A Highland Family Adventure Specially designed by Dream Escape 2017 Page 1 of 13

A fabulous, fun-filled active adventure, this trip takes in the spectacular remote North-West Highlands, famed Loch Ness and dramatic Glencoe before concluding on the cobbled streets of the capital city. Highlights include a private fishing experience with an expert guide, pony trekking and cycling in the UK s largest national park plus a private dawn chorus canoe to soak up the sights and sounds of the stunning Highlands. Accommodation, whether nestled in an idyllic highland location or in the heart of Edinburgh is impeccable throughout, ensuring a comfortable and truly memorable trip for all. Day One: Arrive Edinburgh International Airport On arrival at Edinburgh International Airport, be met and greeted by your experienced chauffeurguide who will accompany you for the duration of your trip. Travel north to the region of Perthshire which in the words of Sir Walter Scott Is the fairest portion of the northern kingdom". Taking in the region's breathtaking variety, from its serene glens and endless expanses of lush forest, to its bleakly beautiful moors, rushing rivers and tumbling waterfalls, it is impossible to argue with him. In this glorious setting is your accommodation for the first two evenings, a Scottish baronial castle. This property has been impeccably restored and is now complete with less than 40 bedrooms and suites situated in the turreted fairy-tale property itself and a modern annex. The property is hugely popular with both visitors and locals for dining. The fine dining restaurant holds no less than 3 AA rosettes. The brasserie states the food is matched only by the simply superb views of Loch Faskally and over to Ben Vrackie. We are yet to find someone to disagree. Page 2 of 13

Day Two: Fishing & Hiking Start the day with fishing, a sport which combines peaceful surroundings, a chance contemplation and time away from the real world, whilst still providing a few thrills. Against a stunning backdrop, cast your line for salmon or trout on a Highland river or secluded island loch. A friendly and knowledgeable ghillie will help you cast your line whether novice, beginner or expert - in the hope of landing the perfect catch! To follow, visit the magnificent wooded gorge where in July 1689 The Battle of Killiecrankie was fought between Highland Scottish clans supporting King James VII of Scotland and Government troops supporting King William of Orange. The peace and tranquillity was shattered when the first shots in the Jacobite Uprising were fired. Although it was a stunning victory for the Jacobites, it had little overall effect on the outcome of the war. One soldier escaped by making a spectacular jump across the River Garry at the spot now known as Soldier's Leap. Reserved privately, our local Ranger Guide will take you on a walk through this significant historical area, which was also said to be one of Queen Victoria s most favourite parts of the country. Page 3 of 13

Day Three: Take to the Saddle Depart the property and continue ever northwards watching the scenery change as the Lowlands fully give way to the Highlands. Pause in the Cairngorms National Park, the largest of its kind in the UK covering some 4, 500 square kilometres. This spectacular mountainous area is home to the UK s six highest mountains and contains 55 Munros (a term that is applied to a mountain over 3000ft). There are huge forests of ancient native trees, cascading waterfalls, and more wildlife than you can shake a capercaillie (a huge woodland grouse native bird of Scotland) at. In this wilderness playground, enjoy two take the saddle experiences: Armed with mountain bikes, explore the area which was described as one of the glories of wild Scotland by world-renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough. There are three handpicked routes available to suit all abilities and preferences, each offering breath-taking mountain views. The second experience involves a slower, more sedate mode of transport, by pony. Friendly and skilled guides will accompany you as you ride on your very own pony. With varied hill, moorland, river and pine forest riding, much of it off track, there is the potential to see wildlife and enjoy the peace, space and magnificent scenery. Page 4 of 13

You may even be lucky enough to see the majestic Red Deer, or woodland creatures such as Pine Martens and Red Squirrels. Perhaps even spot rare birds such as Crossbills, the near-extinct Capercaillies or a soaring Golden Eagle. Time permitting, make your way to a nearby sheepdog farm for a unique show. During a 45-minute demonstration amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland, you will see up to eight dogs working as a team manoeuvring sheep and ducks through various obstacles. Every dog has its own set of commands enabling visitors to see just how each of them responds to individual whistles. As you watch, the moves of the dogd will be fully explained by their handler. Your home for three evenings is located in Nairn, on the Moray Coast, near Inverness. Once described as the most beautiful Regency House in Scotland, it is set on 20 acres of well-tended lawns, walled gardens, woodland and streams. A series of well-kept paths connect with the house, enabling guests to explore the gardens and rest and relax in secluded seating areas or on the sunny terraces. The fine dining restaurant holds a coveted Michelin Star and offers fabulous views over the lawn to the lake. The hotel s kitchen gardens provide much of the organic fruit, herbs and vegetables; the focus is on creating dishes combining these with produce of local, artisan growers, breeders and foragers. Page 5 of 13

