2 HI THERE! This magazine is especially for children and we hope you enjoy it! You will find useful information and ideas in the following pages to help with your Our World Irish Aid Awards project. The theme for this year s Awards is: FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET Since the year 2000, countries all over the world, including Ireland, have been working really hard together to fight poverty and protect the environment, through the United Nations. There have been some really outstanding results; since 2000, the number of extremely poor people has been cut by half, and the number of children getting an education has almost doubled. BUT there are still a lot of problems in our world. In this magazine, you can find out how the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development can protect the planet and create a better future for all the world s people. You will also read how Ireland, through Irish Aid, is playing its part to achieve the Global Goals by helping children and their families to overcome poverty in over 80 countries. Have fun with the articles, stories, pictures and puzzles in this magazine and get some great ideas for projects for the Our World Irish Aid Awards 2017! 3 3 WHAT IS IRISH AID? Irish Aid is the Irish Government s aid programme to fight world poverty on behalf of all the people of Ireland. Irish Aid has 8 PARTNER COUNTRIES: Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia in Africa, and Vietnam in Asia, and works with these countries to help the poorest families to improve their lives. Irish Aid gives funding to aid organisations such as Trócaire, Medical Missionaries of Mary, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Concern, Gorta-Self Help Africa, UNICEF and many, many others, to fight hunger and poverty in over 80 countries all over the world. Irish Aid works with governments and aid organisations to protect the environment, grow more food, create jobs, build schools and hospitals etc, so that poor communities can improve their lives and have a better future for their children. This is called development aid. When disasters strike, Ireland immediately sends help, like medicine, tents and food supplies, to people suffering from war, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. This is called humanitarian aid. IRELAND IS A WORLD LEADER IN FIGHTING POVERTY! Be proud - Ireland s Irish Aid programme is ranked as one of the best in the world! 7.5 BILLION IS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD TODAY 57 MILLION # children in the world have no education Ireland is working hard with other countries to try to achieve the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development (see page 5) to create a better world and a better future for all people everywhere. 6 MILLION babies and small children die every year as a result of poverty 418 MILLION 836 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN EXTREME POVERTY ON LESS THAN 2 A DAY CHILDREN MAKE UP HALF OF THE WORLD S EXTREME POOR ISRAEL JORDAN ALGERIA LIBYA EGYPT SAUDI ARABIA UAE PAKISTAN INDIA NEPAL BHUTAN BANGLADESH MYANMAR (BURMA) LAOS MAURITANIA MALI NIGER BURKINA FASO BENIN COTE TOGO NIGERIA D'IVOIRE GHANA CHAD CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC SUDAN ERITREA YEMEN SOMALIA OMAN THAILAND CAMBODIA CAMEROON GABON REP. 4 4 WEB OF CONNECTIONS The world is like a spider s web; it is interconnected, very strong and flexible, but if one strand gets damaged, all are affected. In our daily life we are linked to and rely upon people and places, near and far. Think about the people and places that you rely on in your everyday life who looks after you, making sure that you can grow up strong, healthy, and with a good education? Where does the food you eat come from? Who writes the music you listen to, or the books you read? Who makes the clothes you wear? Who built the roads where you live, and the school you attend etc? Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves. All things are bound together All things connect. Quote attributed to Chief Seattle (c ) of the Suquamish Tribe (Washington State, USA) USE THE SPIDER S WEB TO WRITE OR DRAW ABOUT YOUR CONNECTIONS TO THE WORLD

