2 Trip Leadership We use the very competent, knowledgeable and able English speaking local people - the wildlife and mountain experts who will run the on ground arrangements. They are the ideal interface in East Africa. The safari section leader will therefore be different from the mountain leader/guide each are experts in their respective fields. The Mt Kenya and Kili leader/guide will be supported by other staff to carry gear/cook meals/establish campsites etc. On Zanzibar there is no local leader and none is required, as this is largely a rest and recreational section. Trip Overview and Organisation We the people of Tanzania would like to light a candle and put it on top of Mount Kilimanjaro which would shine beyond our borders giving hope where there was despair, love where there was hate, and dignity where there was only humiliation. Julius Nyerere, past president of Tanzania. An inscription on top of Kilimanjaro. High Places provides the itinerary and services for this trip ex Nairobi, and are referred to as HP. HP are an independently run mountain travel company with an office in Mapua, NZ. They have been successfully providing small group trips and expeditions throughout the world since Small, friendly, with a focus on being environmentally aware and using some of the best and most experienced leaders available. HP have evolved a variety of wonderful trips for over 20 years and they can be relied upon to provide the finest possible experience of its type. A well balanced visit to Kenya and Tanzania combining an ascent on Kenya and Kilimanjaro - the highest points on the continent of Africa, terrific game viewing and plenty of culture. On the Kilimanjaro trek we take 7 nights/8 days to traverse the massif, which allows for excellent acclimatization. This is very important as too many walkers on Kili fail, not through technical difficulties, but because they underestimated the time it takes to acclimatize. The extra time increases the enjoyment of the walking as well as the chances of success, likely to be 100% based on past experience. On Kili we normally walk 5 7 hours each day and take several guides so there is no need to stick together allowing us to walk at a range of paces. The section of the route up to Kilimanjaro s summit is a laborious but unavoidable rocky track with some scree, however, technical climbing knowledge and equipment are not required. On this day we will be walking for about 12 hours. Note, however, that this long hard day is not essential. Anyone who wants to enjoy the mountain without necessarily reaching the summit, can climb to the crater rim. Our equipment will be carried in the vehicle or by local porters. You will only carry what you need for the day : clothes, waterproofs, camera, valuables, snacks, etc. We use porters to carry all the gear and food on Kili. This is a normal job for the locals and a valuable way of earning money. We form personal contacts with the local people and they are a valued part of the team. As in all mountain areas, unexpected local conditions may make paths difficult. Sometimes we may have to make alterations to the route which may include more (or less!) walking. When travelling in a wildlife area, an experienced park ranger accompanies us. Accommodation. While game viewing and visiting villages we stay in safari type camps or bandas (simple chalets). Prior to Kili we stay in comfortable guesthouses in Nairobi and Arusha. On Kili there is no permanent accommodation, so we use roomy two person mountain tents. Camping gives us independence and flexibility, and allows us to explore the wilder and more remote areas. The trip to Mt Kenya combines mountain huts and camping. Food. On safari and on trek, all meals are provided plentiful and nourishing. If you state you need a special diet, vegetarian etc on the registration form, we will be able to cater with prior notice. Food is cooked on gas stoves by our own cooks. Tipping. Tipping in East Africa has been customary since explorers and safari seekers first started travelling there and using the services of local people. It is a sensitive issue and we do not automatically accept the practice of tipping, as we prefer to make honest and fair payments for services received. However, where there is a strong local tradition of tipping, it is not possible to avoid this without upsetting local staff, who work extremely hard to make your trip
3 successful. We suggest you budget around USD$360 for tips and consider donating some clothing or equipment to local staff at the end of the trip. Climate. This trip is timed to run during the East African dry season when temperatures are pleasant with low humidity and the conditions for walking, travelling and wildlife viewing are optimal. Rain is still possible during this period but it s usually no more than an afternoon shower. Air temp s in the lowlands and foothills are around 20C 30C, although evenings can be chilly. Conditions in the mountains usually form a pattern of glorious warm sunny mornings, with an overcast afternoon, rain or mist, then a beautiful sunset and a clear star-lit night. Some nights higher up can be well below freezing (as low as minus 10C). Strong winds on Kilimanjaro can make the