The introduction of the Ballito Junction mega mall (featured on page 16) and other major developments are all a result of the ever-growing number of people who now call Ballito home. From a very young age the girls loved to be in the kitchen cooking, baking and trying out new things. They were encouraged by a loving mum whose passion for food and cooking certainly rubbed off on them and inspired them to be constantly growing, innovating and experimenting with food and so began the food journey of The Delish Sisters. From a food stall at the Wonder Market to a little restaurant at The Ballito House to a fully fledged café at The Litchi Orchard (their current home), The Delish Sisters business and popularity continues to grow. The girls and their staff are amazing, the food is phenomenal and if we re honest The Delish Sisters are the Painted Black team s unofficial choice for Neighbourhood Hero. THE THE LITCHI ORCHARD As the newest addition to The Litchi Orchard family, The Shed Restaurant has rapidly gained popularity. They have successfully created a relaxed atmosphere with incredible gourmet pub grub, speciality drinks and friendly service. Set on a raised platform in amongst the beautiful litchi trees, The Shed team lives out their slogan to live simple share often through their love of all things local. Their menu lends itself to a shared style of eating and they have successfully revived the classic community night out, with the highlights being Bingo Night Wednesdays and Live Music Sundays, which are always perfectly complemented by their Gin on Tap. YOLI S THE LITCHI ORCHARD Yoli s offers an array of finely crafted baked goods that are lovingly prepared by hand an art form that head pastry chef Nicky Cooper is deeply passionate about. Everything is baked from scratch on site, ensuring the quality of all the products. Using amazing ingredients from local suppliers, such as unbleached flour from Durban-based Millstone mill, means their range of bakes is free of preservatives, additives and GMO. Yoli s has a philosophy of using traditional baking methods and the beautifully crafted croissants, sourdoughs and pies have become firm favourites around town.

Cindy s is a North Coast institution and a must see for both visitors and newcomers to the area. COUNTER CULTURE CAFE Counter Culture is a unique, community-focused restaurant where like-minded people can share and explore their passions. It is described as a home away from home where people can hang out, eat, drink and talk all things lifestyle. The aim was to create an environment that encourages visitors to eat local produce, consume incredible drinks and chill with the people that make the community what it truly is. Counter Culture is more than just a restaurant though; it is a lifestyle brand offering apparel, surfboards & custom motorcycles, all under one roof. In short, Counter Culture is a lifestyle. Whether you ve just had a morning surf or an afternoon ride or are just looking for an outstanding coffee or refreshing gin, Counter Culture is your go to spot in the Ballito village. SALT CAFE Salt cafe is positioned opposite Shaka s Rock Beach and specialises in pizza and coffee. They offer other tasty treats such as pastries (baked fresh daily), toasties, frappes and smoothies but are famous amongst locals for their hand crafted pizzas and amazing cappuccinos. Grab a take away and head down to the beach or take a seat and watch the world go by either way, Salt café is a must if you re new to the area or just visiting. THE WATERBERRY COFFEE SHOPPE The Waterberry s setting is unique - a tranquil untouched piece of indigenous coastal forest with an abundance of bird life - right in the middle of the town. After enjoying a meal and a world-class coffee visitors are encouraged to get back to nature and take a gentle stroll along the beautiful winding Waterberry forest path. The Waterberry family has endured falling trees and fires over the years but their faith and perseverance keep bringing them back. The Waterberry, its owners and its staff are an inspiration to everyone in the Ballito area and as long as there is a Waterberry there will be a steady stream of loyal and loving customers. RAY S KITCHEN Ray s Kitchen is an inspired collaboration between the owners of Mt Edgecombe based Marco Paulo (Paul Sheppard and Brenton Franks) and chef Ray Friedman. Paul and Ray have known each other since they were teenagers so when Ray returned from working overseas they reconnected and Ray s passion for fresh produce immediately caught Paul s eye. When an opportunity at Dunkirk presented itself, the environment was a perfect match to Ray s food style and within a week or two they were setting up the kitchen. If you re after hearty café style food prepared with locally sourced seasonal produce, in a safe and secure country club environment surrounded by beautiful indigenous trees, then look no further than Ray s. The Painted Black team can personally vouch for the low and slow special a selection of slow cooked barbecue style meats washed down with any one of the fantastic beers on tap. The restaurant has a loyal following and booking is essential if you don t want to be disappointed. And trust us, if you make the trip to Ray s Kitchen you will not be disappointed.