Day Four: Highland History The Highlands really are the Scotland of your imagination, a beautiful and inspiring region of ancient landscapes with a fascinating history. Their majestic natural beauty only emerged in the early 19 th century, largely due to Sir Walter Scott s novels and poetry, which captured the true essence of the region. The area is home to a Neolithic burial site and standing stones which are one of Scotland s most evocative sacred prehistoric sights, believed to be around 4000 years old. This site was the inspiration for the Craig na Dun stone circle through which Clare Randall falls in Diana Gabaldon s Outlander series. Enjoy a private guided walk of the battlefield where the Jacobite Uprising was quelled in In less than 60 minutes, the Jacobites of Scotland outnumbered by an estimated 2000 soldiers, lost to the armies of the English throne. In the aftermath, the government ruthlessly set about dismantling Highland culture, depriving clan chiefs of their legal powers and clansmen of their weapons. Jacobite estates were seized, speaking the native Gaelic became a hanging offence and the kilt and tartan were banned. Mighty Fort George was built nearby as a government army base. Perhaps also enjoy an introduction to how some of the Highlands most luxurious cashmere is produced and treated. Page 6 of 13

Day Five: Loch Ness Loch Ness is without a doubt, Scotland s most famous stretch of water. Extending 23 miles, the loch provides spectacular views - the scenery is breath-taking regardless of the time of year. The day starts as the sun rises and accompanied by your guide, you set sail in Canadian canoes. Journey through spectacular scenery, embracing sights and sounds of the dawn chorus as Scotland wakens. Keep your eyes and ears open as you paddle in search of bats, otters, deer and feeding osprey as the sun and mist rises a truly memorable experience. Later in the day, explore the waters from on board a luxury motor cruiser which, with a capacity for just six guests, would be reserved exclusively. Sumptuous platters of Scottish delicacies are served as you sit back and admire the spectacular scenery, including impressive Urquhart Castle, which dates back to the 13 th century. Once one of Scotland s mightiest strongholds, it is now nothing more than atmospheric ruins overlooking dark waters. During your trip, you may even catch a glimpse of the elusive resident The journey completes at a beautiful spot on the south side, where there is the opportunity to take a walk to the Falls of Foyers. This is where the River Foyers completes its journey from the high mountains and dramatically drops some 450feet into Loch Ness. The Fall is a pair of spectacular waterfalls. Page 7 of 13

Day Six: Torridon, Wester Ross Depart the Loch Ness area travelling north-west to your next accommodation. Situated in 58 acres of wilderness at the end of a magnificent sea loch, this multi-award-winning property sits in one of the most spectacular and idyllic locations. With fewer than 20 bedrooms, it retains a feeling of intimacy and charm. Originally built as a shooting lodge for the first Earl of Lovelace in 1887, it has been owned by (amongst others) Ada Lovelace, once she married William King, 8 th Baron King. Daughter of Lord Byron, this 19 th century mathematician is now credited as the world s first computer programmer thanks to her work on Charles Babbage s Analytical Engine. A room in the hotel is named in her honour. Immerse yourselves in the beauty of the area with a private guided walk of the Torridon Hills. The local knowledge and experience of your guide will make all the difference as they take you to some very special places where all you will have to do is stand back and enjoy the stunning views. The Torridon Mountains are carved out of ancient red sandstone sediments laid down 800 million years ago. Old Red Torridon represents some of the oldest sedimentary rocks in the world, topped 200 million years ago later by a layer of white quartzite which as it glints in the sun as if sprinkled with snow. Many consider it to be the finest mountain landscape in Scotland. Page 8 of 13

Day Seven: Activities, Torridon, Wester Ross The range of outdoor activities on offer in the area is nothing short of amazing. Perhaps spend the day participating in a new challenge or a familiar pastime - expert tuition will be on hand for all abilities. Feel the blend of calm and anticipation as you raise your bow and lock onto the target, ready for a bullseye, as you try your hand at the ancient sport of archery; for an even bigger thrill you may prefer to pick up a rifle for a spot of clay pigeon shooting. Experience the Torridon coastline from an exhilarating new perspective as you go coasteering scramble over rocks, leap from cliffs and swim through bays. Although not for the faint hearted, coasteering offers an incomparable way to experience your surroundings. You may also like to don a wetsuit and immerse yourself in the adventurous world of gorge scrambling. The area has a wealth of waterfalls, rock slides and pools just waiting for those brave enough to venture in! Perhaps try your hand at sea kayaking. Found along the Scottish sea kayak trail, the coastline of Torridon and the surrounding areas provide a unique and diverse environment to explore. As you take to the water, you will be continually treated to breath-taking views of the surrounding mountain ranges, wild country and exciting wildlife. Page 9 of 13

