3 VFC News News from VFC Notice of Victoria Flying Club AGM - March The Victoria Flying Club Annual General Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 5 in the VFC pilot s lounge. The meeting will begin, as it always does, at 6:00pm with wine and cheese. The business portion of the evening gets under way at 7:00pm. What Happens at the AGM? The purpose of the Annual General Meeting is to provide an opportunity for discussion and decision making amongst club members. As a not-for-profit organization, we are governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors. Three of the main functions of the AGM are to review prior year results, discuss plans for the current year, and also to establish the board of directors for the upcoming year. Who is Eligible to Vote at the AGM? While attendance at the AGM is open to all members, voting priviliges are extended to those with Sustaining Memberships and Life Memberships only. If you have been a member in good standing of the Victoria Flying Club for 24 consecutive months, then you are eligible to apply to become a Sustaining or Life Member. Sustaining Members and Life Members recieve a discount on aircraft rentals, fuel, etc. If you have been a member for 24 consecutive months, please pick up a Sustaining Member or Life Member application from the VFC office, and plan to attend the AGM. How Can You Get Involved? The Board of Directors consists of a group of Victoria Flying Club members who use their collective knowledge and skills to conduct club business on behalf of all members. They are governed by a set of by-laws and make decisions regarding aircraft and equipment, facilities, staffing, and various other areas of club business. Sustaining and Life Members are eligible to be nominated for a director position. Nomination forms are available at the VFC office and nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the AGM. Directors must be nominated by two other Sustaining or Life Members. Being involved with the VFC Board of Directors is a great opportunity to contribute to the future of the Victoria Flying Club, and to the local aviation community. For more information, please contact VFC Manager, Gerry Mants, at info@flyvfc.com or Looking for Parking? Prime paved aircraft parking spaces. Secure, pull-in/pull-out, easy access. Please call Marcel at The Tax Man Cometh! The 2014 Income Tax forms are available at the VFC office or on page 18 of this issue. Please contact Gerry or Kathy at the club for more info. 4 VFC News THE BC AIRPORT CHALLENGE Same great challenge - with a new twist for 2015! The inaugural BC Airport Challenge was a stunning success in With individual pilots visiting up to 70 airports in BC, we covered a lot of ground and had a lot of fun doing it! The BC Airport Challenge continues in 2015, but with an exciting new twist and more chances to win! Read through to the end for all the details! Starting January 1, 2015 and running until December 31, 2015, the Victoria Flying Club is challenging pilots to visit as many airports in BC as possible. The event, known as the BC Airport Challenge, will have two categories. The first category will include pilots flying club aircraft and the second category is for owners flying their own aircraft. Here s How it Works (aka: Rules and Regs) The rules for the challenge will be quite simple: Pilots must be flying members of the Victoria Flying Club The pilot in command of an aircraft can count both departing and destination airport as visited when flying a cross country flight. Local flights will not be counted as the intent of this challenge is to get pilots flying cross country. Not all airports in BC will qualify for this challenge. Private airports and airports with unsuitable runway surfaces will be excluded. The Club has excluded airports with gravel, grass and other non-paved surfaces to protect aircraft from damage. The complete list of qualifying airports, approximately 70 of them, will be posted on the VFC website and will be available in the Club. Along with the two categories there will be awards for the number of airports visited and for the furthest airport visited from Victoria. Both awards will be offered in each category and will be given out at the Annual Wings Banquet in A monthly draw will also be made for all pilots registered in the challenge who have visited at least one airport that month. Each month a pilot will receive one ticket for each new airport visited. These tickets will be put into a monthly draw for some really cool prizes. Each month the draw count will be restarted so plan your airports carefully. Like everything in aviation there will be some paperwork. Upon returning to the club the pilot must notify the front desk about the airports visited. The front desk will record the achievement and place the information on the results poster for everyone to see. The results poster will show individual results plus the furthest airport visited by a competitor. This will allow everyone to see the results as the year progresses. Our last rule is that for each airport visited the pilot must: Take a photo of themselves or the aircraft (or both) at the airport. Alternately, the pilot can provide a piece of trivia about the airport or the region. For example, did you know