Expectation of Airport s (Cairo Airport) Awad Khir El-Din Senior Airport Operations Officer PhD Candidate 05R

Our presentation will focus on:. Past, present and future status of Cairo airport The latest achievements and projects we had in Cairo airport Why we had those projects What we benefit from those projects The disadvantage of an airport to work alone without consulting with other stakeholders. Toward harmonized services, what do we need to do with /from other stakeholders (airlines, ANSPs, other aerodromes, and maybe the state) 93

Cairo airport TB1 & TB1 Apron TB2 & TB2 Apron TB3 & TB3 Apron 94

Cairo Airport history: Started in the forties of the last century. In 1986 TB2 was constructed to serve 3.5 million passengers per year. In 2009 TB3 was constructed to serve 11 million passengers per year. The total capacity got 22 million Pax/ year.

Terminal Building 3 is dedicated to Star Alliance Arrival Hall 110 check-in counters Departure Hall Curb Area for Departure Passengers 96

Ongoing projects Automated people mover (APM). New 5StarHotel infront the new terminal, linked with an air-conditioned, 230 m long skyway, include 350 Rooms and will be managed by Le Meridien. Multi-storey car park offering a capacity of at least 800 spaces. 97

Ongoing projects (Cont d) The Cairo Cargo City: The first phase which include a Cargo Terminal capable of handling 170,000 tones The second Terminal will add another 150,000 tons. TB2 & Apron Renovation & Development. 98

Cairo international Airport has three parallel Runways (4,000m /60m) has been finished- ready for A380. Equipped now with 3 independent Runways CAI will be able to enter the 1st league of World Class Airports Airbus A380 landed at Cairo Airport Safely and smoothly on November

102

Cairo International Airport Apron Areas & Aircraft Stands Capacity: Cairo International Airport has actually a total of 174 Aircraft Stands where 20 are assisted by Air Bridges. Means approximate capacity of passenger throughput per year. In the next two years this capacity will increase up to 192 Aircraft Stands where 158 will be Remote Aircraft Stands and 34 Aircraft Stands attended with Air Bridges. Therefore, a total capacity of passenger throughput per year. 103

All Passenger Terminals are heavily concentrated in between runways 05R/23L and 05C/23C which allows an effective use of the taxiways and airside circulation, at the same time promoting a flexible and common sharing of apron areas and aircraft stands. On the other hand, all other called Airport Industrial Activities should be better distributed within the large Airport Site, such as Cargo Villages, Aircraft Fuel Farm, Catering, Aircraft Maintenance, Airport Maintenance Workshops. 104

Cairo International Airport Terminal Capacity Cairo International Airport has actually a total sqm Passenger Terminal constructed area, Excluded the future TB sqm, and the Hajj Terminal. In the next three years when both the Hajj (Seasonal) Terminal and the new TB2 will be in operation, the C.A.C. will be provided with sqm total Passenger Terminal constructed area. Which represents an approximate Processing Capacity of passenger throughput per year. 105

Strength points (Cont d) According to the TB2 Renovation Project numbers, the level of comfort for passengers as related to Aircraft Stands served with Air Bridge will represent 77,7% due to the 14 Aircraft Stands attended with Air Bridges versus 4 Aircraft Remote Stands, which represents a good result Strategically speaking, when the TB3 and new TB2 will be linked to the TB1 through the People Mover System, it will be possible to increase the total Passenger Processing Capacity to passenger throughput per year, 106

Strength points (Cont d) Hajj Terminal will represent an extra Passenger Processing Capacity per year. It is operating in conjunction to the TB3 Apron Capacity which will be already operating in conjunction to the new TB2. TB2 is out of operation since last year when it was handling approximately passenger/year. This decision was taken under the low level of service provided, and a poor connectivity with the new TB3 in

Strength points (Cont d) Under the assumed Demand Forecast and the Capacity Analysis submitted to the Mission the new TB2 will reach approximately passenger throughput in the year TB2 Passenger Terminal is expected to start its operation at the year 2014 under a LevelofComfort A instead of the proposed Level B. Consequently, it is possible to infer that the LevelofComfort A will decrease to LevelofComfort B at the forecasted period and more, still capable to offering an acceptable level of service to passengers. 108

This system unbalance in between the Passenger Processing Capacity versus Aircraft Apron Stands might provide C.A.C. with the required flexibility to manage the aircraft mix operation at the Cairo International Airport. Weakness point (Apron) Cont d Pax Processing Capacity per year Stand Capacity per year Airport Industrial Activities should be better distributed within the large Airport Site, such as Cargo Villages, Aircraft Fuel Farm, Catering, Aircraft Maintenance, Airport Maintenance Workshop, etc C.A.C. will have to provide the operation system with an effective apron management during the Hajj Period Alternatively, the Hajj Period should promote the Code F Aircraft operation in order to optimize the TB3 Apron Stand Capacity. 109

Recommendations for harmonized services we need from other stakeholders (airlines, ANSPs, other aerodromes, andmaybe the state): Continuous & very close cooperation. Regular cross meetings and brainstorming. Exchanging the experience. Analysing the case studies of both the service providers and the Authority. 110

