1 Certified Flight Instructor Capt. João Bosco Ferreira Helicopter Flight Instructor Capt. Bosco is a helicopter pilot since 1972 when he was transferred to the first Reconnaissance and Attack Squadron - EMRA that was created by the Brazilian Air Force to assure the aerial support for the entire Brazilian Amazonian area. During his military carrier as a helicopter pilot he had the opportunity to participate of different types of missions like: Visual Reconnaissance, Ground Attack, SAR, Troupe Transport, Border Surveillance and Humanitarian Aid Missions. He has also act as a flight instructor for all of these types of mission. Other than his experience as a fixed wing pilot, Capt. Bosco flew the following helicopter types while a military helicopter pilot: Bell 47, Bell 206, Bell 205, AS350, AS355, and SK76. On 1981 he went to France to follow a course of Helicopter Flight Test Pilot at the School EPNER (École du Personnel Navigant d Essai et de Réception) where he had the opportunity to fly other different types of helicopter like the SA342, SA315, SE313 and AS330. Once back to Brazil as the Chief of the Flight Test Division of the Center of Aeronautical Technology - CTA, the technological Unit of the Brazilian Air Force, he was in charge of the preparation and creation of the Brazilian Flight Test course (CEV), the first one in the South America till nowadays. On 1990 he was invited to leave Brazilian Air Force to occupy a position of Technical Director at Helibras, the Brazilian subsidiary of Aerospatiale Helicopters at that date. The most important mission of that position was the organization of the Flight Test Department of the company. Once it was done, with his participation in flight tests and reception flights, and with the participation of a few other test pilots he had invited to join the company, he started to develop a dedicated training for Emergency Procedures for experienced helicopter pilots. During the flights he used to perform with a wide variety of pilots coming to the company to receive new helicopters he did observe the lack of training of the pilots to correctly manage the situation when the helicopter faces an emergency. This confirmed, also for the civilian helicopter pilots, what he already knew when he was military helicopter pilot and instructor. The need of a dedicated training for Emergency Procedures, mainly autorotations, was very clear and urgent. After that observation until nowadays Capt. Bosco didn t stop to teach and train helicopter pilots on how to react once facing an inflight emergency situation. He improved the content of the Emergency Procedures Course (TPE) and put his experience at the entire market disposal, by using a Helibras s AS350B as his special tool for teaching Emergency Procedures for a large number of single engine helicopter pilots.
2 During his stay at Helibras Direction he also achieved the type rating for the following helicopter types: AS 332, AS 365, EC 120, EC 130, EC 135 and BK 117. For all these new helicopter types he became flight instructor as well. A few years later, the same AS350B has become his own helicopter. He bought it from Helibras and he created his own Flight School and Training Center, called EFAI Escola de Aviação (HAI Member), in order to continue to offer his skills and experience to the helicopter pilot s community. He is the CEO of this Flight School till today. Since that, he already performed more than trainings with different pilots and with a lot of them for more than one time. In total Cap Bosco has trained more than 850 pilots, young and experienced pilots, in Brazil and from neighbor countries as Venezuela, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile. During the last 5 years he s also training helicopters pilots coming from Angola (African Country speaking Portuguese). At the total Capt. Bosco logs around flight hours with a traceable real (complete procedure till the ground) autorotations. This last figure grants to Capt. Bosco some interesting data as follows: approximately 400 flight hours in autorotation (flying as a helicopter glider) and approximately 45 flight hours with the horn alarm on! The most important is that all this was done to transmit his experience to the helicopter pilot s community in order to enhance the safety of flight to all of us. Looking at to the other extremity of helicopter pilot s carrier, the beginners, he started to teach ab initio courses using the traditional Schweizer model 300CB and R22, and in 2014 his Flight School has bought 02 helicopters CABRI G2, due to its excellent and safe characteristics of autorotation. His Flight School EFAI prioritizes, as a work philosophy, the best students to become Flight Instructors in its flight lines in order to motivate young pilots to give his best efforts during the basic instructions and also to provide the new coming pilots with a motivated and well known capacity of instruction with high quality skills, always oriented to safety of flight. Several Aerial Police Organizations in Brazil have started its activities by choosing Capt. Bosco as its flight instructor from the starting point of their helicopter pilot s carriers and by using Capt. Bosco s instruction/experience for the step forward when reaching the single turbine helicopter type rating level, always associated with the instruction and training of the Emergency Procedures developed by him. Military Organization using single turbine helicopters have also asked for Capt. Bosco s training for his pilots. It s not rare to see Capt. Bosco training military pilots inside the military aerial bases. Again, the objective is to keep military helicopter pilots trained to supersede any emergency situation they could find in flight, permitting them to perform a safe landing. For more than 35 years transmitting his knowledge and experience for the helicopter pilot community as a flight instructor, Capt. Bosco has received a lot of awards and acknowledgments from several organizations, either from civilian, military or from Law Enforcement ones, but the most important feedback he could have are the testimonials of helicopter pilots, trained by him, that did experience emergencies in flight and could complete a safe landing thanks to the training received.
3 Time passes and cautious flight instructors become aged! Based on that, Capt. Bosco, during the last 10 years, has identified a certain number of pilots which presented adequate characteristic to take over his position in the near future. The main objective is to guarantee that his accumulated know how on teaching and training Emergency Procedures for single engine helicopters during his entire life will continue to be available and improved for the next helicopter pilot s generation, by contributing for their safety of flight as well. His successor pilot was already selected three years ago. Now, with the knowledge and skills forged by Capt. Bosco, his successor will start paving the way for Capt. Bosco to continue to contribute for the safety of helicopter flights in a different manner, maybe as a simulator instructor or reviewing the rules issued for the Helicopter Pilots Training Centers or any other related activity in Brazil. The most important thing is that his experience as a flight instructor needs to remain available to our helicopter pilot community as long as possible and it doesn t matter how it will be. So, based on Capt. Bosco s professional trajectory described above as a Flight Instructor, dedicating the great majority of his professional life instructing helicopter pilots on how to react, in case an inflight emergency occurs, to perform a safe landing, saving his passengers lives and his own life, and how Capt Bosco is recognized as a reference for the Brazilian helicopter pilots community in a country that possess almost registered helicopters and almost helicopter pilots, I feel comfortable to nominate Cap Bosco as a candidate for the Award of the Flight Instructor of the year Nomination submitted by Carlos Osorio Camara Reis, Private Helicopter Pilot and CEO of Aerotron Industry - Brazil
