17 PAGE 33 The Mourne Mountains The Mourne Mountains are the highest and most dramatic mountain range in Northern Ireland, its summits crowned by granite tors. The mountains themselves are criss-crossed by an unrivalled network of paths and tracks, providing enthusiastic walkers with incredible opportunities for exploration. The Mournes are a granite mountain range and are divided into two very distinctive areas the Eastern or High Mournes and the Western or Low Mournes. Any newcomer to the Mournes will be simply amazed at the variety of landscapes that can be encountered within such a confined geographical area. 1 Slieve Donard (853 metres) Named after Saint Domangart, a 6th Century holy man who built a prayer cell on the summit of the mountain. Slieve Donard is the highest peak in Northern Ireland and in the wider province of Ulster. It is also the 19th highest peak on the island of Ireland. 2 Slieve Commedagh (765 metres) Translated means mountain of guarding / watching (as in look-out). Slieve Commedagh lies to the northwest of Slieve Donard, and the two are linked by a mountain pass. At the summit of the mountain is a small one-room tower. This stone tower is part of the Mourne Wall, which passes over the mountain. 3 Slieve Binnian (747 metres) Named after the rocky tors (little peaks) situated around the top of the mountain. Binnian has a long summit ridge along which its several tors resemble an array of little horns. 4 Slieve Bernagh (739 metres) One of the most distinct mountains in the Mournes and is renowned for the granite tors on its summit. 'Gapped' or 'broken mountain', gets its name from its two giant rocky tors and the col lying between them. 5 Slieve Meelbeg (708 metres) Meaning little mountain of the ants and has excellent views of Fofanny Dam, Lough Shannagh and Blue Lough. 6 Slieve Meelmore (704 metres) Name translates as the big bare mountain. This mountain encompasses sections of the Mourne Wall and spectacular views of Slieve Bearnagh. Slieve Gullion Cuilinn s Mountain (575 metres) Slieve Gullion has a lough on the summit plateau, named after the Cailleach Beara, and is where Fionn Mac Cumhaill got his white hair. This fate is still said to befall anyone who bathes in the lake. Ti Chulainn, where Setanta became Cuchulainn, is said to have been situated on the mountain too. The summit has two cairns, the southern passage tombs entrance is faced towards the setting sun on the evening of the winter solstice. The Ring Dyke, from where the Ring of Gullion got its name, is a unique geological landform, unparalleled elsewhere in Ireland or the UK and was the first ring dyke in the world to be geologically mapped. The ring of low, rugged hills forms a rampart around the heather-clad Slieve Gullion mountain. Rich semi-wild habitats of heath, bog and woodland contrast with the neatly patterned fields and ladder farms. Slieve Gullion s mysterious reputation arises from its associations with legends and the wider area s rich archaeological heritage.

22 PAGE 43 Heritage Fact and myth are woven together in Mourne and Ring of Gullion countryside. The landscape still holds traces of civilisation dating as far back as 4,000 BC. Much of the area s heritage is steeped in Christianity, and the legacy of Patrick, Ireland s patron saint. Maghera Round Tower, Dundrum Ring of Gullion

