3 The BYU-Idaho Outdoor Learning Center Rules and Guidelines It is the responsibility of the self-managed leaders to make their group aware of the following: 1. Individual Conduct - Please be respectful of each other, the staff, and the Outdoor Learning Center. We reserve the right to ask a group to leave if they choose not to follow the guidelines outlined in this packet or by the staff during your stay. 2. Facilities - The Badger Creek Outdoor Learning Center is a church owned facility, and so we ask that you treat it with respect. Vandalism of any kind is not tolerated. Also, we have many groups that utilize the property, and so we ask that you be considerate of the natural beauty here. Please do not cut down trees/vegetation or carve into the trees standing or down. 3. Automobiles - Cars are not allowed into the camping area other than for drop off and pick up. 4. Evening Activities - Out of respect for our neighbors, we ask that loud evening activities be finished by 9:30 p.m. 5. Damages A cleaning inspection is done between each group. Any damages incurred as a result of abuse of a cabin or theft will be charged directly to the group. 6. Clean Check - Self-managed groups are required to complete a cleaning check before they leave. This includes the cabins, grounds, and the pavilion area. 7. Ropes Courses - The ropes courses and team building equipment are not to be used without the supervision of an employee of the Outdoor Learning Center. 8. Insurance - All leaders and youth participants in the program must be adequately insured while traveling and participating in the activities. This is mandatory. 9. Accidents - All BYU-Idaho personnel are trained in first aid. Serious accidents will be treated at the Driggs Hospital. 10. Admissions and Standards - Participants of any race, color, creed, ethnic, or national origin may participate. All registrants must maintain high standards of morality and abstain from the use or consumption of drugs, alcohol, coffee, tea, and tobacco while in attendance at the program. 11. Food in the Cabins Food is not allowed in the cabins. This is really important not only for your group, but for groups that come after you. If you bring food into the cabin, you will have mice and rodents wanting to bunk with you. 12. Items Not Allowed - Please do not bring I Pods, Game boys, radios, firearms, firecrackers, or fireworks of any kind. (Cameras are acceptable. Cell phone service is very limited.) 13. Liability Waiver and Assumption of Risk Agreement - All participants must sign a Liability Waiver and Assumption of Risk Agreement. The forms will be supplied to the leader for all participants. A participant s signature must be completed before they arrive at the BYU-Idaho Outdoor Learning Center. A parent or guardian s signature will also be required for everyone under the age of Clothing - Dress standards at Badger Creek reflect the dress code of BYU-Idaho. Bare feet, midriffs, tank tops, shorts, and bathing suits (boys or girls) are not allowed (except for canoeing and rafting). Boys must wear shirts at all times. A detailed outline of the Dress and Grooming standards is included in this packet.

4 BYU-IDAHO OUTDOOR LEARNING CENTER WORKSHOPS Initiative/Team Building Activities (Strongly encouraged for all groups) This course consists of numerous activities which will challenge the thinking of those involved. There are various obstacles, tasks, and problems to solve; sometimes using equipment, while other times not being able to speak to one another. This is an excellent workshop for building teamwork, unity, trust, self-esteem, communication, etc. (2 hours) ROPES COURSES - Ropes Courses are designated by an asterisk. It is best to offer your participants a variety of activities that include non-ropes activities as well. *Inclined/Horizontal Log This is a high element ropes activity. The participants have the opportunity of walking up an inclined log. Upon reaching the top they step onto the horizontal log and walk across. The participants are then lowered to the ground using a belay system. Helmet, harness, and climbing ropes will be used. (2 hours) *Climbing Tower/Zip Line This high element ropes activity consists of climbing the face of a 35-foot high wall. The participant will learn climbing techniques to aid in their ascent. Once at the top, participants are clipped into a zip line and zip down. Helmet, harness, and climbing ropes will be used. (2 hours) *Climbing Tower/Rappel This high element ropes activity consists of climbing the face of a 35-foot high wall. Once at the top, participants will free rappel back down. Helmet, harness, and climbing ropes will be used. All participants will be using a back-up belay system. (2 hours) *Giant Swing This element is another high ropes activity consisting of swinging from a height chosen by the participant. The highest point is 40 feet above the ground. This is a self-release system. Helmet, harness, and climbing ropes will be used. (2 hours) *Power Pole This is a high ropes activity which involve a great deal of commitment. Participants will have the challenge of climbing a vertical pole and standing on top; afterwards jumping out to touch a hanging tennis ball. Helmet, harness, and climbing ropes will be used. (2 hours) *Jungle Gym (Discouraged for groups of 11+) This is a high ropes activity where participants move from pole to pole across challenging and suspended cable bridges, traverses, ropes and walkways. Helmet, harness, and climbing ropes will be used. (2 hours)

5 Initiative Activities Blue Barrel o' fun: the group is broken into two teams, and told to move a 55 gallon drum (empty of course) from point A to point B. The catch is: they can't use their hands. The next group moves it again, but must think of a different way to move the barrel. Each group goes a few more times, and practices problem solving for about mins. A-Frame: Similar to Blue Barrel o' fun, but instead of moving a barrel, an 8 foot wooden A-frame is used, bringing different challenges. **Wild woosy: two steel cables (a foot off the ground) form a V. Partners take turns starting at the point, and working their way as far down the line as they can. They learn to support and trust eachother as they lean further towards one another mins. **Mine-field: Blindfolded, a participant navigates his way through a "mine-field" of stones by listening to his partner calling instructions to him from the other side. He has to discern his partners voice out of the crowd of other people yelling to their partners. If he steps on a rock, he goes back to the start! This one is fun, and invites a great discussion about listening to guidance mins. Teepee Shuffle: Participants randomly line up on a 15 foot log. They then must arrange themselves in order (oldest to youngest, tallest to shortest, etc.) without stepping on the ground. The catch: nobody can talk during the activity! This helps teach communication in a group mins. **Proudy's landing: Each member of the group must swing on a rope swing, and step onto a 3 ft. square platform. The swing is small, but the space on the platform runs out as the whole group piles on. If anyone falls off, everybody back! This one is always a blast, and can have a great discussion about leaving no-one behind, breaking down barriers, and more mins. **Prison wall: Every member of the team must get to the top of a 9 ft. smooth wall. Working together, people lift and pull each other up. To ensure safety, only 2 people remain on top, and everyone helps spot the current one climbing up. This one is a challenge, but a real growing experience. It takes some athletic skill for the first and last few people, but even girl's camps can work through it. 30 mins. Sometimes this one is flooded out during spring run-off, ask your counselor when you arrive. Spider's web: Team members must help lift each other or climb through a "web" wall made of cord. This one is fun and can also invite a good discussion about honesty, teamwork, trust and more mins. Save the Baby: A ring of stones forms a 40 ft. diameter circle full of "lava." In the middle is a small island. On the island there is a baby doll, and a 15 ft. tree stump. The team only has a long rope, and must work together to "save the baby!" mins. Giant jump rope: The group must pass through a 20 ft. jump rope. First people go in by two's, and do a successful jump. Then by three's, then four's, all the way until the whole group can do a clean jump. Blind Walk: Participants are blindfolded and silently listen for different sounds to follow, working their way to "the iron rod." This one can invite a powerful spiritual discussion, with a more spiritual tone, but takes about an hour and a half.
