3 GENERAL COURSE REPORT ADVENTURE COURSE CONDUCTED AT SANASAR INSTITUTE: VENUE: REPORT ON: JAWAHAR INSTITUTE OF MOUNTAINEERING & WINTER SPORTS (JIM & WS) PAHALGAM PAHALGAM ADVENTURE COURSE COURSE SERIAL NO: 63 DURATION OF COURSE: 05 JUL 2012 TO 19 JUL 2012 (15 DAYS) GENERAL 1. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM & WS) is a joint venture between Ministry of Defence, Government of India and Department of Tourism, Govt. of J&K. One of the premier mountaineering institutes in the country,its Headquarter is located at Nunwan, Pahalgam and sub centers at Bhaderwah (Doda), Sanasar (near Patnitop), Shey (Leh) and one adhoc sub centre at Gulmarg for skiing courses. Over the last 29 years, the Institute has excelled in various adventure activities like Mountaineering, Skiing, Paragliding, Rescue, Expeditions, Water Rafting, short term Special Adventure Courses and Mountain & Tourist Guide courses. INTRODUCTION students from various districts of Kashmir region sponsored by Directorate of Youth Services & Sports reported to JIM & WS, Pahalgam on 04 Jul 2012 to attend 15 days Mountaineering Adventure Course serial No. 63. The Scheduled training of these 49 students commenced on the next day morning. All the students completed the training successfully with desired level of standard. Nominal roll of Students is enclosed as Appendix A.
4 2 AIM 3. To expose the youth to nature, kindling the spirit of adventure, development of personality, character, courage and confidence through adventure activities and sports as well as to boost adventure tourism in J & K State. STANDARD TO BE ACHIEVED 4. The competence levels expected from students upon completion of the camps are as follows:- (a) (b) (c) (d) Empowered & well developed adolescents. National Integrity. Adventurous attitude. High Standard of youth activities & techniques. OBJECTIVES 5. (a) Promotion of adventure activities in the state. (b) Impart training on technical aspects of Mountaineering. (c) Hone Mountaineering skills of students (d) Create environment awareness amongst youth. (e) Character building.
5 OPENING ADDRESS 3 6. Opening address was given on the first day by Col Virinder Singh, Principal, JIM & WS. Students were introduced to well known history of the esteemed institute JIM & WS. They were explained about expectations from students, administration of the Institute and safety and security to be observed around Pahalgam. Students were told the duration of course, test and grading system as well as the phases of course going to be conducted in training area of the Institute. CONDUCT OF TRAINING OPENING ADDRESS BY COL VIRINDER SINGH, PRINCIPAL, JIM & WS 7. The students were trained in Acclimatization walk, Introduction to Mountaineering Equipment, Rope Knots, Rock Climbing, Rappelling and treks to different picturesque and historical places around the area, tent pitching, Tyrolean Traverse, River crossing and Jummaring. The students also got familiarized with Mountain Hazards, illness of Mountainous and high altitude area with its first aid and treatment. 8. Details of aspects covered during the training are enunciated in subsequent paras.
6 ACCLIMATIZATION 4 9. The location of the Institute at approx 7000 ft, though acclimatization was not mandatory, for acquiring physical fitness and mental robustness, initial period was utilized to achieve the same. Acclimatization marches of 1.5 to 3 kms around the places were conducted during first 2 days which was accompanied by mountain physical training. Students were made to run for long distance with 18 kg weight upto (7-8 kms) at one stretch to increase their endurance. At the end of this schedule students achieved the desired standards of fitness required to survive in hilly terrain. ACCLIMATIZATION WALK PHYSICAL EXERICSE TECHNICAL TRAINING 10. Keeping in consideration the geographical area of J&K state, training was provided in basic skills of rock craft administration in mountain terrain & introduction and use of mountaineering equipment in rescue missions/ operations at accidental sites and during natural calamities in mountainous terrain and Expeditions. At the culmination of this training, students could identify and narrate the uses of mountaineering equipment and its skillful application in mountainous area. Details of rock craft and other adventure activities conducted are as follows:
7 5 (a) ROCK CLIMBING & RAPPELLING The students were exposed to various types of rock surfaces for climbing and Rappelling techniques. They were explained the principles of climbing & rappelling, the safety measures to be followed and use of these techniques to cross high rock faces while going on long treks. ROCK CLIMBING RAPPELLING (b) RIVER CROSSING & TYROLEAN TRAVERSE Students were provided fundamental knowledge in the form of lecture cum demonstration on methods of negotiating fast flowing streams and nallas in mountainous areas and casualty evacuation followed by practicing it in groups. RIVER CROSSING TYROLEAN TRAVERSE
8 6 (c) TREKS Students were trained in High Altitude trekking. They got familiarized with the equipment needed while going on long treks. They were taken to historical places like Aru, Baisaran, Tulyan Lake & Betab Vally to see and exchange culture and beautiful places around the area, enroute they met and conversed with the villagers and children, interacting and exchanging culture, thoughts, life style which helped them to know the locals better. TREK TO ARU TREK TO BAISARAN (d) TENT PITCHING Students were demonstrated the methods of tent pitching and use of survival camps in the jungles and mountainous terrain while on missions in adverse natural / manmade calamities. 9 7 (e) Lectures The following aspects of adventure activities and related subjects were covered in great details in the form of lecture and demonstration. 10 (f) ENDURANCE RUN 8 Team practiced running for long distance with backpack load of 18 kgs which helped them to attain the desired standard of physical endurance required during rescue operations. Students showed marked improvement in endurance and they excelled in the final endurance run of 8.5 kms taken by the Institute. Shahzad Ahmad Malik of Govt. Higher Secondary School Shopian secured the award of first position. (f) GAMES ENDURANCE RUN SHRI JAIPAL SINGH, KAS, DIRECTOR, DYSS PRESENTING ENDURANCE AWARD TO SHAHZAD AHMAD MALIK Students were made to take interest to participate in games like volley ball, badminton, cricket. Through discussions with the instructors they also got familiarized with adventure sports like skiing, paragliding, water rafting and Para jumping. Students showed keen desire to undergo training at the institute for the adventure sports in near future. Movies on adventure sports like skiing & para Jumping were run in the auditorium for the students. ENJOYING GAMES