23 PAGE 45 The story of Christianity in Ireland began here in the 5th Century Saint Patrick brought his boat ashore in County Down. You can walk in his footsteps today, and visit the land where he established Ireland s first Christian Church. Saint Patrick made County Down the cradle of Irish Christianity. He died here, and his final resting place is beside Down Cathedral in Downpatrick. The land still bears the trace of Ireland s ancient past. When Patrick arrived here, the land was marked with dolmens and monuments. You can still see the ancient heritage that pre-dates Christianity in the stone circles, megalithic tombs, dolmens and chambered graves. Step forward to the Middle Ages to see castles and tower houses, built between 1200 and 1600, which consolidated Anglo-Norman political power in the region. The Mourne Mountains and Ring of Gullion region is dotted with churches and grand estates, as well as holy sites and historic buildings. Many attractions are totally unique, and if you are interested in Christian and pre-christian heritage you have a huge choice a taster of a few hours or a pilgrimage of many days. Legend has it that Fionn Mac Cumhaill threw it from the opposite side of Carlingford Lough at a rival but in reality, it was deposited during the last glaciation over 10,000 years ago and may have come from Scotland. Chronicles of Narnia CS Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia that began with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, was inspired by the Mourne landscape. He wrote of the scenery here it made me feel that at any moment a giant might raise its head over the next ridge. Lewis holidayed in the Mournes, near the village of Rostrevor. 29 PAGE 57 Did you know? Great granite Deirdre of the Sorrows Conchobar mac Nessa King of Ulster decided that Deirdre, the most beautiful woman in Ireland, would become his wife when she became of age. He took her from her family and held her in seclusion on the slopes of Slieve Gullion. However, Deirdre fell in love with a young warrior, Naoise, and they fled. Although Mourne granite is now protected, one of the last large pieces to be quarried in the area now stands in Kilkeel, as a monument to fishermen who lost their lives at sea. The local company that made the monument also made the Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park, London. Conchobar tricked Deirdre into marrying him after having Naoise killed. Frustrated by Deirdre's hatred toward him, Conchobar offered Deirdre to the man who had murdered Naoise. Deirdre, it s said, died of grief. It is told that from Deirdre's and Naoise's graves grew two trees and they became so intertwined that nothing could ever part them again. 41 PAGE 81 Saddle Up Equestrian activities Many people insist that the view is better on horseback. Whether you are a total novice or an experienced rider, try to elevate yourself to see the Mourne Mountains and Ring of Gullion as nature intended. More horsepower You can ride along quiet country roads, or get the wind in your hair on beaches or along forest trails. It s not so much the Wild West, more the wild east of Ireland. Horseriding is the ideal way to explore more remote areas of the Mournes and Ring of Gullion, and gives you a new perspective on the landscape. It gets you closer to nature, and of course you can cover more ground than on your own two feet. Even a novice rider can feel a real sense of adventure on horseback. The area s various equestrian centres cater for all age groups and levels of experience, starting with total beginners. You will find everything from long hacks to short treks. It s truly memorable horse riding, along coastline and through countryside.

43 PAGE 85 Get Hooked Fishing You are only a few casts away from fresh catch in the Mournes and Ring of Gullion. The water is never far from view, and it flows in every possible way. The fishing waters are perfect for a great range of game, coarse and sea angling. Depending on your area of interest, you will be able to find a waterway to suit. Castlewellan Lake

44 PAGE 87 Before you fish The area has loughs, lakes, rivers, canals and, of course, the Irish Sea. For the fishing enthusiast, that means there is a huge choice of settings, all in spectacular and reliably unspoilt locations. You could choose a relaxing day at one of many tranquil lakes and rivers, bagging trout or salmon. Or you could test your skills with sea angling, either from shore or by boat. An offshore trip could bag you ray, turbot, dogfish, mullet, flounder, mackerel, pollack, coalfish or tope. Find out what type of rod licence or permit you need for the location. Many permits are easily available locally for visitors. The contacts you need are in the listings that follow. If you re a serious angler, you might want to work your way round several of the options on offer. You could combine a fishing trip with some serious (or lighthearted) walking. Remember no day s fishing is complete without a round-up in the evening beside a roaring fire. Did you know? Hemingway s friend The family of Major-General Eric Dorman-Smith MC came from Kilkeel. Awarded the Military Cross before he was 20, he became a close friend of Ernest Hemingway, who based characters in his novels on him.

Chefs are very proud of the local delights, and make a point of creating dishes that make the most of them. The big three in Northern Ireland are lamb, beef and potatoes, but the country also has world-class dairy, pork and chicken, as well as local vegetables. In the Mournes and Ring of Gullion, the fish and seafood is first class, and as fresh as it comes. Local products are served up in traditional ways, or with a global twist. For a taste of authenticity, look out for traditional bakery and bread products, Irish stew, beef in Guinness, champ and the well-known Ulster Fry of course! Fine diners will love the local venison and pheasant, oysters and mussels from Dundrum Bay, free range duck and pedigree pig. Local, independent producers offer free-range eggs, butter, honey, ice-cream, rhubarb, orchard fruits like plum and the famous Armagh apples. Take your pick from hotel restaurants, brasseries, cafés and pubs. If you prefer to roll your sleeves up and get your apron on, try the Mourne Seafood Cookery School in Kilkeel. Here you can learn to cook fish and other foods like the experts. Mourne Seafood Cookery School
