1 August 1, 2014 From: Robin Hamelin, Battalion Chief Re: 2014 Pebble Beach Fire Defense Plan - Goat Fuel Reduction Program The PBCSD Fire Department has contracted with Goats R Us for approximately 300 goats for fuel reduction projects in various areas of the Forest. The goats will be in the Forest for approximately six weeks, beginning Monday, August 4th. The herd of goats (250) will initially begin work just inside the SFB Morse Gate, then head through the Del Monte triangle and then to the Sloat/Majella green belt. They will then move to the area below the homes in upper Carmel Woods above Ford Meadow and Pescadero Canyon. The masticator has prepared numerous blocks in which the herder can easily place his fencing which will allow a higher production rate for the herd. Upon completion of this area, the herd will be walked across 17 Mile Drive for work in greenbelts below Sunset Lane and Sunridge Drive and portions of the interior of that area. The herder, Zeno Rodriguez, speaks English and Spanish. He is housed in a travel trailer which is periodically moved by PB Co to facilitate the movement of the herd. The Company supplies him with drinking water, fuel, porta potty and a water trailer for the herd. FPP staff will notify Shawn Casey in advance to have the trailer and water tank moved. Attached are contact lists (the Spanish portion is for Zeno). Staff will walk all of the project areas with him so he understands the locations and requirements of each area. FPP staff and Shawn Casey will be working with Zeno regularly. Zeno will have this plan and his primary contacts are Jose Sosa, Shawn and Fire Protection and Planning staff. Goats R Us will provide food and other supplies for the herder, who is not allowed to leave the herd. If you have any program questions, please contact FPP personnel or Shawn.
