage that continues on Franklin s waterfront. At the Wooden Boat Centre, not only can you delve into the maritime past, the school offers courses in handmade boat building. Further south in Geeveston, are stories of the forestry industry, dating back to early colonisation. Tastes of the Trove Cellar doors, artisan cheese makers, boutique breweries and quality cider producers. These are just some of the Southern Trove s flavours. A strong reputation in viticulture has now expanded to regionally produced cider, beer and spirits. A tasting journey might include hilltop liqueur tastings, plump cherries from a farm gate and delicate croissants from a wood-fired bakery. With a temperate climate, four distinct seasons and good rainfall, there s little wonder diverse agriculture flourishes here. The area has always been famous for its apple industry. But a visit today rewards with a list that stretches across fine seafood, distilleries, stone and berry fruits, vineyards, mushrooms, saffron and grass-fed beef. Some of the larger wineries are ideal for that long lazy lunch in the countryside. There s also an abundance of quality cider producers, some families having been orchardists for up to four generations. Many have reinvented themselves, tending to the thirst of those acquainted with Tassie organic cider. Not only are apples used in making these refreshing drops pears, cherries and even quinces change the flavour profile. Local producers busy themselves preparing premium products including soft cheeses, wines, chocolates, breads, bush foods, locally-pressed olive oil, ice creams, yoghurts and more, easily enjoyed at events and local markets. When talented chefs have access to this produce, you can be sure that dining along the Southern Trove is a special treat. 5 D ENTRECASTEAUX CHANNEL The gateway to the Southern Trove. Known to locals as The Channel it was first discovered by French navigator Bruni D Entrecasteaux whilst seeking reprieve from the ferocious Roaring Forties. Those secret coves and protected bays Bruni happened across in 1792, are yours to enjoy today. Just 10 minutes from Hobart, the Channel Highway winds south along the coast and is considered one of Australia s great (yet lesser known) coastal drives. Peppered along the way are seaside towns of Margate, Snug and Kettering, the gateway to Bruny Island. Further along are Woodbridge, Birchs, Middleton and right round the coast road you ll find Cygnet. Drop in to Cygnet for a bite or take a dip on a warm summer s day. There s local artisan markets, petite cafes and the likes of Eggs and Bacon to discover. A high road through to the Huon Valley (Woodbridge Hill Road) offers a fresh perspective as it ambles through orchards and farmland. From here, the outlook reaches across boats on the Huon estuary to World Heritage Area wilderness beyond. insider tip Snug Falls is a pleasant one hour return walk from the Snug township. 6 BRUNY ISLAND Island hop to Bruny. In a little over an hour from Hobart you can be standing on Tasmania s original treasure island. Bruny Island is just a 45 minute drive and short ferry ride from Hobart s CBD, yet feels a world away. The petite island packs in stunning coastlines, walks such as Fluted Cape and a bounty of produce and rare wildlife. Think albino wallabies and fleeting Swift parrots. There s good reason locals frequent Bruny. They island-hop for the secluded beaches, thick-forested walks and uncrowded, laid back feel. Split by The Neck where Little penguins nest, North and South Bruny are richly diverse. Head south for the towering rainforests of South Bruny National Park, where Cape Bruny Lighthouse (circa 1838) warns distant sailors of the island s presence. Or venture north where sprawling pastures and light bushland wrap around the townships of Dennes Point and Great. Take an eco-cruise along Bruny s coastline to get up close to resident fur seals, seabirds and migrating whales if you re lucky. Back on land, taste your way through an abundant blend of fresh oysters, wine, berries, handcrafted fudge, cheese and island brews. Note: The Bruny Island Ferry service operates 365 days a year. The ferry departs hourly during April September and during the high season, October March, two ferries operate offering half hourly departures. 7 HUON VALLEY The enchanting Huon. The rolling hills of Huon Valley are just a 30 minute commute south of Hobart. Follow the bends to a lush valley where vines and stone fruits and apples thrive. The region is known for its creative community, its generational fruit growers and freshly-picked produce. From roadside stalls and awardwinning Pinot to artist studios tucked down laneways, discover it slowly. Sip slowly. Take your cider with a side of apple heritage. Mix your seasonal berries with maritime heritage. In the heart of the valley is Huonville, the last major southern township. Surrounded by orchards and World Heritage Area peaks, it s also a popular haunt for second-hand enthusiasts. About 15 minutes from Huonville, is Cygnet. This town has drawn makers, designers and those seeking a gentler pace for decades. There are galleries, affable locals, an off-grid baker and river-side picnic coves to happen upon. From Huonville, cross the bridge and you re en route to Franklin, one of the world s last refuges for the craft of wooden boat building. Forge on to the southern edge of the valley and you ll come across the township Geeveston, rich with pioneer heritage of logging days gone by. 8 FAR SOUTH Far out and further. The name is fitting. In Tasmania s Far South, you ll find yourself far from the world. It s a place where nature is raw, wild and untamed. Here, the air is some of the purest on Earth. Cool deep waters of the Southern Ocean compete for your attention with warm thermal springs. Dolomite caves create Nature s cathedrals below ground, while above, temperate rainforests invite wandering and wonder. The forests give up their secret solitude to those willing to take time on two feet. Others might opt for a carriage on the Ida Railway to take in surrounds. Deep bays of the coast shelter the seaside towns of Dover and Southport. Here, fishermen harvest the Southern Ocean s bountiful crayfish, oysters and salmon that have found their way to restaurant plates worldwide. Indulge while in the Far South, fresh from the ocean. Down this way pristine beaches stretch, often without another soul to be seen. The power of nature calls surfers to secret breaks. For the adventurous, Cockle Creek is the beginning of a trail that leads to South Cape. It s about four hours return along unspoilt coastline. 22 Activities Calendar of Events BOATING AROUND THE SOUTHERN TROVE It s a boat enthusiast s utopia nearly every Southern Trove township sits on the edge of the Huon River or D Entrecasteaux Channel. That means the distance between boat and water is never far. Jetties and boat ramps are as common as locals with tall fisherman s tales. Sheltered bays provide overnight refuge, catamarans from the CBD offer lunch escapes down The Channel and marina facilities are available at Margate, Kettering, Franklin and Port Huon. For locations of boat ramps and jetties, please visit southerntrove.com.au CYCLING ALONG THE SOUTHERN TROVE Whether you re a mountain bike buff seeking southern hillsides or an adventure tourer circumnavigating Tasmania, the Southern Trove is made for two wheels. Shorter expeditions might include a cycle loop around the Cygnet Coast Road with superb Huon River views, the Esperance Coast Road from Dover to Police Point with some short, steep undulations or a 7km pedal from Dover to Roaring Beach. For the more ambitious, take in the whole Trove on a 240km self-guided tour. Don t have your own bike? Pick up a hire bike from Huon Valley Bicycle Hire in Wilmot Road. There is a network of backroads weaving through Ranelagh, Lucaston, Crabtree and Mountain River to explore.
