STOK KANGRI (6135 MTRS), FOR INDIAN AIR FORCE (IAF) & PRIVATE STUDENTS INSTITUTE: VENUE: REPORT ON: JAWAHAR INSTITUTE OF MOUNTAINEERING & WINTER SPORTS (JIM & WS) PAHALGAM PAHALGAM ADVANCE MOUNTAINEERING COURSE AND EXPEDITION TO MT. STOK KANGRI (6135 MTRS) COURSE SERIAL NO: AMC- 30 DURATION OF COURSE: 01 SEPT 2011 to 26 SEPT 2011 (26 Days) GENERAL 1. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports (JIM & WS) is a joint venture between Ministry of Defence, Government of India and Department of Tourism Govt. of J&K. Headquarter of the Institute is located at Nunwan, Pahalgam and sub centers at Bhaderwah (Doda), Sanasar (near Patnitop), Shey (Leh) and one adhoc sub centre at Gulmarg for skiing courses. Over last 29 years the Institute has excelled in different adventure activities like Mountaineering, Skiing, Paragliding, Rescue, water rafting, short term adhoc adventure courses and Mountain & Tourist Guide courses. INTRODUCTION Indian Air Force Personnel and 18 private students from different parts of the country reported to JIM & WS, Pahalgam on 31 Aug 11 evening. Scheduled training of these 34 students started w.e.f 01 Sep 11 morning. All of them completed the training with desired level of standard. Nominal roll of students with grading is enclosed as Appendix A. REPORTING AT JIM & WS

4 2 AIM 3. (a) To impart theoretical and practical training on all aspects of Mountainous terrain and High Altitude including advance techniques of rock and ice craft to students. (b) To train the students to survive in mountains / survival camps and to take part in expeditions in mountainous terrain of India & abroad. (c) To plan, execute and climb a 6000 mtrs peak to experience the difficulties faced during an Expedition. STANDARDS TO BE ACHIEVED 4. The competence levels expected from students upon completion of the course are as follows:- (a) Students should be able to effectively utilize technical skills during expeditions in all kinds of ranges in India and abroad. (b) Students should be able to effectively form part of team as an active member and lead climber during missions and Expeditions in high altitude area. OBJECTIVES 5. (a) Carryout rescue mission in any eventuality in mountains, at accidental sites and during natural calamities and carryout Expeditions in all kinds of ranges in India and abroad. (b) Impart advance training on technical aspects of mountaineering. (c) Hone mountaineering skills of students. (d) Create environment awareness amongst the youth. (e) Promote adventure activities in the state.

5 OPENING ADDRESS 3 6. Joint opening address was given on the first day by Major Rahul Mahajan, Medical officer, JIM & WS to Advance Mountaineering Course Serial No. 30 and Basic Mountaineering Course Serial No.91. Students were introduced to well known history of the esteemed institute JIM & WS. They were explained about expectations from students, administration of the Institute and safety and security to be observed around Pahalgam. Students were told the duration of course, test and grading system as well as the phases of course going to be conducted in training area of the Institute. CONDUCT OF TRAINING OPENING ADDRESS BY MAJOR RAHUL MAHAJAN, MEDICAL OFFICER, JIM & WS 7. The students were trained in Acclimatization walk, Endurance run, Introduction to mountaineering equipment, Rope knots, rock climbing, Rappelling, Treks to different picturesque and historical places around the area, Tent pitching, Tyrolean traverse, River crossing, Ice craft, Crevasse rescue, casualty evacuation, Rope fixing, base making and taking part in Expedition to 6000 mtrs peak. ACCLIMATIZATION AROUND PAHALGAM

