PAGE 2 Introduction This family adventure holiday to Nepal is designed to immerse you and your family in this stunning country with its beautiful, humble and generous people. Each day is full of adventure, starting with exploring some cultural in Kathmandu visiting the famous Pashupatinath Hindu Temple and Buddhist Stupa of Boudhanath. We see the mighty Himalayan Mountains of the Annapurnas from Pokhara. Situated on the picturesque Phewa Lake shores, Pokhara, gives us an opportunity to enjoy a boat ride, cycle along rural country tracks and do an easy rafting overnight trip on the Seti River. Our adventure in Nepal continues in Chitwan National Park were we look for rhino and tigers, and do some canoeing, watching for water birds and skulking crocs. Leaving Chitwan we have a couple of nights in a peaceful hotel in the hills around Kurintar to enjoy a walk to a local Chepang community and an exhilarating cable car ride to the Manakamana Temple. Returning to Kathmandu we have time for a local cooking session and some all-important souvenir shopping. This family holiday is a true cultural submersion into this awesome country, one which is classically known for its trekking.there is no trekking and just the 1 night camping (all kit included) in this itinerary and we believe we are show casing the some of the best of the country in this two-week itinerary for you and your family. Is this holiday for you? Suitable for children aged 6yrs + This itinerary is designed for all families to enjoy the beautiful country of Nepal. There is no worrying altitude involved (nothing above 1600m). We need to have a sense of fun, adventure and open mind to enjoy the country and the holiday. There are some long drives, the longest from Kathmandu to Pokhara which is usually approximately 6 hours. Our overnight rafting adventure is pitched at beginners, but it is essential that everyone who participates can swim unaided for 25m. There are no height or age restrictions for the rafting. We have 1 night camping on the beach by the river. All equipment is provided including sleeping bags. We have a few half-day walks, some which involve walking uphill for 30mins to an hour on maintained paths or man-made surfaces. Cycling is optional but if you want to join in then the routes are away from the main roads. All bikes and cycle helmets are provided. Our hotel accommodation has swimming pools where possible and gardens for everyone to relax in away from the bustle of Nepali life. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu. Watch the sunset at Swayambhunath and enjoy a traditional dinner. Meet at the group hotel in Kathmandu. Transfers from Kathmandu Airport are provided for all flights today. Depending on arrival times you will be able to have a swim in the hotel pool, a rest and freshen up. We meet our guide and drive to the Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple). This is one of the oldest stupas in Nepal and is now an important centre for Buddhism plus a fantastic place for your little monkeys to photograph the many cheeky monkeys that call it home! Located on a small hillock it gives us great views of our first Nepali sunset over the Kathmandu Valley. Adorned with prayer flags and painted gold it is beautiful and peaceful. We then have dinner at a traditional local restaurant where they serve classic Nepali food. The renovated building, once the residence of the caste of royal priests, is beautiful, and during dinner we are entertained by smiling dancers in their traditional finery. It's a great start and introduction to our holiday in Nepal. MEALS D
PAGE 3 Day 2: Morning Hinduism and Buddhism tour of Kathmandu. Afternoon free. This morning we learn about the two main religions of Nepal: Hinduism and Buddhism. We visit the two most important heritage sites of Kathmandu, the Pashupatinath Temple, which is famous amongst Hindus and the Boudhanath stupa, famous amongst Buddhists. Boudhanath is incredibly beautiful and a bustling place for local families who come to visit the biggest Buddhist stupa in the world. It is a very interesting morning (even the children will enjoy it) and gives us a deeper understanding about the people of Nepal. This afternoon we have a briefing about the trip ahead of us, as well as some free time when we can relax in the peaceful gardens of our hotel or visit Thamel with its colourful shops and excellent bakeries. This is a relaxed day, just what we need after the journey here. Day 3: Transfer from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Afternoon free exploring. We leave Kathmandu today by boarding our early morning flight to the activity capital of Nepal - the fun city of Pokhara. Located on the shores of the picturesque Lake Phewa and surrounded by the dramatic backdrop of the Annapurnas, Pokhara has a lot going for it. Our hotel is well located and has a swimming pool that we can use if the weather if not too cool! We have the afternoon free to explore Pokhara on our own. There are many cafés serving juices and smoothies, and we can walk along the shores of the lake soaking in the atmosphere watching the people in their colourful boats. We can sample some of the local sweet treats, such as Jalebi: pancake batter shaped like a large pretzel, soaked in batter and deep-fried the children will love it and after-all you are on holiday! As in Kathmandu, we need to watch out for the sacred cows which peacefully roam the