PAGE 2 Introduction This relatively leisurely-paced cycling holiday in southern South Africa is focused on Cape Town and the Western Cape Province. This part of South Africa is recognised to be amongst the most spectacularly beautiful corners of the planet and this 2-week tour will allow you to make the most of it. We start out in the Winelands around Stellenbosch, where we have the chance to sample some of the local produce, before setting off on our bespoke circuit ride. Generally following backroads, our loop takes us across well-known passes such as Baines Kloof, Rooihoogte and Tradouws. Mostly constructed in the 19th century, these were originally dirt roads which now present low angle climbs on good quality tarmac. Throughout the ride we will experience an ever-changing tapestry of fertile farmland, rugged valleys and gorges, the semi-arid scrubland of the Karoo, then a mix of dramatic coastal scenery as we journey from Hermanus to the Cape Peninsula. On our final ride, we follow the second part of the famous, annual Cape Argus route along the Atlantic shore to Cape Town. There are 8 days of cycling with an average of around 5 hours in the saddle on each of these days and we have broken the trip up with a free day in Hermanus (whale watching options) and finish off with a second free day in Cape Town, with the option to take the cable car (or hike) to the top of Table Mountain. Fully guided and vehicle supported, this tour on 2 wheels will provide a great insight into the history, culture, wildlife and landscape of the Western Cape. Explore International. This holiday is part of our Explore International range. Participants on these trips can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience! Is this holiday for you? ADVENTURE CYCLING. This is a relatively leisurely-paced cycle tour suitable for hybrid-type bikes or mountain bikes fitted with smooth-rolling semi-slick or slick tyres. There are 8 cycling days with a day off the bikes after 5 days of riding. Average daily distance is around 68 kilometres (42 miles) with an average of around 830 metres of ascent each day. The roads are generally quiet, well-surfaced and the hills are never too steep. Expect to be riding for around 5 hours on each of 7 days and around 2 hours on the other cycling day. The trip is professionally guided and there is a full-time support vehicle (Mercedes Sprinter with 14 seats and a bike trailer). Accommodation is in comfortable guesthouses throughout, some of them on working farms. All accommodation is twin-share with en suite facilities. Trek 7.3 FX hybrid type bikes are provided locally within the cost of the holiday. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group accommodation near Stellenbosch. Briefing, bike set-up and winetasting. Meet at the group accommodation on a working farm just outside Stellenbosch. A group transfer from Cape town Airport is provided and the guide will accompany the group on the 1-hour drive to our guesthouse, located on a working wine farm just outside Stellenbosch. After checking in, there will be a tour briefing. We will then set up the bikes ready for our first ride the next day. The afternoon is then spent visiting one of the local vineyards for wine tasting. Our guesthouse accommodation tonight has a swimming pool. KE Land Only package services start with the single group airport transfer.

PAGE 3 MEALS D Day 2: Two short and excellent rides including the Baines Kloof Pass. Overnight in Ceres. The day starts with an early breakfast, before getting onto our bikes and cycling through Stellenbosch, following the Hellshoogte road up to the first scenic pass of the trip. This is a good opportunity to make sure all the bikes are set up correctly and a chance to stretch our legs after the long flight. This first ride is 28km long with an elevation gain of 450 metres and will take under 2 hours. We then transfer for an hour and a half to the outskirts of Wellington. Here, we will get back on the bikes and cycle the Baines Kloof Pass. Built in 1849 by Andrew Geddes Bain using convicts and raw, rough materials and methods, this road is a national monument and has stood the test of time. The more dramatic, northern section of the pass roughly follows the course of the Witte River where the Western Cape's unique and world-famous fynbos (heathland) cloaks the Boland mountain slopes on either side. We will stop for a picnic lunch and a swim in the Witte River at the bottom of the pass before completing the day's ride. It's then back into the support vehicle for a final short transfer to our guesthouse in Ceres. Again, our guesthouse accommodation has a swimming pool. DESCENT 900M ASCENT 1000M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 70KM MEALS BL Day 3: After a short transfer, cycle over the Rooihoogte and Burgers passes to Montagu. We transfer for an hour and a half this morning to the start of our ride, on the southern edge of the Bokkeriviere Nature Reserve. Following backroads, we then cycle all the way to our overnight stop. The Rooihoogte Pass is the first challenge of the day, but is generally low angle, gaining around 370 metres in just under 8 kilometres. From the top, there are great views out and across the Koo Valley, with its patchwork-in-greens of fruit farms. The second pass was officially re-christened 'Burgers Pass' in 1957 in honour of the indefatigable Mr Burger and his fervent passion to create a road link between Montagu and the main road of the N1 (which is where we started today's ride). This second pass also has an easy gradient and is bordered by the Montagu Mountain Reserve. The last 35 kilometres of the day's ride is largely downhill. We should reach our accommodation in Montagu in the early afternoon, leaving us plenty of time to relax. There is a hot springs resort at Montagu, which you can visit at your own expense. DESCENT 1600M ASCENT 800M TIME 5-6 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 83KM MEALS BLD Day 4: Cycle through a part of the 'Karoo' to Barrydale. After breakfast we cycle from the Montagu springs along the scenic back road, Route 62, traversing a less fertile region known as the Little Karoo before arriving at our base for the night Barrydale. During the day's ride, the landscape changes to the semi-arid desert of the Great Karoo, a huge ancient plateau, which makes up almost a third of South Africa's landmass and is littered with remains of ancient Bushman cultures. Barrydale is a quiet, old Dutch village nestled in a fertile valley surrounded by a colourful mix of vines, fruits and wild flowers. The village co-operative produces a respected Chardonnay, which is a recommended accompaniment to any meal.