temperatures feel much colder. Clothing, therefore, should be adaptable, ranging from shorts and T-shirts through to waterproofs and thermals. A full gear list will be supplied later on. There will be a steady heat on Zanzibar, but tempered by ocean breezes. Altitude. Above 3000m where the air is thinner, the pressure is lower and there is less oxygen available. Acclimatisation is the process by which the body adapts to these conditions. The key to this is a good itinerary with a gradual initial height gain, walking at a slow and steady pace, and increasing fluid intake drinking 4 litres a day is advisable above 3000m. Many people have some minor side effects from altitude, such as headache, nausea or general lassitude. Diamox has proved very usual for many people, as this drug can reduce these symptoms. More details about Diamox will be in your pre-trip newsletter. Transport. Between the walking areas we use minibuses or 4 X 4 s. Driving times are kept to a minimum. We also use vehicles for wildlife viewing. When we are walking, any extra gear not required can be safely stored in the vehicle or at our base camp. Language. While English will be spoken by our respective section leaders, English and Swahili are the official languages of both Kenya and Tanzania. Most of the local staff will also speak English. Itinerary Day 1. Tue 29 th Jan. Nairobi Arrive in Nairobi, transfer to the guesthouse and meet up. No meals today. Day 2. Wed 30 th Jan. Nairobi Recovery from jetlag and orientation. Visit the nearby Giraffe Centre or check out the local markets. Day 3. Thu 31 st Jan. To Mt Kenya We set off early for the 4 5 hour drive to Mt. Kenya. The Sirimon route is one of the longest and gentlest on the mountain but also one of the most spectacular, as it passes through zones of dense forest, bamboo, giant heather and out onto high open moorland. Our first mountain hut, called Old Moses Hut lies at 3400m, a total ascent of 690m, which will take 3 4 hours. B.L.D. Day 4. Fri 1 st Feb. To Shipton s Camp Today s route takes us up the surreal Mackinder Valley with its strange vegetation of giant lobelia and groundsel, unique to equatorial African mountains. Our destination is known as Shipton s Camp but is actually another mountain hut, which at 4236m is just below the glaciers and jagged peaks of bare rock surrounding the main summits. Allow 6 hours tramping time with 836m of ascent. B.L.D. Day 5. Sat 2 nd Feb. Shipton s Camp We stay here for another night to have a rest day, which is invaluable for acclimatisation to make the summit day more enjoyable. There will be optional short walks on the summit circuit. B.L.D. Day 6. Sun 3 rd Feb. Point Lenana and Nithi River Camp
4 Today is summit day! The still but exhilarating scramble by starlight up to Point Lenana, the trekkers summit in time to see the dawn from a vantage point of almost 5000m. We leave at 3am and climb the 800m is 3 4 hours. The descent to Halls Tarns at 4300m drops 685m in around 2 hours and we will stop there for breakfast before continuing down descending another 3 hours to Nithi River Camp at 3300m. Camping in tents tonight. B.L.D. Day 7. Mon 4 th Feb. Return to Nairobi To complete the traverse of the mountain we descend by the Chogoria route with enjoyable walking and spectacular views of the chasms and waterfalls in the Gorges Valley. Continuing down through giant bamboo forest to meet out vehicles for the drive back to Nairobi, around 4 5 hours. Return to the guesthouse. B.L.D. Day 8. Tue 5 th Feb. A day off to enjoy the sights. Ready for some downtime? Perhaps check out the elephant orphanage and the national museum today. B. Day 9. Wed 6 th Feb. Amboseli National Park Travel south through vast savannah to Amboseli National Park, known for its wildlife viewing, rich birdlife and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Wildlife habitats range from open grassland plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush, swamps, marshland and ecosystems that are home to gazelle, elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, zebra, wildebeest and hippo among others. We arrive in time for lunch then set off for a game drive. Lodge accommodation. B.L.D. Day 10. Thu 7 th Feb. To Tanzania and the Maasai After a morning game drive we continue south to the border town of Namanga, the crossing point into Tanzania, then drive to a remote camp close to a Maasai village below Longido Mountain. A Maasai warrior will introduce us to the area and some of the plants, birdlife and customs of his people. Overnight in a guesthouse. B.L.D. Day 11. Fri 8 th Feb. Lake Manyara Guided by Maasai warriors through their land, we follow narrow paths through dense natural forest to reach the picturesque Dawa ya supu (medicine soup) viewpoint from which, on a clear day, one can see all the mountains found in northern Tanzania Mount Meru, Oldonyo Lengai and Kilimanjaro. We visit a Maasai homestead to learn more about their age-old cultural heritage before driving to our bandas accommodation by Lake Manyara. B.L.D. Day 12. Sat 9 th Feb. Ngorongoro Crater This collapsed volcano, sometimes called the eighth wonder of the world, forms a natural wildlife sanctuary and is a truly remarkable spectacle. On our