The aircraft has 20 seats with three crew and travels at 150 knots / 280 kilometres / 175 miles per hour and can fly anywhere within Southern Africa from Pretoria (with limitations). Overnight at the lodge. Fly to Windhoek to clear immigration before proceeding to Maun in Botswana. Upon arrival in Maun, transfer to a light aircraft for a short flight over the Okavango Delta to the camps Khwai River Lodge/Eagle Island Lunch and afternoon at leisure followed by a wilderness experience. Dinner and overnight at the camps. Day at leisure with optional activities: guided walks, game drives, mokoro canoe trips. Overnight at camps. Board the light aircraft and transfer to Maun Airport to rejoin Rovos Air for the flight to Livingstone, Zambia. Transfer to the Royal Livingstone Hotel at the Victoria Falls Afternoon at leisure. Activities (own cost): helicopter over the falls, boat/canoe cruises, safaris, whitewater rafting, bungee-jumping, local attractions and shopping. Day at leisure. For international guests we suggest you contact your local travel agent or credit card service provider for assistance. SCHEDULING TIMES, ROUTES AND EXCURSIONS Departure and arrival times are approximate and cannot be guaranteed. We reserve the right to alter our routing at any time. PASSPORTS & VISAS The onus is on guests to ensure passports and visas, as may be required, are valid prior to departure for Africa. Visas available through booking agents; please check with relevant embassies for requirements. HEALTH Passengers are advised to take anti-malarial precautions and vaccinations as might be prescribed. 3 A HISTORY OF THE ROVOS AIR DC3 The Douglas DC3 The Douglas DC3 made its first flight on 17 December 1935 and by 1945, when production of this aircraft ceased, an estimated had been built by the Douglas Aircraft Company. Opus Semper Perfectum A Task Always Completed The Dakota, a name given by some of the World War II allies to a military version of the Douglas DC3, was used extensively during the war. One of its roles was the support of armies by transporting supplies of all kinds, carrying personnel and evacuating casualties. It also participated in airborne invasions by towing gliders containing troops and equipment, dropping paratroops and followed up aerial resupply of the troops on the ground. Rovos Air s DC3 Delaney In July 1942, 2000 C47A-DKs were ordered for the US Army Airforce from Douglas Aircraft Company s Oklahoma City Plant. In 1944, Delaney was transferred as a Douglas Dakota MK111 from the USAAF to the Royal Canadian Airforce until the war was over. She returned to Canada in 1946 where she served in various units until 1953 when she became a ground instructional airframe. In 1958, she was retired from the RCAF and sold to the Beldex Corporation in the USA. After an overhaul she was registered in 1959 with the Freeport Nickel Company then exported to Cuba to the Moa Bay Mining Company. She returned to the USA in the 1960s and passed hands from the Freeport Sulphur Company to the International Telegraph Corporation in the United Kingdom and then to Keegan AirFrame where she was operated by Transmeridian Air Cargo for a decade. Keegan sold her in 1974 to Sandriver Safaris in South Africa. During a scheduled flight between Sishen and Johannesburg in 1975, a baby girl was born on board and named Delaney a name the aircraft sports to this day! By 1986, she was standing engineless and inactive at Rand Airport near Johannesburg. In 1988, the aircraft was registered to Avia Air Charter at Wonderboom Airport near Pretoria where it underwent an overhaul and operated until the closure of Avia in They sold her to Debon Air where she was refurbished and painted in blue and white with a large Delaney on the cabin roof. In 2002, Rohan Vos of Rovos Rail purchased the aircraft from Debon Air. It underwent an extensive refurbishment, inside and out, with a new business-class configuration of 21 very comfortable green leather seats, and now sports the green and cream trim of Rovos Air. 4 ROVOS AIR SAFARI CHARTERS General Information & Terms and Conditions BOOKING Upon written request via /fax and subject to availability, the aircraft will be provisionally booked for the requested charter dates. Upon receipt of a signed quote via /fax, the holding agent/guest will be asked to confirm with a deposit payment (see below). Upon receipt of this payment, the charter booking will be confirmed. PAYMENT SCHEDULE A deposit of 50% of the tour price is required upon receipt of a signed quote and confirmation. The balance or final payment is due 14 days prior to departure. CANCELLATIONS Rovos Air reserves the right to claim a 25% cancellation fee on confirmed reservations. If cancelled or amended by the client within 48 hours of departure, the full amount due for the charter will not be reduced and will remain payable. Rovos Air may cancel the agreement without penalty if the reserved aircraft or crew become unavailable for reasons beyond its control. In this case, Rovos Air may refund all monies or may make alternative arrangements to transfer passengers, but will not be liable for any resultant loss or inconvenience. We offer insurance to South African residents. For international guests we suggest you contact your local travel agent for assistance. Please bring a copy of your travel insurance policy stating clearly the company, policy number and 24-hour medical emergency telephone number. Cancellation insurance is compulsory and will not be waived. SCHEDULING TIMES, ROUTES, EXCURSIONS AND CHANGES Any variations to the confirmed charter must be agreed to in writing by both parties. Rovos Air may not be held liable for any delays or costs that may