16 Kotoka International Airport (KIA), Accra, Ghana Ghana s aviation industry is the fastest growing and the most competitive in the West African subregion. The number of scheduled, non-scheduled and Domestic carriers servicing KIA have increased from 15 in year 2000 to 38 in 2011, a growth of 40% Passenger throughput has improved from 600,000 in 2000 to 1.8 million in 2011, a growth of 35%. This compels development to cope with the heavy demand on the infrastructure

39 KIA AWARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT As a testimony to its achievements over the years: Kotoka International Airport was awarded the coveted Best African Airport Marketing of the Year 2011 at the Routes Africa Forum in Bamako and the Global Award at the World Routes world Forum in Berlin, Germany. The Managing Director won the Marketing Woman award of the year for 2011 by CIMG. Kotoka International Airport has also won the Best security and safety conscious airport in west Africa for the Year 2011 Award by Security watch Africa. IMANI Ghana

41 Conclusion With a population of 1.2 billion, coupled with its vast resources, Africa is set to become the world s competitive aviation market. There is however a need for concerted progress towards greater freedom in the movement of passengers and goods within Africa. Greater cooperation amongst African economies can only stand the region in good stead. Be assured that, Ghana Airports Company and its stakeholders will be at the forefront of these developments, playing an important role in shaping the future of the industry whilst serving the wider African and global communities. 41