game drive in the crater we have a high chance of seeing elephant, rhino, zebra, lion, gazelle, wildebeest and others. Later we drive, with a walk en-route, to nearby Empakaai Crater and set up camp on the crater rim at an altitude of 2700m. On a clear day, Lake Natron and Mount Kilimanjaro are clearly visible. Campsite tonight. B.L.D. Day 13. Sun 10 th Feb. Empakaai and return to Lake Manyara With a diameter of 6 kms, Empakaai is a much smaller crater than Ngorongoro, but is very beautiful. Together with local Maasai guides and a game ranger, we hike down into the crater floor and spend time inside the crater watching flamingoes on the lake and enjoying the tranquility of this rarely visited area. A steady climb back out of the crater is excellent acclimatisation for Kili and our vehicles await for the drive back via the Ngorongoro crater rim to our Lake Manyara bandas for a treat of a traditional African dinner. B.L.D. Day 14. Mon 11 th Feb. Village visit and Arusha An easier day now to relax and prepare for our Kilimanjaro climb. In the morning a village visit gives an opportunity to learn about the different economic activities undertaken by the local people including small-scale horticultural farms, banana plantations and Makonde wood carving workshops. Later we continue on to Kilimanjaro s main town of Arusha for a relaxed evening and a comfortable guesthouse overnight. B.L.D. The Kilimanjaro Section : Days The Kilimanjaro massif has three peaks : Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo. The summit of Kibo is Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa and our goal on this trek. Day 15. Tue 12 th Feb. Machame Camp (3000m)
5 We drive to the Machame Park gate, then climb gently up through the original montane forest, carpeted with busy lizzie flowers, begonias and ferns. First camp is amongst the giant heather. Ascent 1200m and 5 6 hours. B.L.D. Day 16. Wed 13 th Feb. Chira Cave (3840m) Emerging from the giant heather zone, we hike through fine open moorland to camp by Shira Cave. There are herds of eland up here (and occasionally lion!). Ascent 840m and 4 5 hours. B.L.D. Day 17. Thu 14 th Feb. Shira Cave acclimatise Most people will be starting to feel the altitude so we have added an acclimatization day here to rest or to explore the geological features of the old volcanic caldera near our camp and walk towards Shira Cathedral, surrounded by rocky spires and pinnacles. B.L.D. Day 18. Fri 15 th Feb. Barranco Valley (3950m) From Shira, we climb towards the main peak Kibo, with the western glaciers clearly visible across the rugged highaltitude desert of volcanic rocks. Skirting around its base and under the imposing Western Breach, we descend to the sheltered Barranco Valley for mid-way camp. 5 7 hours. Only 110m total ascent, but climbing high and dropping back down assists acclimatization. B.L.D. Day 19. Sat 16 th Feb. Karanga Valley (4060m) We head up the steep Barranco Wall with some sections of very easy scrambling and after a few ups and downs, drop down again to the Karanga Valley before a final climb leads to our next camp. We should arrive in camp in time for a late lunch, and can relax in the afternoon in preparation for the days ahead. Approx 4 hours. B.L.D. Day 20. Sun 17 th Feb. Barafu Camp (4600m) Up to our next camp at Barafu Hut (4600m) perched on a rocky spur with fantastic views across to Mawenzi Peak. This is another short walking day, about 4 hours, with less exertion and a good rest in the afternoon immediately before the hard summit day. B.L.D. Day 21. Mon 18 th Feb. Kilimanjaro (5896m), descend to Mweka Camp (3100m) A bracing midnight start to climb the steep frozen scree. This is unavoidable on any route but we aim to reach Stella Point (5700m) on the crater rim for sunrise another 40 minutes and you are at the highest point on the continent, usually in warm sunshine. We return on the Mweka descent route. Ascent 1300m and about 7 hours trek to the summit; 2800m descent and 5 6 hours trek to the Mweka camp. This is a long, hard, but rewarding day and you will feel absolutely ecstatic when you ve done it! B.L.D. Day 22. Tue 19 th Feb. Arusha A 3 hour descent through the forest to Mweka Gate to collect certificates and meet the vehicle before returning to Arusha for the evening and a celebration dinner! B. Day 23. Wed 20 th Feb. Zanzibar A relaxed start, then the flight from Arusha to Zanzibar and some serious R & R. Transfer to our guesthouse in a small village by the beach on the eastern shore Indian Ocean side. B. Day 24. Thu 21 st Feb and Day 25. Fri 22 nd Feb. Zanzibar Village and beach relaxing and meeting the locals. You may be interested in a tour of the spice farms that Zanzibar is so well known for. B. Day 26. Sat 23 rd Feb. Stonetown, Zanzibar Transfer to Stonetown on the west side of the island to explore the historic buildings and find out more about its spice and slave trade history. Hiring bikes is another great way to explore the island. B. Day 27. Sun 24 th Feb. Stonetown, Zanzibar Explore local markets, enjoy wonderful seafood. Perhaps a visit to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park to walk the trails and encounter a range of monkeys. B Day 28. Mon 25 th Feb. Depart
