Kidsty Pike is the highest point on our whole journey and also provides the longest walking day; but there will still be time to visit the ruins of Shap Abbey on our way to Shap village. (16½ miles) B,L,D DAY SEVEN We leave Patterdale today for the walk up Kidsty Pike, passing Boredale Hause and Angle Tarn en route. Kidsty Pike is the highest point on our whole journey and also provides the longest walking day; but there will still be time to visit the ruins of Shap Abbey on our way to Shap village. (16½ miles) B,L DAY EIGHT Our route today takes us over the roof of England, past the mysterious Nine Standards Rigg, and it is here where we leave Cumbria and walk into Yorkshire (some call it God s own Country!... well Terry is a Yorkshire Man!). The walk ends at the lovely village of Keld. (12¾ miles) B,L,D DAY NINE *Those who have opted to do the first half only of the Coast-to-Coast route will depart this morning. For those remaining, the way today is via Crackpot Hall, past the historic lead mines and hushes of Gunnerside, to Reeth. We pass en route Surrender Bridge, used as the setting of the introduction to the James Herriot films. (11¼ miles) B,L DAY TEN We leave Reeth by way of Marrick Priory and the Nuns Steps on our walk to the lovely Georgian market town of Richmond. (10½ miles) B, L DAY ELEVEN We have to cross the Vale of Mowbray today, from Richmond to Ingleby Cross. This is an extension of the Vale of York, so it will offer some (welcome?) respite from those daily ascents and descents! (17 miles) B,L,D DAY TWELVE In front of us today are the wonderful Hambleton and Cleveland Hills, but first we need to complete the Vale of Mowbray to Osmotherly. We will visit the ruins of Mount Grace Priory en route. (15 miles) B,L DAY THIRTEEN The route is from Osmotherly to Fat Betty on Blakey Ridge. We now join up with the Lyke Wake walk, Lyke being a dead body in old Yorkshire terminology and wake meaning a procession over the Moors to a Burial mound. (20 miles) B,L,D DAY FOURTEEN On our walk from Fat Betty to Ellerbeck today you can meet the famous Yorkshire Moors ancient crosses: Old Ralph, Young Ralph, Fat Betty and Blue-Man-I The-Moss. For extra Christian input we cross the Monks Trod all will be explained! (8 miles) B,L DAY FIFTEEN Our final approach to Robin Hood s Bay from Ellerbeck is via Jugger Howe and Busby Stoop, where we are rewarded by our first sight of the North Sea. Well done! you have as good as made it. No turning back option now but would you want to after so long? (12 miles, no specific high point) B,L,D DAY SIXTEEN Departure after breakfast. NOTES Please note that this tour has a 6 person minimum for departure. Please note the daily mileage. This is a very challenging tour. You can opt to do half of the Coast to Coast and come back another time to finish the 2nd half. 11 OUR GUIDES INTRODUCING OUR FINE GUIDES Janet Niepokojczycka, our Principal Guide in the Lake District and Scotland. Janet is descended from a Polish family, but was herself born in Nottingham, England. She has spend much of her life in Cumbria. As a Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria, she has worked for a number of tour companies as a guide, but is happiest when she is out walking. She is a particular expert on archeology, vernacular buildings and medieval industries. Her travels by packhorse in the mid 80 s, carried out as fund raising events for charities made the national headlines. Alan Heppenstall, began as Principal Guide back in 1985 and now runs our operations in the Lake District and Scotland. Alan was born in Newcastle, England. As a guide, Alan has been awarded the most highly regarded Blue Badge license. Terry Colley is our Coast to Coast leader, and has been a tour guide and mountain leader for over 30 years. He has vast experience in guiding American walkers from his company English Adventures, he has toured the English Lake District and the North of England extensivley, along with too many Coast to Coast tours to mention. Colin Boulton, I have lived in the Cotswolds for nearly all of my 68 years and have always loved the beauty of this the largest of the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the United Kingdom. Because of this I became voluntary Warden over 20 years and have specialised in taking people on guided walks not only showing them some of the very beautiful environment but also explaining why the area has been so important in the history of England. I recently stepped down from the post of Head Warden and am now concentrating my attention on developing our work with younger children ( 6-10 age group) giving them the opportunity to learn more about there environment beyond a computer screen. Tom McCafferty, Tom is a Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria and Hadrian s Wall and has been guiding professionally since He is a true Cumbrian, born in Maryport on the West Coast and is a retired Police Officer with a wonderful sense of humour and dry wit. He possesses a natural ability to make you smile. He has a sincere passion about his home County and simply loves to share his knowledge and love of The Lake District, with its breathtaking spectacular scenery and legendary poets authors and artists. Tom loves meeting people and relating tales of folk lore, history, characters and industrial heritage in this the most wondrous part of England. 