6 4 8. Training for the students started with advance techniques of rock craft for initial one week at Pahalgam followed by move to Leh (Ladakh) where one more week of rock craft training was provided. This was followed by Ice craft training for which the team moved to Stok Kangri Glacier, on the culmination of which the team Summitted Mt. Stok Kangri (6135 mtrs) as a routine part of Advance Mountaineering Course to climb a 6000 mtrs peak. A copy of training programme is enclosed as Appendix B. PHYSICAL EXERCISE 9. The location of the Institute at approx 7000 ft, though acclimatization was not mandatory, for acquiring physical fitness and mental robustness, initial period was utilized to achieve the same. Acclimatization marches of 1.5 to 3 kms around the places were conducted during first 2 days which was accompanied by mountain physical training. Students were made to run for long distance (7-8kms) at one stretch to increase their endurance. At the end of this schedule students achieved the desired standards of fitness required to survive in hilly terrain. TECHNICAL TRAINING MORNING MOUNTAIN PT 10. Training was provided in advance skills of rock craft administration in mountain terrain & introduction and use of mountaineering equipment. At the culmination of this training, students could identify and narrate the uses of mountaineering equipment and its skillful application in mountainous area. Details of rock craft and other adventure activities conducted are as follows:

7 5 (a) ROCK CRAFT 48 periods were allotted to impart instructions in advance skills of mountaineering including pitch climbing, fixed rope climbing and rappelling. The students were exposed to various types of rock surfaces around Pahalgam and at Shey (Leh). (b) ICE CRAFT ARTIFICIAL ROCK CLIMBING ROCK CLIMBING 60 periods were allotted to impart instructions in advance skills of ice craft including base making, Cramponing, crevasse crossing and rescue, rope fixing ice wall climbing, in Glaciated terrains. The students were taken to Stok Kangri glacier (15500ft) situated 17 kms from Shey (Leh) for this part of the course. 4 POINT CLIMB ON ICE WALL 2 POINT PRACTICE AT GLACIER

8 6 (c) RIVER CROSSING & TYROLEAN TRAVERSE Students were provided fundamental knowledge in the form of lecture cum demonstration on methods of negotiating fast flowing rivers and nallas in mountainous areas and Tyrolean traverse followed by practicing it in groups. TYROLEAN TRAVERSE RIVER CROSSING (d) HIGH ALTITUDE TREK Students were trained in tough high altitude trekking. They got familiarized with the equipment needed while going on high altitude treks. They carried backpack of 23 kgs each containing all the necessary equipment and clothing gear required to setup survival camp in high altitude area. TREK TO STOK VILLAGE

9 7 (e) LECTURE / PRESENTATIONS The following aspects of adventure activities and related subjects were covered in great details in the form of lecture cum Power point presentations and movies concerning mountaineering as mentioned below: (i) Mountain Terminology (ii) Casualty evacuation (iii) Load packing and carrying in mountains and snow bound area (iv) Mountain Hazards (v) Mountain Survival (vi) Map Reading (vii) Use of Compass (viii) Use of GPS (ix) Planning and conduct of an Expedition (x) High altitude illnesses and cold injuries (xi) Avalanche rescue MOUNTAIN TERMINOLOGY LOAD PACKING & CARRYING MOUNTAIN HAZARDS \ HIGH ALTITUDE ILLNESS AND COLD INJURIES BY MAJOR RAHUL MAHAJAN, MED OFFICER, JIM

10 (f) ENDURANCE RUN 8 Team practiced running for long distance with backpack load of kgs which helped them to attain the desired standard of physical endurance required during rescue operations. Students showed marked improvement in endurance and they excelled in the final endurance run of 8.5 kms taken by the institute a private student Shri Gh Mohd Wani from Tangmarg J&K, secured the first position. EXPEDITION PLANNING ENDURANCE RUN 11. Couple of lectures were delivered to the students by Col Virinder Singh, Principal JIM & WS and experienced senior Instructors on the subject of planning an expedition. They learned formation of support team & climbing team, selection criteria of members taking in account the physical capabilities, endurance, spirit of team work, high morale and positive attitude. Students also learned to cater for equipment and administrative requirements while proceeding on an expedition. Their capability to plan an expedition was assessed by giving them the responsibility to plan an expedition to Mt Stok Kangri (6135 mtrs). They completed the task given within given timeframe with excellent planning and administrative strategy. EXPEDITION PLANNING BY OL VIRINDER SINGH, PRINCIPAL, JIM & WS