PAGE 4 ASCENT 840M DISTANCE 65KM MEALS BL DESCENT 720M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 5: Cycle across the Tradouws Pass, then a second ride in the Langeberg Mountains. Overnight in the Nuy Valley. Leaving our comfy bed and breakfast a short climb takes us up and over the spectacular Tradouws pass. Near the top of the pass are the remains of a prison camp once home to the convicts that constructed the pass in 1873, a stark reminder of the harsh realities of colonial times. From the top, the pass is mainly downhill through the Langeberge Mountains. We then pass through the small town of Suurbrak. Built by the London Missionary Society in 1812 many of the buildings have been restored and now the town has the feel of a living museum. This first ride of the day is 35km with an elevation gain of 225 metres and should take 2 and a half hours. We then take a short vehicle transfer along the N2 highway to just past Swellendam (about 15km), before we get back onto the bikes. We then cycle the very scenic stretch of road following the Langeberg Mountains all the way to Aston. Our second (1-hour) transfer of the day takes us from Aston to our guesthouse on a working wine farm in the Nuy Valley. DESCENT 1070M ASCENT 870M TIME 5-6 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 79KM MEALS BLD Day 6: Backroads cycling to Villiers and the Threewaterskloof Reservoir. Transfer to Hermanus. We start the day with a short transfer to avoid potentially busy roads around Worcester, then cycle on backroads to Villiers. The road takes us through valleys with nature reserves on either side, before levelling out amongst the cultivated farmland of the Western Cape. Our route then takes us beside the eastern edge of the Threewaterskloof Reservoir and on towards Bot River. After another great day's ride, we load our bikes onto the support vehicle and transfer 40 kilometres to Hermanus. In the 1920's, this town was known as a place to convalesce and was recommended from as far afield as London as a place to take in the 'champagne air'. Grand hotels were built and its reputation as a holiday resort was established. Nowadays it still manages a delightful balance between industry in the form of fishing and tourism. Hermanus is famous for close sightings of the southern right whale which come to this region each year between July and December. DESCENT 730M ASCENT 750M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 73KM MEALS BL Day 7: A free day in Hermanus. Whale and great white shark watching options. Or spend the day at leisure. No services are included today. You can take it easy, spend time on the beach or arrange a whale-watching trip during the season or even great white shark cage-diving experience. Whales can be spotted along the coast any time from July to November and from September to November you are pretty much guaranteed to see whales. Any activities are at your own expense. We spend a second night at our Hermanus accommodation. MEALS B Day 8: Cycle the 'Whale Route' to Gordons Bay. Transfer to overnight in Simon's Town.

