9 Example of a hiking day schedule Morning Wake up, breakfast Clean, pack up all gear Activities, games Hiking day begins Late morning to late afternoon Hike in small groups - eat snacks, play games, invest in new friendships, purify water, take pictures, practice new leadership skills and roles Debrief hiking day and leader of the day experience Evening Set up camp, make dinner and clean up, evening meeting, reflection, readings, lights out Each hiking day will vary in length; it s hard to know exactly when you will start and end each day as it depends on your route and the health and motivation of your group. 11 HOW YOU CAN PREPARE 1. Complete all student paperwork 2. Using the equipment list, start acquiring required gear 3. Physically prepare. Make daily exercise a priority; include family and friends to make it more fun: basketball walks school sports teams in-home strength training 4. Mentally prepare. 18 "Appreciating nature opened my eyes to there being a whole bigger world than our world. There's so much more, so much beauty that we've never even thought of before." I learned about organization in many different ways. Packing a pack in a certain way forced me to do something that I wasn t good at initially. I can think about where things go so I know where to find them when I need them. I didn t really like it at first because it was very challenging, but the gratification of hiking pays off, and in the end I ended up liking it a lot. See yourself here The instructors taught me how to poop outside, and that was very hard for me. I got comfortable with something that was initially very uncomfortable. I learned a lot by experiencing other s leadership styles. Some would be more direct, some would take lots of opinions into account. When it was my turn, I tried to do both, but learned that I like to take other people s opinions into account. THE LEADER SINCE 1965 NOLS.EDU

19 We re really excited to have you! THE LEADER SINCE 1965 C5 students come in with a huge amount of leadership training and experience. These are students that are active members of their schools, communities, churches, and families. These are students that are not only academically smart, but frequently are the glue holding a family together. NOLS backpacking courses are unique for C5 students, as they are encouraged to engage with and lead in an environment and natural world that is so different from their home environment.