11 EVENTS VISIT OF HON,BLE MINISTERS: As per the instructions from Ministry of youth affairs & sports, New Delhi, JIM & WS conducted adventure course (10 days) for 91 NYK volunteers from different districts of J&K at Sub centre Shey (Leh). The said course was sponsored by Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports under its Rajiv Gandhi Adventure Scheme. Inauguration and flag off ceremony of the adventure course as well as JIM & WS Advance Mountaineering Course and Expedition to Mt. Stok Kangri was facilitated on 12 Sept 2011 with the hands of Shri Ajay Maken, Hon,ble Union Minister, MYAS, Govt of India and Shri R S Chib, Hon,ble Minister, Youth Service & Sports and Medical and Technical Education, Govt of J&K. FLAGGING OFF OF EXPEDITION TO MT. STOK KANGRI (6135 MTRS) 13. The advance Mountaineering Course Expedition to Mt. Stok Kangri and NYK Adventure course were flagged off by both the Ministers and the blessed the participants of both the courses for their successful accomplishment of the task. Hon ble Minster for MYAS Shri Ajay Maken praised the participants and JIM & WS staff for their extra ordinary efforts to conduct the said courses at Leh even without having permanent resources at the place, he promised the authority of JIM & WS to raise and sustain new adventure activities by extending a helping hand from the ministry. He also agreed upon giving an hour for audience to the authority of JIM & WS on special request made by Major Rahul Mahajan, Medical Officer, JIM & WS. GROUP PHOTOGRAPH MT. 12 10 Hon,ble Minister YS&S, Medical and tech Education J&K Shri R S Chib in his speech also praised the efforts of JIM & WS to promote adventure tourism in the state by conducting various adventure activities in all regions of the state. He in his speech promised the JIM & WS authority to provide assistance in regard of funds and even the land cases especially one at Shey (Leh) to get it transferred to the Institute to setup the sub centre at the earliest. FLAGGING OFF OF EXPEDITION TO MT. STOK KANGRI (6135 MTRS) BY SHRI AJAY MAKEN HON,BLE UNION MINISTER, MYAS, GOI CONDUCT OF EXPEDITION 14. (a) Expedition was flagged off from Shey (Leh) on 12 Sept 2011 by Shri Ajay Maken, Hon,ble Union Minister, MYAS, Govt of India and Shri R S Chib, Hon,ble Minister, Youth Service & Sports and Medical and Technical Education, Govt of J&K. (b) After having trained at Shey (Leh) in rock craft for next two days, the team moved to Stok Glacier on 15 Sept 2011 for further mandatory ice craft training and acclimatization.

13 11 BASE CAMP 15. Team reached Base Camp of stok kangri (15500 ft) on 16 Sept 2011 after 6-7 hrs of approach march from the road head stok village. Stocking of Base Camp was completed with the help of team members. The team carried out acclimatization for next 03 days in the form of treks to glacier and nearby picturesque places carrying out ice craft training. Two groups composed of experienced climbers recced the Northern and southern glaciers of the peak and submitted the report on 19 Sept 2011.The lead team consisting of experienced and well trained climbers started from Base Camp on 20 Sep 11 at 0600 hours for attempting for summit. 14 12 SUMMIT 16. On 20 Sep 2011 the first team along with lead party left the base camp at 0600 hours the complete team summitted at 0945 hours. Bright sunny day view around the summit was very clear and beautiful and this was for the first time that most of the members of the team scaled the peak. After offering prayer to the God on the summit photographs were taken. The team started descending down at around 1230 hours and reached Base Camp at 1530 hours. The list of Summiteers is attached as Appendix D. SUMMITEER ATOP MT. STOK KANGRI(6135M) DE-INDUCTION 17. After successful Summit the whole team returned to road head on 21 Sept After holding flag Inn ceremony on 22 Sep 2011 the team moved back to Pahalgam on 23 Sep The movement plan for the conduct of Expedition is attached as Appendix E.

