2 2 CHAIR S REPORT At the end of May, NIWA s winter seasonal forecast indicated that warmer than normal conditions were likely (probabilities percent). Reasons for this are that prevailing sea temperatures around the country and across the Tasman Sea are warmer than normal and also westerly to northwesterly wind flow patterns are expected over the country. Certainly, once southerly fronts clear, we have been having some bright sunny winter days. Nevertheless, nights are long and cold, and it is important to ensure that you carry personal equipment on tramps to cover unforeseen circumstances. Please ensure that you review the lists on pages 22, 23 and 24 of the Club Handbook, and remember to make a trip leader aware of any relevant medical conditions. At the June committee meeting, we discussed a range of matters. We decided to continue using the Knox Hall on Bealey Ave for club nights, an important reason being the perception that the immediate environs are safer after dark. We also discussed First Aid requirements. The person designated for First Aid for a tramp should have a current certificate and it s good that some members have taken courses to keep their First Aid certificates alive. More are needed however. Remember the club will fund 80 percent of a course fee. Please contact Jill Lyall (jilllyallz@gmail.com) if interested. We are affiliated to the Federated Mountain Clubs. They produce a fine quarterly bulletin and undertake considerable advocacy work. We were happy to support a prospective increase in the FMC annual fee which has been set at $10 per member for the last two decades. The departure point at Princess Margaret Hospital for day trips to the Peninsula continues to cause confusion. To avoid heavy morning traffic on Cashmere Rd, midweek trips leave from Ashgrove Tce adjacent to Ferniehurst St. With less traffic, weekend trips leave from Cashmere Rd beside the river, west of the PMH entrance and close to the Ferniehurst St bridge. Lots of people contribute to running the club and I would struggle to name everyone. However, I especially want to thank David Lloyd who has been producing Going Places while Mavis Airey is abroad.
