They've proved it in the past on a number of occasions and the lessons learned were well served on the return to Indiantown. Along with their family and friends at Indiantown Airport, this day proved to be one special gathering of the clans. The 1

2 Florida Antique Biplane Association welcomed their sister organization, the Florida Cub Flyers (AAA Chapter), to help fill the huge grassy ramp at X58 with fine examples of the Cub breed and antique biplanes of all variety. What a day we enjoyed together. A gathering of the world class BS artists and aviators showed up. Mother Nature didn't exactly add her favor to our function, but our intrepid aviators were not deterred. The "real man" award goes to FABA President Jon Rising. He flew his beautiful PT 17 Stearman from Ocala (149 miles) in VERY COLD air. Maybe there was no snow and ice but it was plenty cold for Florida flying in an open cockpit. He awarded/earned himself the "Extended Flight-Quick Drain" fitting during our meeting for his long, painful flight. This consisted of a catheter. Pattie Duffy, our official photographer and ICU nurse, volunteered to insert it for Jon's return trip home. Jon's only request was for a longer catheter! I'm not exactly sure why he'd need that with the air being SO cold? Maybe he's daydreaming again? We only had a very few "weenies" not attempt to brave the elements. Can you imagine those aviators of yesteryear flying the mail in open cockpit aeroplanes in all manner of ugly weather? I got a taste and don't think I'd be applying for that job. 2

3 The Dawsons had plenty of hot coffee and tea ready to add to their warm welcome to those who shared the special camaraderie of the day. Clyde was seen wandering the ramp over by the two other Staggerwings that showed. He said he was checking out the recently arrived parts inventories that he might need for his Staggerwing. We had three Staggerwings gracing the grassy ramp. Joe Duke and Jim Hawkes (FABA VP) flew in the two other mobile parts departments. Even though we were privileged to have three of the Cadillac of antique biplanes attend this function, the exceptional quality of the remainder of the bi-winged fleet in attendance cannot be discounted. Everywhere you looked, there was perched another beautiful old two winged bird. The number rivaled those you would see at Sun 'n Fun or Oshkosh. Not only did the membership bring out their old two winged flying machines, but they rose to the occasion bringing a plethora of side dishes and desserts to add to the delicious lunch of BBQ'd chicken and pork. The Dawson Girls worked their butts off making sure everyone was served with grace, elegance and good fun. As a good friend once said, "What's better than flying and FREE food?". Of course, the food isn't free. Nothing worthwhile is. Your dues, the generosity of the Dawson's and the members who brought side dishes and dessert made this all possible for the rest of us. On behalf of those who "rode free", thank you. 3

4 As a direct result of this gathering, there were several in attendance who will join our ranks. Special guests, who own antique biplanes, are always welcomed to attend one of our functions and meet some of the fine folks who populate our ranks. We are a special group of aviators with a common bond. We pride ourselves on being a flying organization and not another newsletter/magazine aviation group. Those "paper flyers" serve a purpose but real aviators actually fly. That would be us. We proved the point at X58. If you missed this, shame on you. If you miss another, double shame on you. Pay your dues and not participate if you like, but you're missing the main point of this whole endeavor. Plenty more to come with any luck. I'll be sending members ALL the images I receive, resized for distribution. 4

6 LUNCH Over the holiday week between Xmas and New Years, a group of our biplane buffs and buffettes got together for a flight down to FXE to the Jet Cafe for lunch. They serve excellent gourmet food. This is NOT your typical airport "greasy spoon". The folks at the FBO, Banyan, could not have been nicer. They literally rolled out the red carpet for us. I suspect it's not often that three antique biplanes and a Carbon Cub Floater show up at this jet port for a formation landing and take off. Well, maybe not a really tight formation but a close resemblance to at least an Air Force formation flight (within sight). If you get together with other FABA members for such an experience, please send a report and picture (s). 6

7 UP THE KISSIMMEE RIVER As you all are probably aware, we enjoy Chapter status of the Antique Airplane Association, Inc. Our sister organization in Florida, The Fllorriida Cub Fllyerrss,, IIncc.., has been good enough to include us on their odyssey flight up the Kissimmee River in February and lunch afterwards. We'll all rendezvous at OBE on the morning of the trek, eat breakfast if necessary, get our flight briefing at 0900 and launch toward the mouth of the Kissimmee at Lake Okeechobee. We'll be transitioning through the Avon Park Bombing Range and have been given exclusive access to the airspace by the USAF. During the flight up the river, we'll see the various Corp of Engineer projects completed and underway which have been designed to re-direct the flow of the river to more or less recreate the switchback style flow originally designed by God. The design of man has drained the Kissimmee River basin as planned, but this straightening of the river has caused some pollution problems for our Lake Okeechobee as the run-off from the basin is carrying "stuff" to the lake not originally in God's plan. After reaching the headwaters of the Kissimmee River at Lake Kissimmee, we'll head over to Lou and Lynn Amato's house at Lake Clinch Airpark and enjoy one of our legendary gatherings. Lou and Lynn and other residents of Lake Clinch Airpark are welcoming our groups to fly in or float in. This is going to be one very neat expedition. Another reason to be a member of the Fllorriida Anttiique Biipllane Assssoccattiion,, IIncc.. If you haven't joined FABA, you might want to consider the idea in order to be included in our FLYING activities. The membership has already received their personal invitations to this function via the regular channel. 7

These folks don't want to deal with individual orders and want quantity orders. I'm out of the paraphernalia business for now, but if you would like to undertake the "honchoing" of an order, let me know and I'll give you some dual instruction as to how to go about handling an order for the group. 8

9 FLIGHT SUIT SIZING I've been flying for 35 years now and until recently have not found a reason to wear a flight suit. But I've now realized the benefits of donning one of these things. One benefit is the extra layer of clothing that helps keep you warm in an open cockpit aeroplane when flying in cold weather. There are others. Anyway, I've noticed something else during this learning process, flight suiting sizing. I normally wear a size 42R leather flight jacket. It fits just fine so I ordered a size 42R flight suit. It doesn't fit so fine. The next step was ordering a size 44R and it is marginally fine. I'm thinking a 46R would be just about right but I'm committed to reducing my body size to fit the 44R. Now you could say I'm just a "fat boy" and I probably wouldn't argue with you, but... In case you haven't thought about this, fighter pilots wear flight suits. Many of these fellows (not all) have a tendency to be diminutive and I contemplate they have always had a desire to be a little larger in stature. So, I'm thinking they are the culprits behind the sizing of these flight suits. Kind of like the re-sizing of women's clothes in recent years (but in the opposite direction), if you get my drift. Keep this mind when you order one of these things. 9

18 FOR SALE: 1927 Pheasant H-10, one of 3 known to exist and the only one that is airworthy. This aircraft is a total rebuild, new wings, fuselage etc. too much to list. Curtiss OX-5 engine. The plane was acquired by the prior owner in 1929 following an accident. He restored it over the years but by the time it was completed, he was too old to fly.