streets - an interesting sight for parents and children alike! We can visit the old bazaar which is a colourful gathering of ethnically diverse traders, selling spices, crafts and everyday items. This interesting place feels like real Nepalese life, far away from the tourist crowds of the lake shores. We return to the hotel for dinner. Day 4: Boat across Phewa Lake, walk to the World Peace Stupa. We start on the water this morning, which will please most children, as we take a boat ride across the lake to the pretty forested slopes on the other side. We then walk for about 1 hr uphill along a well-marked path through the trees, to the World Peace Pagoda or Stupa. It is painted brilliant white and sits overlooking the snow-capped Annapurna Mountain Range which reflects in the lake below - it's very magnificent and peaceful. We will learn a lot from our guide about the peace stupas and their significance. There are some cafés at the top and we can have a coffee or a soft drink before eating our lunch. The descent back to the boats is quick, especially for children who have a tendency to run a lot. If we have time we will stop on the island in the lake to visit the little Barahi Temple. We return to Pokhara and then we have the rest of the afternoon free for a swim before dinner. Day 5: Free day in Pokhara. Optional sunrise trip, cycling tour or Tibetan Refugee Camp. We have a full free day in Pokhara for you to choose your own activities. For something really special we could arrange a pre-dawn trip to Sarangkot to see the magnificent sunrise over the snowy peaks of Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail), Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. After breakfast we can visit the Devil's waterfalls and the sacred Gupteswar
PAGE 4 Gupha caves with its underground passages and rooms, or we can visit the Tibetan Refugee Camp where they sell lots of trinkets. The International Mountain Museum is also of interest and from its location we can actually see three, 8000m peaks; Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu. A great activity for all the family, and one we recommend is a cycling trip of the area. We can arrange a trip for you with a guide, quality bikes, spares support and a picnic lunch. You cycle along the quite roads outside Pokhara and the lake shore. It is a special day, and lovely way to get some exercise and possibly tire out energetic children! Whatever you decide to do our guide will help make arrangements and we'll have a super day. Day 6: Overnight rafting adventure on the Seti River. Today we set off on a real adventure for all the family, with rafting and an overnight on a sandy river beach. It is suitable for all the family (I - II grade white-water) and sure to put smiles on everyone's face. We repack our main bags so that we just take some overnight clothes with us (sleeping bags and all camping equipment provided), and after a transfer to the river at Damauli Bridge (1-2hrs), we spend some time with our specialist guides getting geared up and having safety briefings - and then we are off navigating down the river over the rapids and channels. The river runs slowly and we quietly paddle past rural villages, terraced slopes and forest. We stop for our picnic lunch on the beach before continuing on. The white water is exciting and gets the adrenalin going. This day is suitable for beginner rafters who will find it very enjoyable. We arrive at the beautiful beach in the mid afternoon, unpack our rafts and enjoy a hot chocolate and snack. We have some time to sort our things out and relax before our rafting team cooks dinner. If conditions allow we have a campfire and tell stories under the stars. We tuck up into our sleeping bags and fall asleep with the sound of the river nearby. CAMPING Day 7: Chitwan National Park. We have a relaxed breakfast on the beach before we pack up our rafts and set off again. We continue along the river with some more rapids, of II class and maybe the odd III class rapid, depending on the river levels (2-3hrs rafting). We arrive at our take out point and have lunch. Here we say goodbye to the rafts and the team and climb on board our vehicle and drive the now, short distance of maybe 1 hour to Chitwan National Park. This park will be one of the highlights of our family holiday in Nepal. The scenery is interesting, and we get a good impression of rural Nepali life as we travel. Nepal's first National Park, Chitwan, is a special place because it is one of the last areas of 'Terai' subtropical lowland ecosystems. There is an array of wildlife and birds, and if we are lucky we'll see the famous rhino and one of the few remaining Bengal tigers. Our hotel is located just at the park gates and is a great spot with gardens and a roof terrace overlooking the park. HOTEL Day 8: Chitwan National Park - Jungle Day; Tharu village walks and canoeing. Today we venture out to look for the one-horned rhino and tiger. Also in the park we might see leopard and numerous different bird species. It is a beautiful place. We have a jeep tour into the park to see the wildlife, a jungle walk with our of the park specialist guides and depending on water levels we can canoe along the Rapti River. These are tradition wooden dug-out canoes which are paddled for us by experts. Floating along the river is a lovely way to see the area, soak up the atmosphere, and see many of the water birds and skulking crocs!
