1 The Newsletter of the Hurricane Mountain Chapter of ADK Good Tidings November 2018 February 2019 Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. John Muir ( ) Get this issue in In the News... full color at: The next Good Tidings issue e will be... hurricane-mountain/ Welcome to the 21st century! This is the LAST issue of Good Tidings that will be sent via US Mail (aka snail mail ), unless we -NEWSLETTER are otherwise notified. To continue getting your treasured copy of this newsletter please be sure you send your address to hurricanechapteradk@gmail.com. To ensure you stay current on Hurricane activities, we will send Hurricane Happenings via around the first of each month. It will contain reminders of events and activities, a link to the newsletter and any new announcements. This transition will probably have some glitches don t they all? So if your address is not right, we need to fix it. Please help! Big cheers to the team that is working to make this happen: Linda Bogardus, Joe Bogardus, Debby Rice, Don Pachner, Leslie Shipps, and Nancy Kohlbecker. Thank you for keeping us connected. Chair Words: A message from Chapter Chair, Christine Barnes Goals and Achievements Seeking peace in the wilderness or blazing a new trail or winding your way along a river doesn t have to have a goal to be worthwhile. But sometimes a goal or a challenge can help us get to new places, hone our skills or meet new people. Recent Hurricane accomplishments are worth noting: Paddlers Bethany Krawiec and Debby Rice completed the ADK challenge The Paddle Pursuit. They each paddled a designated sampling of 48 scenic waterways coursing through our magnificent park using their favorite non-motorized vessel. It included large and small lakes, rivers and ponds. Both the paddling, the pursuit and the festive celebrations were all as upbeat, fun, and lively as they are! Their enthusiasm for paddling is catching! Try it! 1
2 2 November 2018 February 2019 Trail Maintenance expert Joe Bogardus was cited by the 46ers for his extraordinary completion of 1046 hours of service helping create and maintain trails in the Adirondacks. We ve all hiked on some nasty trails Bethany Krawiec and sometimes we forget the dedication it takes from people like Joe to keep our trails in such great shape! He is truly an inspiration! Congratulations to you all! Debbie Rice Hurricane Chapter has some skilled, dedicated and energetic people. They are a lot of fun and full of adventure. Join an outing or host an event to meet more of them and get inspired! Christine Barnes, Chapter Chair Hurricane Spotlight: Ruth Kuhfahl Joe Bogardus Ruth, who lives in Keene Valley, has been an active member for the Hurricane Chapter since 1989 almost 30 years! She has lots of stories, but they all echo her love of the outdoors, and especially how much she values trail work and road cleanup. She just wants the places she cares about to look good. Some ADK colleagues at University of Buffalo introduced Ruth Kuhfahl in her Lost Pond canoe her to hiking back in They hiked the Bruce Trail in Canada. Then they moved on to the Finger Lakes trails and eventually hiked to JBL. By then she was hooked, even though she wore fireman s boots on her first hike! She moved to Keene in 1989 and joined the Hurricane Chapter. Ruth led the trail committee for Hurricane from , and she continued actively doing trail maintenance for many years after that. She has been known to explore beyond the trodden path, but notes that she only ever leaves footprints. Despite the fact that Ruth turned 95 on October 10th she was able to go canoeing on Lower Saranac Lake in September. Friends who appreciate all she has done for them and for the Adirondacks over the years joined her in the paddle and helped ease her way at the rocky picnic site. In her boat however, Ruth was totally self-sufficient. No worries there! She has always been an avid birder and shares her knowledge with both novices and experts. She is also notorious for belonging to the Isabel 6. That would be the group of six women who paddled Saranac River as Hurricane Isabel came to town and they were guided back to their vehicles by a kindly stranger. It was a never-to-be-forgotten adventure. After a recent accident Ruth pondered whether she would ever see Weller Pond her favorite place again. But again with a team of willing friends and her unflagging spirit she was able to get there. The sun was shining, the water calm, and Ruth was in touch with nature in her favorite place. May we all be as resilient and caring as Ruth! Ruth Kuhfahl (center) and friends