17 ACCOMMODATION The accommodation facility at Pahalgam was made in Institute Hostel building and during Ice craft training and Expedition in Tents at Leh. The accommodation facility provided was sufficient to comfortably survive in the cold climate of Pahalgam and Leh (Ladakh). FOOD INSTITUTE PAHALGAM CAMP AT LEH 19. The students were provided with hygienic and palatable food during the training period with additional energy supplements like fruits, dry fruits and chocolates, juices etc EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING 20. Keeping in view the harsh training conditions during the course, the students were provided with quality equipment and clothing gear for training purpose and Expedition.

18 EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING PROVIDED BY JIM & WS MEDICAL COVER Dedicated medical officer and nursing assistant of the institute provided medical support to the participants through out the course duration. Different first aid kits were prepared for trek, rock area and traveling, the students were educated about the mountain hazards, illnesses of the mountainous and high altitude area with its treatment modalities. The medical assistant accompanied the course even during glacier training and took care of their minor and major ailments. MEDICAL OFFICER EXAMINING THE STUDENTS ASSESSMENT 22. The students were assessed of their performance in the course in the form of Rock craft and Ice craft (written, Practical & oral) taken by the Instructors of the institute. The students excelled in the test taken by securing good marks and grading. No F-N, CPL Pankaj Rawat (2301 Flt C/O 18 Wg) Secures the best student Award of the course, while Lakshman Singh a private student secured best in Technique Award of the course. They were also assessed with their performance as an active member of expedition to Mt. Stok Kangri (6135). The marks sheet is attached as Appendix F.

19 WRITTEN TEST ICE CRAFT TEST 17 OBSERVATIONS 23. (a) The students showed marked interest in learning and adopting the skills of Mountaineering & expedition planning. (b) The students improved a lot in their physical as well as mental capabilities. (c) The students excelled in the final test taken by the institute to assess their performance. (d) The students showed keen interest in to be trained in adventure sports at JIM & WS. (e) The students took keen interest in planning and executing the expedition to Mt. Stok Kangri (6135 mtrs) successfully summiting the peak. RECOMMENDATIONS 24. (a) It is recommended that more courses may be sent to JIM & WS for Basic, Advance Mountaineering course and Method of instructions courses as well as other adventure courses like Paragliding, White water rafting & Skiing. (b) The Air Force and JIM & WS should form a strong bond to successfully conquer higher peaks in India and abroad in the coming future to pursue the good cause of promoting adventure in Indian youth. (c) It is proposed that IAF warriors may be sent to JIM & WS for more Expedition in the coming future. FEEDBACK 25. The Photocopies of some of the feedbacks received from the students are enclosed as Appendix G, reflecting the goal achieved as per the opinion of students.

20 18 GRADUATION CEREMONY AND FLAG INN 26. The team of advance Mountaineering Course was received at Shey (Leh) by Col Virinder Singh, Principal, JIM & WS after the successful attempt during Expedition to Mt. Stok Kangri (6135 mtrs). He flagged inn the Expedition by welcoming and felicitating all the successful participants and summiteers. The team was distributed with complimentary prizes and souvenirs for their excellent performance during expedition to Mt. Stok Kangri. COL VIRINDER SINGH, PRINCIPAL, JIM & WS AT FLAG INN CEREMONY 27. After reaching back to Pahalgam on 24 Sept 2011, the students presented a colourful cultural programme after completion of scheduled training. Beautiful events like singing, dancing, mimicry were presented by the participants. Col Virinder Singh, Principal, JIM & WS praised the students for their excellent performance. 21 19 CONCLUSION 28. During advance mountaineering course training was imparted to make the participants confident of living in mountainous terrain and to be technically proficient as trained mountaineers. Special efforts were delivered to practice forming teams in expedition planning. In their debut performance the advance course team comprising of 16 Indian Air Force Warriors and 17 private students successfully summitted Mt. Stok Kangri (6135 mtrs) in Ladakh Himalaya. The performance of the participants validates the fact that desired standards of exposure and training in advance mountain techniques were achieved.