5 THE GLOBAL GOALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT In 2015, the United Nations agreed a set of 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development to deal with the most serious problems facing the world, such as poverty and hunger, injustice and damage to the environment. The aim of the Global Goals is to make a better life for all people now and in the future. 193 countries, including Ireland, have promised to work really hard together to achieve the Goals by the year What age will you be in 2030? WRITE THE NUMBERS FROM THE TEXT OF EACH GLOBAL GOAL ON THE CORRECT LOGO FOR THAT GOAL: 1. End poverty 2. End hunger 3. Make sure everyone can live healthy lives 4. Make sure everyone gets a good education 5. Make sure that women and girls get the same chances as men and boys 6. Make sure that everyone has access to clean water and proper toilets 7. Make sure that everyone has enough heat, light and power without damaging the environment 8. Help countries to develop and provide good jobs in a way that benefits everyone 9. Build schools, hospitals and roads, and promote businesses and industries that make people s lives better 10. Make sure that everyone is treated fairly, and that countries treat each other fairly 11. Make cities environmentally friendly and safe communities, where people can live well 12. Make sure we don t buy too many things so that we do not use up the earth s scarce resources 13. Act now to fight climate change 14. Look after the life in our oceans and seas 15. Look after forests, animals and the earth itself 16. Work for peace and justice inside and between countries 17. Countries will work together as partners to achieve the Global Goals and make the world a better place for everyone LET S LOOK MORE CLOSELY AT SOME OF THE GLOBAL GOALS In 2016, the United Nations reported some good results achieved for Global Goals 14 and 15. The percentage of protected areas of land and water in the world has increased, and this means that the diversity of animals, plants and sea life (biodiversity) can be better looked after (conserved). This is really important because we know that human activity is contributing to the fact that worldwide fish stocks are decreasing, and over 23,000 species of plants, fungi (mushrooms) and animals are dying out (facing extinction). Can you think of any connections between Goal 3 and Goal 15? Name one thing you already do to help achieve Goal 15. Goal 17 is about countries working together to achieve the other Goals and make the world a better place. Can you think of some reasons why working together is a good idea?

So far, 398 bird species, 123 mammals (including humans!), 34 reptiles (snakes, lizards, crocodiles and turtles) and 43 amphibians (like frogs or toads) have been discovered there. But 40 years ago, the Park came under threat during a civil conflict in Mozambique which ended in Hungry soldiers killed many of the Park s large animals, especially elephants, for their meat and ivory. Later, illegal hunters or poachers killed more animals - and the elephants, Cape buffaloes, hippos, lions, warthogs, and antelopes almost disappeared. This in turn impacted on the environment and the people living around Gorongosa. For example, without zebra herds to graze on grass and shrubs, dangerous wildfires happened more often. PHILANTHROPIST: a person who uses their own money to fund good works. INDIAN OCEAN Mozambique is an Irish Aid partner country since 1996 Photo courtesy of Gorongosa National Park In 2008, the Government of Mozambique and Greg C. Carr, an American philanthropist, set up the Gorongosa Restoration Project to restore and conserve (protect) the wildlife and the landscape, and return Gorongosa to its original condition. Farmers from the northern boundary of the Park learning different ways to get the most from their land. Photo courtesy of Gorongosa National Park The health of the Park s wildlife and landscape is directly linked to the wellbeing of the 200,000 people living around the Park. They face huge challenges, with not enough land to grow food, many health problems and very few doctors or clinics, and low levels of education. These communities are also affected by conflict and drought. In 2014, Irish Aid began funding the Gorongosa Restoration Project in its work with the communities on the northern boundary of the Park. This funding provides small farmers with advice, seeds, fertilizers, tools, and access to markets to sell their crops. It is also used to give local families access to clean water and to create irrigation systems for school vegetable gardens. The restoration of the Park and the development work with the local communities is not easy. But it is already making a big difference and, with the continued partnership between the local people, the Government of Mozambique, the Gorongosa Restoration Project and funders like Irish Aid, this work can progress and benefit both people and wildlife.