PAGE 5 HOTEL Day 9: Morning in Chitwan. Drive to Kurintar, walk to hotel through Chepang Village. After breakfast we will visit a model Tharu village where there is a museum of Tharu culture and where we can see traditional handicrafts being made. We may also have a chance see where they make the poopoo paper from the elephant dung! We then transfer to Kurintar about 3 hrs away. At the road head we have to walk for 20 mins (our baggage is taken for us) though a village and over a suspension bridge to our next hotel - which is a real gem in Nepal. Located in the tree clad hills above the mighty Trisuli River we can watch the scenery from the beautiful gardens or the terrace sipping a cool drink. There is a swimming pool for the children to expend some energy in and the accommodation is in individual bungalows. This is the perfect setting to have some downtime during the holiday. We have 2 nights here, so can even do some of that laundry if the children have got all the clothes dirty by this stage! We have a delicious meal in the restaurant which prides itself on using locally sourced organic produce. Day 10: Morning walk to the waterfalls. Cable car ride to the Manakamana Temple. A relaxed start to the day after many busy days is what we need, and have! We then walk directly from the hotel to explore the surroundings. In the hills we will see Chepang and Magar villages. These indigenous communities are interesting as they can have a different language and strong cultural traditions. We carry along through a small gorge to crystal clear pools of a pretty waterfall. This afternoon we can go to see the Manakamana Temple which is now easy to access with its new cable car imported from Austria!. It's a steep 15 min journey in the cable car, with outstanding views, to the top. We spend some time looking around the temple with its colourful adornments and attractive painted wooden structures. We return down with the cable car and return to our hotel for the evening and to relax. Day 11: Return to Kathmandu. No rush again this morning, and we can enjoy this special place with some reading in the gardens, or a walk before returning over the suspension bridge to the road head and our waiting vehicle. Our final journey back to Kathmandu takes approximately 3 hours. We are now familiar with our surroundings and after our experiences it will seem like an age since we left our hotel in Kathmandu at the beginning of the holiday. Day 12: Cook like a local, explore Kathmandu. This morning our specialist guide takes us to the bazaar in Kathmandu to source some fresh ingredients for our cooking class. After this colourful excitement we set about learning to cook a classic Nepali dish such as Momo, Dal Bhat or Allo Paratha. Delicious! Which is exactly what we say when we eat it for lunch. This afternoon we have free time. We can explore the Thamel district with its endless streets selling millions of souvenirs that you can take home for friends and families. Maybe some pray flags, a singing bowl, wooden masks, a beautiful Thangka painting or some woollen knitted gloves, hats or blankets - to mention just a few items, essentially there is plenty to choose
PAGE 6 from. This evening we have a celebratory dinner with our fellow travellers to mark the last night of our fabulous adventure in Nepal. Day 13: Departure Day. The Nepalese love momos which are a type of dumpling often filled with meat or vegetables and again full of flavour, and they are delicious too! Samosas are also popular and can be found in many shapes, flavours and freshly cooked. Also, Nepal is a nation full of sweet-treat lovers. You will see many bakeries selling lots of little bite size chocolate or lemon cakes. A favour is pancakes with lemon and sugar always a hit with the children as well. Nimki are fried puff pastry Nepali rice crackers, and great as a little sweet snack.
PAGE 7 It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. Tips do not form part of the wages of your guides, porters and trek crew but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. As a guide, we recommend the contribution to these tips is (in rupees) per family member. This should be split proportionally between your tour leader, driver and the local specialist guides. Beat The Jet Lag Our holidays are normally designed with minimal 'down time' at the start of the trip, but having a day or two at the beginning will have the additional benefit of allowing you time to get over the stress of a long journey or travelling across time zones, leaving you refreshed and ready for your holiday. At the timings of this holiday you will encounter daytime highs of around 25ºC (a few degrees higher in early October and late April trips). At night temperatures will drop and evenings can be chilly, especially from December to February. For the rhododendron blooms, March to early May is the best time.