that Chilliwack has the best pie at any airport in BC? What about that the first airplane ever to land in Nelson was in 1912 but it wasn t until 1971 that a permanent airport was constructed. New for 2015 Fly a Friend and Win! Want to win more prizes in this year s challenge? It s easy! Take a non-pilot friend along on a flight and you ll receive an extra entry in the monthly draw. In addition, your friend will be entered in a monthly draw for a Discovery Flight. That s what we like to call Flying it Forward! Sharing your love of aviation has never been more fun! Now it s time to have a little competitive fun and travel to new airports in BC.it should make for some great stories and adventures! For more information, contact the VFC office at Watch each issue of The Patrician for BC Airport Challenge updates and, most importantly, fly safe and have fun! February

8 COPA Quadrant Submitted by: Eleanor Eastick January 6th was a foggy night but didn t deter a dozen and a half members from attending the 7 PM COPA meeting at VFC to hear the irrepressible Les Hall talk about the local CASARA group. Do any of you remember the old bumper sticker, My Ass was Saved by CASARA? It was on the fridge in the VFC lounge to remind everyone of the lifesaving work done by Civil Aviation Search and Rescue. The February COPA Flight 6 meeting will feature John Lewis, president of the BC Aviation Museum. John will speak about the history of Victoria Airport. Victoria International Airport began as a small airfield in the 1920s. By 1940, it had become a military airport and was known colloquially as the Pat Bay Airport for years. It wasn`t until 1959 that that the International title became official and now it is one of Canada`s busiest airports. Transport Canada took it over in In 1930 the airport was owned privately by British Columbia Airways Ltd. Most of the transportation was by seaplane, and the large body of water, Patricia Bay on the west side of Saanich Peninsula provided a natural haven for the aircraft to land and take off. Patricia Bay itself is still a seaplane base under the control zone of CYYJ. We will be meeting again at the Victoria Flying Club Tuesday February 3rd at 7:00 PM. All are welcome; you need not be a COPA member to come and hear this most interesting talk on the history of our airport. For further information, please contact copaflight6@gmail.com. Tis the Season for Fly-Outs! The January 24th flyout to CAH3, Courtenay was skunked by foggy weather. Likewise on the second attempt the next day. Doggone fog be gone! There are plans for another try at CAH3 sometime in February - maybe Mother Nature will be kind! Texada Island, Gillies Bay (CYGB) is the destination for a March flyout. The dates for these two flyouts have not yet been settled but if you are interested, please flyoutbug@gmail.com or copaflight6@gmail.com and you will be contacted with the finalized plans. These destinations are fairly close to home; a good idea in the shorter and less weatherfriendly days of winter. VFC kindly gives a discount on the rental of aircraft and on fuel for members private planes when participating in flyouts. Get the Bug! February

12 Women in Aviation What s Coming Up Women in Aviation Vancouver Island Chapter January was a busy month for the Vancouver Island Chapter of Women in Aviation! We started the month and the year on January 10 with a leadership session on goal setting in flight training with Victoria Flying Club s CFI, Graham Palmer and Mary Anne Neal who is a professor in the Royal Roads University Leadership Program. On January 28 we enjoyed a tour of the Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre with Major Jenn Weissenborn and her amazing team. They spent a lot of time with us and we thank them for that. And on January 31 we were privileged to assist 25 of the 23rd Victoria Girl Guides to earn their Aeronautics badge as part of the National Girl Guide STEM Challenge. You can see from the photos on the following page that it was a busy day - and a lot of fun! Please join us on Saturday, February 7 from 1300 to 1500 in the President s Lounge of the Shell Aerocentre, with the dynamic Tracey Burns, Executive Business Coach. Tracey started the series off, and will return to hit us hard with accountability, responsibility and redefining your goals. 15 VFC News PHOTO CONTEST February/March Theme: Why I Fly! Many pilots fly for a career, and many are in it just for fun. For still others, the attraction is the challenge that aviation presents, or the freedom it offers. Some pilots just like the view from high above the world. You might see flying as a social activity, or as a means of escape. The reasons for flying are many, and we want to see yours! During February and March, send your Why I Fly photos to thepatrician@shaw.ca or post them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/flyvfc. We ll put the photos in an album on Facebook and you can share it with your friends, family, contacts, and colleagues and request votes. VFC prizes are always fabulous so you won t want to miss out on your chance at victory this time around! The only criteria for this contest is that the photo should be a representation of what you love about aviation, or why you fly, hence the contest name, Why I Fly.