PAGE 5 Today, we have a treat in store, as we set off on the coastal route that will take us west and then north to the town of Gordons Bay. Just a short distance from Hermanus, we have to cut back inland to pass the Botrivier Lagoon, then stop for a while to explore Kleinmond Harbour. Back on the coast again, Betty's Bay makes a good place for a lunch stop, before continuing on a scenic stretch of coastline known as the Whale Route. Turning towards the north, we can look across False Bay to the Cape Peninsula. This is a stunning road that hugs the coastline, with rugged mountains on our right side and thee ocean to our left. We transfer from Gordons Bay around to Simon's Town on the other side of False Bay. DESCENT 780M ASCENT 800M TIME 5 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 80KM MEALS BL Day 9: Transfer to the Cape Peninsula. Visit the Cape of Good Hope and then cycle to the Boulders Penguin Colony. In the morning we transfer to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. We visit the Cape of Good Hope for the obligatory photos and take a short walk to the lighthouse for the stunning views before getting onto the bikes and cycling out of the park. We then follow the coastal road all the way to Simon's Town, stopping at the Boulders Penguin Colony on the way. We spend a second night at our Simon's Town accommodation. DESCENT 480M ASCENT 480M TIME 2 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 30KM MEALS B Day 10: Cycle to Cape Town along the Atlantic coast and following the 'Cape Argus Route'. This morning we cycle from our accommodation all the way back into Cape Town along the Atlantic coast line, following the second part of the famous Cape Argus race route. We start by cycling up the old naval road to the top of Red Hill pass with its stunning views of False Bay. We then cycle to Kommetjie, Misty Cliffs, Scarborough and through Noordhoek to the world famous Chapman's Peak Drive. We cycle up and over Chapman's Peak into Hout Bay. This section of road can sometimes be closed and, if it is, we have to take an alternative route. Additionally, the support vehicle cannot follow the cyclists on Chapman's Peak Drive and will drive around to meet the group in Hout Bay (15km stretch of road unsupported). We have lunch in Hout Bay before cycling up Suikerbos Ridge to Llandudno and then follow the coastline to Camps Bay and then on to our guesthouse accommodation. We will celebrate the end of the tour with a sundowner either in Camps Bay or on top of Signal Hill. DESCENT 1200M ASCENT 1200M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS DISTANCE 59KM MEALS B Day 11: A free day in Cape Town. A full free day to enjoy Cape Town. There is the option to take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain. Or, if you are still feeling strong, the guide will be happy to take you on a hike to the top. Kirstenbosch Gardens present an easier sightseeing option and there is also the opportunity to simply chill out on the beaches near the guesthouse. The guide will be on hand to offer help or to facilitate with short local transfers. We spend a final night at our Cape Town accommodation.

PAGE 7 Airways flight from Johannesburg and is usually in the early afternoon. At the end of the holiday, the transfer back to Cape Town Airport is timed to work with the late afternoon departure of the South African Airways flight. Clients MUST provide the KE office with full details of their flights. Accommodation Throughout the tour we use a mix of comfortable guesthouse accommodation, some of which are on working farms. Group Leader & Support Staff The trip will be led by an experienced local cycling guide. In addition, there will be one support vehicle and driver. Altitude This holiday does not involve any significant ascent to altitude and we would not expect any altitude issues with this trip. Spending Money We estimate that a total of around 300 per person should be allowed for personal spending. This amount should also be sufficient to cover non-included meals, miscellaneous expenses, including any departure tax (if applicable), and for tips to local staff. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs or undertake any additional activities or excursions, you should budget accordingly. Also, if you expect to buy considerable quantities of soft drinks or beer, you should make an allowance for this. You can either take your travel money in the form of currency, preferably South African Rand. Alternatively, you can withdraw cash from ATM machines in most places. Credit cards are widely accepted. Guidance On Tipping Tips are the accepted way of saying thank you to your local guides and other staff. They do not form part of their wages and we advise local teams that tips are a bonus and entirely dependent on the service that is given. We recommend that you tip your guide and driver, if they have done a good job. As a rough guide, we suggest you allow a total of 50 for tipping your crew. Bike Hire Bikes are provided locally within the cost of the holiday. Our agent in South Africa has Trek 7.3 FX Hybrid Bikes which are perfect for this ride. They are available in all sizes from 15 to 25. They have standard road cycle size (700c) wheels, Shimano components and triple 9-speed gearing (27 gears). The bikes are also fitted with a 2 bottle cages. The bikes are new, in good condition and come equipped with flat pedals. Please provide us with your height when you book, so we can make sure an appropriate size of bike is available for you. If you normally cycle with clip-in pedals, you should take these with you. You will also need to take a helmet, which must be worn at all times when riding. Vehicle Support

PAGE 8 Throughout this trip we have the back up of a support vehicle, which is usually a 14-seater Mercedes Sprinter with a trailer for the bikes. Each morning our main baggage will be loaded onto the support vehicle which generally follow the group on the day's ride. The local biking leader and the support vehicle driver will watch over the group and there will be regular water stops, every 20 kilometres or so and at the top of each of the passes, to allow the biking group to reassemble. We want everyone to enjoy their cycling experience on this trip and we recognise the importance of group members being allowed to cycle at their own pace. The support vehicle will pick up any group members who wish to take a break from cycling at any time. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where available) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table.