subsequently arrive due to unfavorable weather conditions or other reasons beyond its control. Excursions cannot be guaranteed and will only be undertaken if time and circumstances permit. Departure and arrival times are approximate and cannot be guaranteed. We reserve the right to alter our routing at any time between departure and arrival points. Rovos Rail reserves the right to amend the tour price at any time prior to written confirmation of the reservation. PHOTOGRAPHY Rovos Rail reserves the right without notice to make use of any photography/film taken by our staff on the tour for general publicity purposes without payment or permission. PASSPORTS AND VISAS The onus is upon the client to ensure that passports and visas, as may be required, are valid. Please check with the relevant consulates in good time regarding applications or enquire with us at Rovos Air. Visitors to South Africa are required to have at least three blank VISA pages in their passports to receive an entry visa. Passports must be valid for at least six months from the guests return-home date. South African Home Affairs HEALTH - Please ensure you have filled out the Reservation Form to indicate if you have any medical conditions, physical disabilities or allergies. There is a basic First Aid Kit on board. - Anti-malarial precautions are recommended. Malaria areas: Swaziland, Kruger Park, Northern Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania. Recommended immunisations (not required): Hepatitis A, Polio, Tetanus, Cholera (low risk). - A Yellow Fever/Medical Exemption Certificate is essential if travelling to/from Zambia & Tanzania. Although all countries travelled through don t require this, countries guests return to after the trip often require them. - Please consult your clinic or doctor. Hotels and major dealers accept credit cards except in the Sudan. - US Dollars printed before year 2001 won t be accepted. Low denominations recommended for shopping/gratuities. Larger denominations recommended for exchanging money to local currency (especially in Tanzania) as you get a better rate. GRATUITIES Gratuities for the crew are at your discretion. If you wish to show your appreciation in this manner, there is a suitably marked envelope available from the Captain who will distribute any amounts on a pro-rata basis amongst the crew on board. An amount between of about US$10 per person per night is suggested. With regard to excursions and activities, we strongly recommend comfortable walking shoes, sun lotion and hats as well as warm clothing. LUGGAGE Luggage is limited to one soft bag per person not exceeding 20kg (dependent on number of passengers). CATERING AND DIETARY REQUIREMENTS There are no heating facilities on board the aircraft. Light snacks and a limited selection of beverages will be served during the flight. We will do our best to cater for dietary requirements provided a detailed request has been made on the Reservation Form. CHILDREN There are no child-minding facilities or activities for children on board. SPECIAL OCCASIONS We would like to celebrate with you so please advise us of your special occasion on the Reservation Form or before your arrival. A more detailed list of what is included at all these proposed destinations is available on request querida@rovos.co.za or +27 (0) RATES EXCLUDE Crew visa charges (should they be required), fuel surcharges, acute exchange rate and/or fuel price fluctuations, statutory fuel and airport increases that may occur subsequent to quote, any cost that may arise due to adverse weather conditions or force majeure, agent commission, gratuities and transfers. OF SPECIAL NOTE Although certain limited insurances have been arranged, neither Rovos Rail Tours (Pty) Ltd, nor its servants, agents or employees, shall be liable for any loss or damage to passengers luggage or effects. Insofar as one of the tours may include a visit to a game reserve and whilst attacks by wild animals are extremely rare, similarly neither Rovos Rail (Pty) Ltd, nor its servants, agents or employees, accept any liability whatsoever for any injury or incidents to passengers or their belongings. The passenger hereby waives any claim which he/she may have against Rovos Rail Tours (Pty) Ltd, its servants, agents, employees or subcontractors (all of the aforementioned being collectively referred to as Rovos Rail ) for any injury and/or loss of any nature whatsoever (including, without limiting the generality of the a foregoing, consequential loss) arising for any reason of any nature whatever directly or indirectly out of any aspect of the tour including, without limiting the generality of the a foregoing, any form of transport used for the purpose of the tour. This waiver shall be binding on the passenger s executors, heirs, trustees and dependants. The passenger records that all the services and facilities provided to the passenger are accepted voluntarily and with full knowledge that they may expose the passenger to injury, danger or loss. The passenger further records that any statement, representation or information given to him/her by Rovos Rail shall, unless given in writing, not prejudice this waiver in any manner whatsoever. The passenger indemnifies Rovos Rail in respect of any claim that may be made by any third party against it arising out of any claim in respect of which the passenger gives the aforementioned waiver. This agreement shall be governed solely by laws of the Republic of South Africa. WHETHER THE PASSENGER RETURNS A SIGNED COPY OF THESE CONDITIONS OR NOT, THE CONDITIONS WILL BE DEEMED TO HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED AND WILL BE IN FORCE UPON CONFIRMATION OF THE BOOKING.