Fire Tower Celebration The Hurricane Fire Tower joined the Fifth Annual NYS Fire Tower Lighting Saturday, September 1st. This event is meant to showcase the history of fire towers around the state. Led by the Friends of Hurricane Mountain, the tower was lit by a propane fueled Coleman lantern hung in the cab. The Hurricane Chapter is proud to have supported their efforts to rebuild the tower on Hurricane Mountain. The lighting statewide was done between 9:00 and 9:30 and the Hurricane light could be seen for miles around. Multiple backyard gatherings and parties were set up from Elizabethtown to Keene to view the lighting and fourteen hardy souls, including our very own Mary Jean Bland were on the summit to see the lighting first hand. New Hurricane Leadership Mary Jean Bland lighting the Hurricane Mt. fire tower At our annual meeting in August, the membership voted in new Board members. Christine Barnes will remain as Chapter Chair and Nancy Kohlbecker will move into the Vice Chair position. Maureen Deighan will remain as chapter secretary (many thanks!) and with the well-deserved retirement of Bill Peabody as treasurer, we welcome Jill Murray on to the team. Other changes include adding Mike and Stephanie Battisti to manage Membership. They will jointly see that new members are welcomed and encouraged. Also, as we manage the transition to electronic communication, we really appreciate that Don Pachner and Debby Rice are lending their expertise during this challenging process. Joe Bogardus continues to carry the weight of both the outings and trails programs. Without the dedication of these clever, hardworking and dedicated people, the chapter could not continue to operate. As we work more and more as a team, we are finding that we can find new solutions, involve and encourage more people and have a good time in the process. You are always welcome to attend board meetings, join a committee, and just send your ideas to anyone on the board. They are all worth listening to! Carl Heilman II Director s Report ADK Board of Directors Meeting, June 2018 The meeting was primarily a review of accounting methods and overall state of finances of the organization. In brief, they were felt to be in a stable condition. Significant capital expenditures toward the multi-
7 Good Tidings 7 year, 1 million dollar infrastructure investments at Heart Lake. The work there was slowed by weather factors in the spring but significant progress was made. Household membership levels have remained relatively stable at approximately 17,000. Active membership promotions are being pursued. There is an uptick in new members in the first five months of the year, of approximately 6%. Social media continues to have an increased presence. Significant outreach activities are planned, in particular in the New York City area. The issues of parking and overuse, potential solutions and problems are most recently reviewed in Adirondac magazine, by the Executive Director Neil Woodworth, in the September October edition. Dean Melville Our second annual Aquafest was held in Wilmington in June with over 100 participants. Thanks to Placid Boatworks and Adirondack Lakes and Trails, many people got to try new ways to have fun on the river. Above, left to right: Aquafest paddlers, Aquafest grillmaster Meeting with other chapters Algonquin Event Nancy Kohlbecker On Friday evening, August 31st, Chris and Bill Barnes along with Nancy and Bob Kohlbecker attended the Algonquin Chapter s Annual Fall Picnic at Point au Roche State Park. It was most enjoyable to attend a function of another chapter, meet their members and chat about happenings in their organization. In attendance was Ann Biesemeyer Bailey whose father was the founder of our Hurricane Chapter. And by the way, if you ve never visited Point au Roche, it s a lovely park on Lake Champlain just north of Plattsburgh with numerous walking trails worth the trip! Shatagee Invitation Chris Barnes Last fall I received an invitation to a meeting of the Shatagee chapter that is located on Chateaugay Lake. Since I have fond memories of Chateaugay Lake where I worked at camp for several years, I decided to attend. We later realized my invitation was a mailing label error. Lucky me! It was a delightful but small group. They have the potluck routine down just like Hurricane and then we discussed common issues our chapters face: aging membership, lack of participation, and visibility being some. Members of their group often do outings together and these may be active like hiking or skiing but are also often a bit more cultural like a museum day or a bus trip to a Canadian park. They sometimes team up with other chapters which seems to work well. I look forward to reconnecting with this group. Maybe for AquaFest. Anyone else interested?
