2 Page 4 of 16 About our Hike Rating System Our rating system provides a useful, general gauge of a hike s difficulty. It factors in distance and elevation gain and is intended to help you choose hikes that you will find most enjoyable. R0-R10 These are more walks than hikes. They re usually close to home, the trails are flat, and distances are generally short. An after-dinner walk around the block would be rated R1 or R2. Our Wednesday Night Walks are R5. R10-R20 Most of these hikes will be in the lower mountains and foothills. Distances will be about 5-8 miles, with vertical ranging from feet...not easy if you re new to hiking! Trails will be dirt and rock. As long as you re in moderately good shape, you should be able to enjoy the outing. R20-R30 Hikes in the low end of this range will be too hard and overly stressful for many new members. Plan on an all-day trip, with at least 4 hours of continuous hiking in rugged and steep terrain. At a minimum, be sure to pack two quarts of water, lunch, a snack, and rain gear. Outings Protocol Outings Inform the outing leader you are going to attend. Arrive early for the outing. If you carpool, reimburse your driver for driving costs. A suggested amount is $4.00 for each hour of driving. Always take snacks, lunch, water and rain gear. Bring extra clothes to change into after the outing. To keep vehicles clean and the air fresh, always carry something to hold muddy boots and sweaty clothes for the ride back from a hike. Your participation is at your own risk. Piedmont Enviromental Center Map R30-R40 These are strenuous hikes. They will usually be 10+ miles, with climbs of feet. They re appropriate only for those who have done a number of lower rated hikes. R40+ These hikes are usually 12 or more miles with 3000 feet or more of elevation gain. They re appropriate only for fit, experienced hikers. Check with hike leader about the trip if you are wanting to do this trip for the first time.

3 Outings Page 5 of 16 The Wednesday night Walkers will meet every Wednesday evening in the parking lot beside Tex & Shirley s at the Friendly Shopping Center at 6:30 pm for a brisk walk before dinner. The group will have rotating leaders. The leaders are Carol Hamley, John Hanson, Barbara Kennedy and Lana Gainey. The group will go to dinner after the walk. If bad weather cancels the walk, the group will still meet at 6:30 and go to dinner. November 1, Friday North Carolina Dance Festival Aycock Auditorium, UNCG This will be the 4th year (I think) I m leading this outing. Join us for an evening of modern dance by professional NC choreographers. It s the 23rd year for this prestigious festival and it s always exciting and fun. We ll meet on the steps of Aycock Auditorium at 5:45 and begin with dinner at one of the many restaurants on Tate Street. Those wishing to just go to the performance can meet us in the lobby of Aycock at 7:45 for an 8 o clock performance where I ll hand out the tickets. Please let me know if you are coming by October 24 so I can get a reduced group rate. The performance is only about an hour long so those going on a Saturday hike can still make an early night of it. Send a check to me for: General admission - $18 Students $14 Seniors - $9 If we have 10 people for a group rate of $8 (We always do) I will reimburse you the difference that evening.check out and go to the artists tab for a taste of what s in store for the 23rd festival. Also click the gallery YouTube videos November 1-3 Williamston, NC Paddle and Platform Camping on the Roanoke River This weekend we are going to paddle The Roanoke River from Williamston to Jamesville and celebrate the last hurray of the paddling season. Our return trip on Sunday will be to paddle out to Jamesville and return home that afternoon. The paddle trip will be either or miles depending on the weather and the decision of the group. Mitchell, Graybeard, Table Rock, etc... After lunch on Pinnacle, we ll head back down. Those interested will stop at Fatz for dinner on the way back. Call or for meeting times and places. 14 miles, +/4000 feet [R-54] Let s eat cheap, tasty and healthfully at Deep Roots. This is a joint work day coordinated by PHOC and FSM (Friends of Sauratown Mountains). We will be working on sections of the MST trail at both parks. Details for the work to be done, starting times and meeting place in the parks as well as the cookout information will be broadcast closer to Nov. 3rd. Wear clothes and footwear suitable for trail building and bring water, gloves and a snack. Please join Nicole to hike this beautifully varied trail before winter sets in for good and the bears head out to hibernation. It is a club favorite for the vigorous exercise it affords and the beautiful varied views it offers a rushing creek bids us bon voyage, an invigorating ascent up the Cedar Ridge Trail gets our blood flowing, the gently rolling terrain of the MST along Bluff Mountain soothes our soul, and a 5-mile finish down the lovely Flat Rock Trail sets our imagination thirsting for a good replenishing meal. The whole shebang is a tad less than 17 miles. Due to the length of the hike, this outing is for experienced hikers only. Please don t forget to bring plenty of water and rain gear (although your humble leader is planning for sunny weather, the higher powers do not always meet with her wishes). We will stop in Elkin for dinner. Please contact Nicole and let her know you re coming and to get meeting places and times. Approximately 17 miles. +/-3500 feet. R-52

If you have hiking poles, kahtoolas and any blaze orange hats or clothing please bring that as well. I would rate this hike a 25 or so just because of some of the terrain. We will leave from Shoney s in Greensboro and from McDonalds at exit 118 on Highway 52 North near Winston. Please or call for meeting times, PHOC did a 7 day backpacking trip in the Wind River Range in WY during the first week in August. On clear days, views down to Lake James are magnificent, and the vista of Mount Mitchell and the other peaks of the Black Mountains to the west is perhaps the best from any hiking route used by the club. This outing is an excellent one for viewing Linville Gorge from south to north without braving the steep, rugged trails into that hiking wonderland. Bring water and lunch and wear layered clothing. If interested in this hike, contact David, preferably by noon on Friday before the outing. (11 miles, 2500 feet, R37) 9:30 am Hanging Rock State Park, Visitor Center Today we will do two important things. The first is the opportunity to get an orientation to the Piedmont Hiking and Outing Club. Let s meet in the warm environs of the Visitor Center at Hanging Rock State Park. There, leaders of the club will explain our many opportunities for hikes of every difficulty. We will also introduce kayaking, biking and other outings, both nearby and throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. We will discuss gear that we recommend as well as provide the information you need to keep up with all the opportunities we offer. PHOC Annual First Day Hike: 10:30 am Hanging Rock State Park, Visitor Center For members and those graduates from the orientation we will celebrate the New Year by climbing to the top of Hanging Rock. On a clear winter day the views can be striking. Those who wish can go straight down, for a brisk four mile hike. Others can latch onto the Wolfe Rock Trail and add miles, up to a 9 mile hike to Cook s Wall and Moore s Knob for additional fine views. Either way your heart will thank you for a healthy start to the year, and you might meet some folks you ll enjoy knowing for a long time. December 29, Sunday PEC Let s meet at 9am at the Piedmont Environment Center for a lovely Sunday morning hike along the lake shore trails. No need to call unless you have questions. Approx. 7 1/2 miles.