11 9 VISIT BY MS SAKEENA ITOO, HON,BLE MINISTER FOR SOCIAL WELFARE-J&K 11. Ms Sakeena Itoo, Hon ble Minister for Social Welfare, Jammu & Kashmir visited Pahalgam on 09 Jul 2012, along with district administration and she visited JIM & WS, Pahalgam. At present students from various districts of Kashmir region were undergoing training sponsored by Directorate of Youth Services & Sports J&K. She met with all the students, praised them and shared few words with them. She also visited the training site of the Institute during river crossing and spent her precious time with the students at training site. She was presented a memento and a cap on behalf of Principal and all staff of the Institute to the Hon,ble Minister. HON,BLE MINISTERS S INTRODUCTION WITH THE STUDENTS GROUP PHOTOGRAPH WITH STUSENTS ADMINISTRATION 12. One dedicated officer in charge of the institute with well experienced and trained instructors and other kitchen staff were provided by the institute who accompanied and looked after the students round the clock.
12 10 ACCOMMODATION 13. The accommodation facility was made in Institute Hostel with good lodging facilities and cleanliness. FOOD 14. The students were provided with hygienic and palatable food during the training period with additional energy supplements like fruits, dry fruits and chocolates, juices etc.. ENJOYING SUMPTUOUS FOOD ENJOYING PACK LUNCH DURING TREK TO TULYAN EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING 15. Keeping in view the harsh conditions and cold and rainy weather during the course, the students were provided with quality equipment and clothing gear for training purpose. EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING ISSUED BY JIM & WS
13 11 MEDICAL COVER 16. Dedicated medical officer and Nursing Assistant of the institute provided medical support to the participants through out the course duration. Different first aid kits were prepared for trek, rock area and traveling, the students were educated about the mountain hazards, illnesses of the mountainous and high altitude area with its treatment modalities. Different techniques of casualty evacuation in relation to rescue from accidental sites and difficult mountain terrain were demonstrated to and practiced by the students. ASSESSMENT 17. The students were assessed of their performance in the course in the form of Rock craft (oral & practical) taken by the instructors of the institute. The students excelled in the test taken by securing good marks. Fida Hussain Wani of Govt. Boys Higher Secondary Budgam secured the best in technique award while Mudasir Bashir Lone of Govt Higher Secondary for boys Kulgam secured the best student Award of the courses. 14 12 GRADUATION CEREMONY 18. The students presented a colourful cultural programme after completion of scheduled training. Beautiful events like singing, dancing and mimicry were presented by the participants. Shri Jaipal Singh, KAS, Director, Youth Services & Sports-J&K (DYSS) was invited as Chief Guest, Mrs Neelofar Akhter, Dy Director, DYSS, Srinagar, Addl Dy Commissioner, Anantnag, Tehsildar Pahalgam and Mrs Hafeeza Akhter, Assistant Director, DYSS as Guest of honor for the ceremony who praised the students for their excellent performance. The event was followed by the distribution of the course batches, mementoes, prizes & Certificates to all the participants by the dignitaries. The event was concluded with vote of thanks by Col Virinder Singh, Principal, JIM & WS to all the dignitaries and students. 15 13 OBSERVATION 19. (a) The participants showed marked interest in learning and adopting the skills of adventure. (b) The participants improved a lot in their physical as well as mental capabilities. (c) The participants showed keen interest in participating in other courses at JIM & WS. RECOMMENDATIONS 20. (a) It is recommended that more groups may be sponsored by Director, Youth Services & Sports-J&K to JIM & WS for Basic, Advance Mountaineering course and Method of instructions courses as well as other adventure courses like Paragliding, White water rafting & Skiing. (b) Youth Services & Sports and JIM & WS should form a strong bond to promote adventure in Jammu & Kashmir state and successfully conquer higher peaks in India and abroad in the coming future by launching Joint Expeditions to pursue the good cause of promoting adventure in Indian youth. (c) Efforts may be done by the Director, Youth Services & Sports- J&K to secure some percentage of vacancies in all the adventure courses viz, Mountaineering, Skiing and Adventure courses. FEEDBACK 21. The Photocopies of some of the feedbacks received from the students are enclosed as Appendix C, reflecting the goal achieved as per the opinion of students.
16 14 CONCLUSION 22. During the adventure course the training was imparted to make the participants confident of living in Mountainous terrain and to become technically proficient as trained Mountaineers/ trekker. It helped the participants in personality development and character building. The participants were also made aware of the environmental changes and its adverse effects in future. The performance of the adventure camp validates the fact that desired standards of exposure and training in adventure and in promoting tourism in the state were achieved.