LET S MEET TONGA TORCIDA Hi, my name is Tonga Torcida and I was born and raised in the hills of Gorongosa. To go to secondary school, I had to move to Villa Gorongosa and live with a family friend. In 2006, when I was 15 years old, a helicopter landed near where I was playing ball and people got out. I knew some English so I greeted the visitors. A man called Greg asked me to guide the group to the Murombodzi waterfalls. That was the day that Greg Carr, the founder of the Gorongosa Restoration Project, predicted that I would become a guide at Gorongosa National Park! After that I visited the Park myself and began to work there during school holidays. I was given books and binoculars, and I studied the local flora (plants) and fauna (animals). In 2011, I met the famous biologist, Professor E.O. Wilson, and in 2012 I served as his assistant during his second visit to Gorongosa. I m now doing a degree in Wildlife Management in Tanzania. I still work in Gorongosa during my holidays. I m a member of the Lion Project team. This work involves monitoring, tracking and identifying lions that are new to the Park. Did you know that every lion has a unique pattern of whisker-spots on each side of its face? Just like a human fingerprint, no two whisker-spot patterns are the same, and they don t change over time! BIOLOGIST: a scientist who studies human and animal life. I am very proud of what the Gorongosa Restoration Project, in partnership with the Mozambican government, is doing for the local communities. We run community education programmes to help farmers to get more from their land. We also encourage people not to cut down the rainforests because this impacts badly on the Park s wildlife and communities. We bring children from local schools to the Park. We want them to keep their sense of wonder in nature, to honour wildlife, and to want to protect it, so that Gorongosa Park exists for future generations, not only for Mozambicans but for the rest of the world. 8 Tripod, a lioness who lost her foot in a trap, was looked after by Gorongosa vets and is a favorite with visitors to the Park. Photo courtesy of Gorongosa National Park Children taking part in Gorongosa s environmental education programme. Photo courtesy of Gorongosa National Park Tonga Torcida. Photo courtesy of Gorongosa National Park POSTCARD TO TONGA IMAGINE YOU CAN SEND A POSTCARD TO TONGA You could Tell Tonga what you thought of his story. Ask a question about his life and the work that he does in Gorongosa. Describe something that you like about the nature around your home or school. Tonga Torcida C/O Real Nation Fumbally Court Fumbally Lane Dublin 8 Write one thing that you and other children in Ireland do to protect the environment. Remember what Tonga said about the unique patterns on every lion s face? Be inspired by the patterns you see in nature, like the patterns on the wings of a butterfly, the timber in a tree or the veins in a leaf, to design the stamp on your postcard, then colour in the outlines of the animals that can be found in Gorongosa National Park.

9 REFORESTATION IN GORONGOSA The mountain rainforests on Mount Gorongosa were seriously damaged during the 16 year civil conflict in Mozambique. As soldiers fought in the surrounding areas, farming families moved up the mountain for safety and cleared about one third of the trees for small plots of corn and potato. The trees on Mount Gorongosa are special as they are part of a large rainforest. The forest is full of amazing creatures, some of which exist nowhere else on Earth! But the trees are special for another, very important reason: they allow the soil beneath them to retain all the rain that falls in the wet season. This water is then slowly released throughout the year, keeping the rivers and lakes in the valley flowing, and keeping the entire ecosystem of Gorongosa, healthy. Reforestation is really important because without those trees, life would be much harder for everybody and everything later in the dry season. As part of the restoration of the Park, the Park rangers work closely with communities living near Mount Gorongosa, to nurture little tree seedlings. Local people sing as they walk up the mountain to plant the seedlings, and their songs tell the mountain and the rivers not to cry, that help is on the way. DEFORESTATION: Removal of trees for firewood or to clear the land for farming or houses or business use. REFORESTATION: Planting tree seedlings on land where trees have recently been cut down. Photo courtesy of Gorongosa National Park THE SPIRIT OF A TREE IS SHADE The spirit of a tree is shade. The spirit of grass is dew. Everything is useful. Everything speaks. This poem has been translated from Chi-Gorongozi, the language spoken in Gorongosa, into English and Portuguese. Think about the meaning of the poem. Can you use your own words to explain what the poem is about? Why not use this space to have a go at translating the poem into another language? or Make up your own poem about the importance of nature or the links between people and planet. then illustrate your poem using lots of colour!

GORONGOSA AND THE GLOBAL GOALS STEPS FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET 10 Think about the conservation and restoration that is happening in Gorogosa National Park; the Irish Aid supported development work with local communities; the Lion Project; the way the Park Rangers and the people are working together to replant native trees on Mount Gorongosa etc. Which of the 17 United Nations Global Goals can you link to what you know about Gorongosa (see page 5)? Imagine that the Global Goals logos are leaves on a tree. Draw the logos of the Global Goals you think are linked to the Gorongosa Restoration Project, then colour the remaining blank leaves. As you know, 193 countries, including Ireland, have promised to work really hard together to achieve the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development by the year Imagine what the world will be like in the year 2030 if all 17 Global Goals are achieved! Draw what you think our world will be like in 2030 if the Global Goals have been achieved - for you, your friends and family, other people in Ireland and elsewhere around the world. Once you ve drawn our world in 2030, think about the steps you can take to contribute to the achievement of the Global Goals. Write your ideas in the stepping stones leading to our world in 2030.
