President s Message The January banquet was a success. I received lots of positive comments about the Butcher Shop Restaurant. People liked the facility, the food, the location, and ease of parking. I ve already signed us up for next year. See you there. Cathy Rising won the Don Chappelle trophy for her work on the National Tour hospitality room and decorating for all of the meetings. Well deserved (if I may say so)! We remember our members that have passed, especially last year we lost Lee Pierce and Gary Murdock; both wonderful guys that we miss already. They touched many lives and leave a legacy that we all can strive to match. We should always remember the past with its people and lessons, but live in the present, otherwise we miss new things. But, as we fully experience the present we plan for the future so we are prepared for its challenges and opportunities. 2015 is our immediate future and the club needs your help in making it a good year. Join us at meetings and on tour and keep your T s rolling. Sunshine Report Marlene Laughon (Howard s wife, Janna s mom and Chuck West s sister) has been in Grossmont Hospital since January 15 with a serious infection. She is expected to be there for another week or two. She is making good progress and looks forward to coming home. We hear that Ray Galdi was injured when a large pepper tree fell on his truck last month. He isn t able to drive at the moment and going through many tests right now. He would appreciate cards and trying to get as much rest as he can to get better. Ray Galdi 2844 Mira Sol Vista, CA 92084 Remember to call me at 949-492-4255 or email me at judynjohn@burrellteam.com when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. Judy Burrell Club Website Be sure to visit the club s website. Pictures of member s cars and car data are requested. 1915 San Diego Exposition road Race January 10, 2015 In a fitting tribute to the opening of the Balboa Park Centennial, the La Jolla Regional Group of the Horseless Carriage Club of America commemorated the July 9, 1915 historical road race in Point Loma.. Vintage race cars of the period and other pre-1916 vehicles participated in a car show at the San Diego Automotive Museum and then drove to Point Loma to travel over the original race route which still exists on Point Loma residential roads. The original race covered a total of 300 miles (over a six mile route) with only five cars out of 18 that started finishing the grueling route. Earl Cooper in Stutz #8 (pictured) won the race averaging over 65 mph.other notable drivers were San Diegan, William Carlson, who finished 2nd, Barney Oldfield, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Bob Burman. On the morning of the great race, an estimated 50,000 people spread out along the course to watch the spectacle. Newell Booth, a member of the La Jolla HCCA club and also the Model T Ford Club of San Diego, was the organizer of this event and did a commendable job. A good time was had by all. Thanks Newell! Thanks to Tony Bowker for the pictures of these vintage racers taken at the beginning of the Janury 10 event Big Three Parts Exchange February 20-22, 2015 Vendor spaces for 2015 are sold out!