Day Eight: to Fort William Begin the journey south, pausing at Eilean Donan Castle. Situated on a small island where three great sea lochs meet, it is now very much an iconic image of Scotland. Step inside to view historic artefacts and displays of dangerous weapons. Learn of the 13 th century castle s fascinating history, from feuding clan chiefs to Jacobite risings with an explosive ending Continue further south, where you will check into your penultimate accommodation, a beautiful castle nestled in the foothills of Ben Nevis, Scotland s highest mountain. This renowned Relais et Chateaux property was built in In 1873, Queen Victoria visited the area, spending a week sketching and painting. She wrote in her diaries, 'I never saw a lovelier or more romantic spot'. The fine dining restaurant at the castle is a culinary experience to savour, with a legendary father and son taking the helm of the kitchen and offering the finest dishes using local produce. The restaurant boasts 3 AA Red Rosettes a well-deserved honour. Page 10 of 13

Day Nine: Jacobite Steam Train Often said to be one of the great train journeys of the world, and perhaps now best known from the Harry Potter films, the iconic Jacobite Steam Train travels from Fort William to Mallaig and is sure to be a highlight for fans of the boy wizard as well as stunning scenery. Travel over the 21 arches of the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, which towers high above the ground, before passing one of the most famous and beautiful stretches of coastline The Silver Sands of Morar. The journey is spectacular and will likely be a highlight of the trip. On a clear day, you can see the enchanting Small Isles of Muck, Eigg and Rum, as well as Skye in the distance. At Mallaig, re-unite with your driver and make the return journey via the road. It is equally as scenic and allows more stop offs. Perhaps pause at Arisaig, which lies at the southern end of The Silver Sands of Morar and admire the sublime coastline. On the shores of Loch Nan, The Prince s Cairn marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie finally embarked for France in September 1746 after evading the government forces trying to capture him since Culloden. Thereafter, travel west to your penultimate accommodation, a world-renowned property nestled in the countryside. When it first opened its doors in 1924, it was described as a Riviera of the Highlands. Today, its reputation for luxury is undiminished. The 850-acre estate is situated in the heart of Perthshire, and offers sumptuous accommodation, impeccable service, Michelin-starred dining and an array of country pursuits and leisure activities with expert tuition on-hand. Page 11 of 13

Day Ten: The Journey South Begin the last leg of your return journey south. Pause to visit Stirling Castle, perhaps one of Scotland s most important castles whoever ruled here, often ruled the nation. The castle towers over some of the most important battlefields in Scottish history, including Stirling Bridge, the site of William Wallace s victory over the English in 1297, and Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce defeated the same foe only 17 years later. It has been meticulously restored to its original Renaissance glory. Noted highlights for younger visitors include the Royal Palace complete with costumed courtiers, bodyguards and servants from the 16 th century. Children can dress up in period costume, play some medieval instruments and try their hand at games and quizzes. It is hands-on and great fun. Afterwards, continue south to Edinburgh. Sometimes referred to as the Athens of the North, it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It has two distinct areas: the Old Town, dominated by a medieval fortress; and the neo-classical New Town, dating from the 18 th century. The harmonious connection of these two contrasting historic areas, each with many important buildings, is what gives the city its unique character and saw it awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in Check in to your final accommodation, a stunning Victorian building with Scottish baronial influences. It is a luxury hotel in the true sense of the word. While many Edinburgh hotels claim to have city landmarks on their doorstep, few can say their own doorstep is a landmark. Page 12 of 13

Day Eleven: Edinburgh Highlights On foot and accompanied by a qualified guide, explore Edinburgh s Old Town highlights. The Royal Mile, which lies at the heart of the Old Town, is arguably one of the most famous streets in the world. Today, it is peppered with stores selling cashmere goods and hand crafted silver jewellery. However, in centuries gone by it was a different story: delving into the Old Town is like leafing through the pages of a dusty historical novel, as each era unfolds with its own legends and characters. Enjoy a visit to Edinburgh Castle which towers over the city from its volcanic rock. Step inside the ancient walls and learn of the royalty who lived and died here and the struggles for control of the nation. There is an abundance of family friendly visits to discover perhaps enjoy a peak into Edinburgh s ghostly past with a guided tour to some of the city s most haunted spots, or visit the National Museum of Scotland here, find monsters, meteorites and a gigantic Tyrannosaurus rex and enjoy interactive games and displays in the Science and Technology galleries. Day Twelve: Onward Travel Your chauffeur will accompany you to Edinburgh Airport in time for your flight. End of Services Page 13 of 13