Final word: We are doing our best to establish Cairo airport as a Hub through extensive and continuous performance evaluation and improvement (KAIZEN). 111

Thanks for attention 112

Supporting Roles: Topics DXB-GRU vv. ATL-JNB vv. CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

The iflex Story (i): Topics 40 Air Navigation Service Providers, IATA, ICAO, CANSO, ASECNA, Delta Air Lines and Emirates Airline have cooperated closely since 2009 in achieving the goal of establishing iflex as part of the ICAO concept of flexible air traffic management (ATM) as a strategic objective. CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

The iflex Story (ii): Topics - Implementation of far more than 40 iflex-routes; - Seamless access to/from the AORRA; - iflex routing are available to all operators; - This initiative is a milestone and shows what can be achieved when all stakeholders work together very close: reducing emissions and enhancing flight efficiency and safety. CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

iflex: Topics Achievements due to cooperation: Emission reduction Fuel saving Flight Time reduction Efficient use of airspace Cost saving Higher pay-load Sponsored by: ANSP s CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 An idea is born: AUSOTS Flex Tracks (2003) (Australian Organised Track Structure)

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Australian Oceanic airspace in 2003

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Flights should follow their optimum track by picking up tailwinds (jet streams) or avoiding headwinds. Flights are not restricted to flying the fixed ATS- Route structure, as they may not be the most efficient Routes.

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 AUSOTS Flex Tracks on the ATC-Controller Screen The black tracks are the normal fixed air routes. The blue tracks are displayed on the screen when the TDM becomes active. The Flex Track display permits the controller to predict the future position of the aircraft and easily detect conflicts. Without the track display there is an uncertainty.

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 December 1 st, 2003: 1 st EK flight on AUSOTS Flex Track Example: From 27JUN05 19APR06 EK operated 592 flights DXB-SYD/DXB-MEL on AUSOTS Flex Tracks. 20FEB The savings of these flights (A345) were : - nearly 57 hours trip time - > 628t Trip Fuel - average saving/flight: > 6 minutes trip time - average saving/flight: > 1.000kg trip fuel Today even the Maldives FIR, Colombo FIR and the Jakarta FIR actively cooperate with the Flex Track concept. 01JUL 2692NM

Route Structure MID/AFI/SAT in 2009: Traditional traffic flows over Africa have been North South.

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 AORRA-Area in October 2007

Missing Route Options CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 iflex Flex Tracks? Change of Concept Starting the project, the initial question came up, if 1-day Flex Routes could be supported in the MID/AFI-Region. The existing fixed ATS-Route structures were inefficient and did not support optimised west/east-operations through the African continent. The winds in winter and summer are completely different and made the flexible flights range across a massively wide area of Africa.

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Flexible Routings Change of Concept Work and coordination started, on how to make the airway structures across Africa and the Middle East more efficient; an essential building block before iflex routing could be introduced.

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Implementation of more than 40 iflex-routes

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Example of iflex-saving EK247 / 24MAR Dubai/OMDB Sao Paulo/SBGL Boeing ER Best optimised iflex-route: Trip Fuel: kg Trip Time:14:07 Distance: 6784NM Best optimised legacy -Route: Trip Fuel: kg (+908) Trip Time:14:14 (+7) Distance: 6900NM (+116)

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Side-effects of iflex-routes 20

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 iflex-routes in daily operations Emirates makes daily use of the new iflex-routes also on the sectors to/from Accra/DNMM, Lagos/DNMM, Dakar/GOOO and/or Luanda/FNLU.

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 But there is still work to do

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 The Khartoum Curve What is this? OMDB HSSS

The Khartoum Curve the best available Routing between HSSS-OMDB CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Further samples for Route improvements e.g. OMDB-HSSS e.g. FNLU-OMDB e.g. HECA-OMDB

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March and furthermore: We need to have a VISION We need better Communications and Surveillance. All airspace is the concern of ATM and a usable resource. We need the concept of Flexible Use of Airspace. We need to limit the use of Traffic Orientation Schemes. We need to encourage ANSPs to implement CPDLC/ADS. National Route Program in North America: Approval for Direct-Routings between existing NavAids / Free-Route-Airspace in Europe We need to start planning now for supporting Point-to-Point Navigation, sooner rather than later. The concept of User Preferred Routes (UPR) needs to be communicated to all Airspace Planning experts.

A happy end : iflex (Part 1) CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

iflex Topics (IATA Flexible Routings) will continue! CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 The Airlines/IATA have to give credit to the ANSPs in Africa and the Middle East which have worked with us, which have adopted these policies and which are actively looking at how they can further improve the efficient use of airspace. - Their positive attitude has allowed us to put in this essential building block in a stepped approach towards the aim of flexible flight paths.

CANSO Middle East Conference, Cairo, March 2012 Thank you very much for your cooperation. Thank you very much for your attention. Ekkehard Gutt Emirates Flight Operations Support ASM Planning & ATM Dubai/U.A.E.