12 SELF GUIDED TOURS ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND WALES Jane Austen s World 3 Nights - This is an excellent extension to one of our guided tours. This walk takes you through beautiful Hampshire countryside that was the inspiration for the works of Jane Austen, author of Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility and many others. The walk takes you right past the house where the authoress lived and which is open to the public. SELF GUIDED TOURS ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND WALES Cornwall 6 Nights - The Lizard Peninsula is the southernmost part of Britain and an area of astounding beauty. From the start you enjoy views of the well known silhouette of St. Michael s Mount, and go on to see marvellous wild flowers and birds, perhaps catch a glimpse of a Basking Shark, or eat delicious ice-cream at Coverack not to mention endless views of romantic creeks and breathtaking cliffs and the busy port of Falmouth. The Shakespeare Way 7 Nights - The Shakespeare Way follows a route that the great poet and playwright may have taken when he left his birthplace, Stratford-on-Avon, for London sometime between 1585 and The Shakespeare Way passes through some beautiful places and beside notable landmarks, including the Rollright Stones, Chipping Norton, Woodstock, Oxford, Marlow, Cookham, and Kew, before finishing at the recreation of Shakespeare s Globe Theatre in Southwark, London. Derbyshire & The Peak District 7 Nights - The Peak District in the county of Derbyshire is like an upland Cotswolds. It is an area of immense variety and importance, rich in wildlife where dramatic moorlands contrast sharply with lush valleys and stunning limestone gorges, where centuries-old stone villages and market towns have been as much a part of the environment on the landscape itself. The contrasting landscape is never more apparent than in the High Peak to the north, where you ll find the Derwent Valley s historic Dam Busters dams and the caverns in the picturesque village of Castleton. England s Coast to Coast 13 Nights OR 19 Nights -Established by the immortal Alfred Wainwright, the Coast to Coast Walk is one of the classic British walks. It traverses the North of England from the Irish Sea at St Bees to the North Sea at Robin Hoods Bay, passing through some of the most beautiful and varied scenery in the country: the mountains and lakes of the Lake District, the majestic valleys of the Yorkshire Dales, the heather moorland of the North York Moors, and, by way of contrast, dramatic coastline. The Great Glen Way 8 Nights - The Great Glen Way is a spectacular walking route from Fort William, nestling under the massive Ben Nevis to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. The trek takes you from the beginning of the Caledonian Canal past Neptune s Staircase and past Lochs Lochy, Oich and Ness. The trek terrain varies from towpath flat walking by the canal, to forest walks and woodland paths by the lochs, as well as some tarmac walking on a very quiet peaceful road. Isle of Skye 9 Nights -Stay at the delightful village of Mallaig on the mainland for the first three nights. Get used to the more relaxed pace of the Highlands and Islands, and stretch your legs on some fine local walks. Then we will take you to the fishing port, from where you can approach Skye by boat, arriving at the southern village of Armadale, before heading towards the Cuillin and the mountains of northern Skye. The Isle of Skye is a paradise for walkers -quiet beaches, remote cliff-tops, deserted villages. The Edge of Wales 5 Nights - A Walking Holiday in North Wales along the Lleyn Coastal Path, one of the great Celtic Trails, offering a complete package of accommodation, local information, maps, gps, baggage transfer and transport. Spectacular Welsh countryside on the 47 mile (75.6 km) coastal path along the Lleyn Peninsula leading to Bardsey Island. ALL FOUR OF US, AGES 15-55, HAD THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME. THE TRAILS, INNS, MAPS, DIRECTIONS, MEALS WERE SIMPLY AMAZING, FULL OF BEAUTY AND HISTORY. WE REALLY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE PLEASED. 13 TESTIMONIALS TESTIMONIALS RAMBLING TESTIMONIALS The tour of the Highlands and Isle of Skye was fabulous. I just can t say enough about our wonderful guide, Janet, the accommodation, itinerary, and great group of people. Now I should say thank you very much, for this trip was to me more than sightseeing. I could touch the English way of life not at the surface but, I think, at the core. We are back and singing the praises of our experience in Scotland. Janet was an incredible guide and companion to us all and for me especially who was not the most skilled walker in the group. Her guidance, care and enthusiasm were beyond our expectations. You can add me to your list of testimonials the trip was magnificent and Janet is pure gold always bright, cheery, and knowledgeable. The group was very amicable. We laughed until our sides hurt (within the limits of small Scot hotel propriety). Chris added a delightful dimension to our stay on Harris. He is a first rate guide and a really good guy. He and Janet made a nice team. Our guides were Janet and Anne, and they were exceptional. We enjoyed their knowledge, their positive outlook (we had some really wet weather), and their friendship. Their competence made our tour everything we had hoped for, and more. Thanks for hiring the best. Thank you for a delightful itinerary and flawless execution. I want you to know what a great trip I experienced on the Inn to Inn - Lake District walk I had never been a walking trip before Ramblers. And didn t know quite what to expect. I was so impressed at the seamless way that Janet and Anne directed the group and organized our week. The walks were perfectly timed, we were able to have a leisure morning, have a great breakfast then begin our walks. 24 CALL US TOLL FREE VISIT US AT 25
