3 3 4x4 Mobile Safaris

4 Mobile Safaris Our contemporary interpretation of the early explorers expeditions, where luxury is defined by the experience of exclusivity and the overwhelming feeling of being surrounded by kilometres of unexplored bush teeming with wildlife. The light of a campfire to provide you with warmth after sunset, millions of stars for a ceiling and the sounds of wilderness to accompany your dreams. Our Mobile Safaris begin where the beaten roads end. Our expert guides will lead you to discover the best, most secluded and wildest areas of the National Parks. You will live an unforgettable experience in close contact with the most pristine African nature, hundreds of kilometres away from civilisation as you know it. Our Mobile Safaris use specially modified 4x4 vehicles that can host up to 9 passengers plus 2 staff members and that guarantee excellent visibility to all participants during game-viewing activities. All vehicles have sides made of canvas that can be closed during transfers to offer better protection from the wind and completely removed during game-viewing activities. Nights during Mobile Safaris can be either camping or lodging. Each safari is guided by a professional local guide (English speaking) and a chef, to maximise your experience. Our Mobile Safaris are usually Non-Participative : guests don t have to worry about any of the bothering activities usually associated with camping (such as setting up and taking down tents, stretcher beds, cooking or cleaning). Camping is done in large sized (3x3x2mt) dome tents equipped with stretcher beds or mattresses and sleeping bags, while lodging safaris make use of strategically located, comfortable, mid-range accommodations. Meals are prepared by our accompanying chef directly on the campfire inside the National Parks, while your guides will be able to indicate the best restaurants for you to eat in every major city. 6 Choice of the destination Zambia: Zambia is one of the most uncontaminated countries of the region, both from a naturalistic and cultural perspective. Zambian National Parks are among the less touristic parks of all Africa, still largely wild and unexplored: for these reasons they are considered the best National Parks for gameviewing activities. In Zambia, thanks to the scarce presence of tourists and the extraordinary abundance of wildlife, you will live unforgettable experiences in direct contact with nature and really close encounters with untamed wildlife. Zambian National Parks are among the best preserved in Africa and every year they win international awards such as Park with the lowest CO2 footprint worldwide and Most eco-sustainable Park in Africa. Zambia is also the country that offers the widest range of game-viewing activities: Game-drives, walking safaris, night-drives, canoe safaris, boat safaris, etc. and is considered heaven for leopards lovers and birdwatchers, due to their abundances and ease of sighting. From a cultural standpoint, Zambian population is very open and friendly and this country offers genuine local interactions without risks or hassles. However, Zambia is also a very vast country so, unfortunately, travelling by road between National Parks and other touristic attractions can involve long transfers. Moreover, the wild conditions of its Parks and roads can really take a toll on the vehicles, so it s always necessary to carry your sense of adventure with you. Most suitable for: Real adventurers, people wishing to live extraordinary safari experiences. Real wildlife lovers (especially felines) who do not want a Safari suitable for everyone. Those who are not afraid of facing long road transfers in order to live more genuine and uncontaminated wilderness experiences. Those travellers with a sense of adventure who do not get turned down by potential hiccups along the way. Less suitable for: People who prefer short transfers and mainly on tarmac road. Those who are afraid of travelling in areas with no phone signal. Those who cannot give up electricity not even for a day or two. Botswana: Universally renown as the African country that hosts the largest elephant population, Botswana sets the scene for unforgettable adventures far from the more touristic destinations. Nature in Botswana, green and rich in the northern region and desert and arid in the Kalahari and the Pans, is wild and extremely well kept, even though in the latest years some areas have opened to more mass-tourism. Mobile Safaris conducted in the northern regions of the country offer the possibility to conduct wild camping experiences, that is camping in wild, unfenced areas that are not equipped with running water, bathrooms nor electricity. Also, each park merges into the next, allowing visitors to live for days in close contact with nature, without seeing any sign of civilisation. Through the arid areas, however, distances can be wide and therefore transfers can be quite long. Most suitable for: Bush lovers and wild camping lovers. Game-drive lovers (walking safaris as well as night drives are not allowed in the most of the Country) and, generally speaking, wildlife enthusiasts. Some of the arid destinations (Central Kalahari, Pans and Nata) are also particularly suitable for people seeking unusual sightings: desert lions, never-ending landscapes, arid-habitat wildlife, etc. Less suitable for: Those who want to transfer only on tarmac roads. Those afraid of travelling for many days in areas without mobile phone network. Those who cannot stay for several days in a row without electricity and running water. Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe is a Country that offers unspoiled landscapes, breathtaking National Parks, history and culture in a single destination: its parks, such as Hwange and Mana Pools, provide very high level safari experiences, thanks to the richness and abundance of wildlife and the possibility to spot all of the Big5, while its archeological sites patronaged by UNESCO offer a unique insight to the precolonial history of Southern Africa. In Zimbabwe, we offer a Mobile Safari that is suitable for all travellers, regardless of their level of experience, with short transfers on tarmac toads and nights in mid-rage, but nice lodges. Most suitable for: Travellers who want a more comprehensive type of Safari, conjugating nature, history and culture in a single Tour. Less suitable for: Those who are exclusively focussed on wildlife. People looking for a more adventurous Safari 6

28 ZAMBIA Cultural Expedition: Likumbi Lya Mize Days: 13 Camping and Lodging SAFARI OVERVIEW Type of vehicle: 4x4 Safari Vehicle (max. 9 passengers + 2 staff), removable canvas sides for excellent visibility during game-drives No. of Participants: 5+ Staff: English-speaking professional guide Chef Meals: Specified in the itinerary as: B(reakfast) / L(unch) / D(inner) Start: Lusaka End: Lusaka Accommodation: Lodging everywhere except Ngonye Falls and Kafue N.P. INTRODUCTION: A cultural expedition in the heart of Zambian traditional masquerade: The Likumbi Lya Mize of the Luvale people. Accommodation is mixed camping in the parks and lodging in the main cities. You will be followed by a local guide and a local chef to maximise your experience. The Likumbi Lya Mize has been declared "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO in It's the final and most exciting part of mukanda, an initiation ritual for boys between the ages of eight and twelve. This ritual is celebrated by the Vaka Chinyama Cha Mukwamayi communities, to which the Luvale, Chokwe, Luchazi and Mbunda people belong who live in the northwestern and western provinces of Zambia. Come with us and discover an incredible Cultural Experience, that only a small number of persons outside the Luvale tribe have had the honour and privilege to see. The ceremony actually starts about 1 to 3 months before, when young children are taken away from their village to symbolise their "death" as children, tundanji, who do not belong to the world of the living. The mukanda involves the circumcision of the initiates, tests of courage and lessons on their future role as men and husbands. Each initiate is assigned a specific masked character, who is with him throughout the entire process. These characters include Chisaluke, who represents a powerful and wealthy man with spiritual influence; the Mupala, the lord of the mukanda and protective spirit with supernatural abilities; Pwevo, a female character who represents the ideal woman and is responsible for the musical accompaniment of the rituals and dances. The Makishi is another masked character, representing the spirit of a deceased ancestor who returns to the world of the living to assist the boys. The end of the mukanda is celebrated with a graduation ceremony called chilende. The whole village attends the Makishi dance and the audience is entertained with pantomime-like artistry until the graduates re-emerge from the camp and are reintegrated as adult men into their communities and families. This ritual has an educational function of transmitting practical survival-skills as well as knowledge about nature, sexuality, religious beliefs and the social values of the community. The ceremony was banned by the colonial masters in 1934 but paramount chief Kalonga Gawa Undi Chivunga revived the ceremony in Since then it has been an annual event. On the day of the ceremony, the centre of attraction is the main area where all the dignitaries are seated. The entrance of paramount chief Kalonga Gawa Undi into the arena signifies the start of the ceremony. Visitors from Zambia and Chewas from neighbouring Malawi and Mozambique are entertained to a variety of dances that are from three countries. A variety of dances like Gule Wamukulu (Nyau), Gologolo, Makanja, Muganda, Chinamwali, Chimtali (the female dance) and many others are performed during the ceremony. The Nyau or popularly known as the Gule Wamukulu among locals, is the most celebrated dance among the Chewa people. The Nyau dance (Gule Wamukulu) was officially recognized by UNESCO in Nyau dancers are referred to as Vilombo (animals) in Chewa, believed to emanate from dead spirits. There are a lot of Nyau dances at any ceremony. The type of the dance depends to a larger extent on the nature of the occasion. More than 30 different Nyau dances are performed at a single festival with each dancer adorning a different mask in an array of colours. Some of the Nyau masks are a reflection of human behaviour in true life. The people can tell the type of Nyau entertaining them through its dress or mask. Some Nyau are frightening while others are fun. Also part of the Kulamba ceremony is an annual initiation ceremony for the young girls who have come of age. The Anamwali or young girls have been in confinement where they have spent time being taught skills and responsibilities of womanhood. Kulamba traditional ceremony brings together chiefs from 137 chiefdoms in Malawi, 33 in Mozambique and 42 in Zambia.
