Greetings and welcome to our newsletter for October I would like to thank Fiona for looking after the monthly meeting for September in my absence. I note we had another possible couple of members and look forward to receiving their membership form. We also had another couple, Andy and Tricia who came along to the start of the New Forest Re-run. Sadly their MGF keyfob had decided to fail the previous day!! A big thank you and well done to Karen for another bumper newsletter for September. Plenty of news and reports of events and activities. Please remember to let Karen have your write up of whatever you have been up to, MG wise that is, and any experiences you have had with your cars, good or bad. In September we had members attending the Beaulieu International Autojumble; eleven cars attending the Tamar Valley MGOC People & Places Run and eleven member s cars for the New Forest Re-Run. Write-ups for these events will follow in subsequent newsletters. On 15 th September, Derek and Gill enjoyed a trip out on the Alison MacGregor, operated by Solent Dolphin. Karen and I went along to wave them off and present a plaque noting our donation to the charity from the New Forest Run. Thanks to John Anderson for arranging the plaque. October remains relatively busy with two activities on the first weekend. We have members attending the Mayflower Theatre to see Mama Mia whilst on the same evening we have a group visiting the Watercress Railway to join their Real Ale Train with the following morning at The Departure Lounge Café for breakfast and coinciding with the final Crotchcoolers Classic Car Sunday of the season! Sadly, due to a lack of interest the arranged run to the Pumpkin Festival will no longer be going ahead. I have received an from the South Leicester MGOC asking if I can provide some tulip route(s) for a visit they are making based in Lyndhurst from June I am working on a medley of New Forest Run routes for them. We are invited to join them during their time down here and I will provide more information closer to the time next year. The mid-monthly meeting will be at The New Queen at Avon. Apologies in advance but I will be unavailable that evening. As autumn approaches, one of my cars was SORN d at the end of September. I have a useful article about laying classic cars, mainly MG s, up from the MG Car Club and if you would like a copy please let me know and I will send you a copy. Enjoy your events this month and safe driving.
Editors Notes: Just arrived back from very sunny Spain, and while I was luxuriating on a sun bed with a beer in hand, I noticed an article in the MGOC magazine which caught my interest, because we own a MG ZT ourselves, it was regarding a New ZT that was going to auction. I have put a copy of the article further down in the Newsletter. I have to say, that to be honest, I am more than glad we were out of the country when the auction took place, otherwise someone, on a sunbed next to me, mentioning no names, may have been more than interested. I discovered on my return that it sold at the auction for 12,100. Thanks this month for articles received for the Newsletter to Roy & Kris for their photograph and report on their recent trip to The Llandudno MGOC Snowdon Run. There are a few reminders from Belinda and Pauline and Robin regarding various events etc. Also some amusing photographs spotted by Robin and Andrew Kettle. I have also included two brilliant Technical Corner articles, the first from Mike Short regarding more relentless work or so it seems, carried out on the TA and also some very useful information and tips from Andrew Kettle. Thank you all so much once again. Karen Christmas Dinner and Disco - FINAL REMINDER All balances must be paid to Belinda or Pauline no later than our monthly meeting on 5 October. The amount due is 30 per person and cheques should be made payable to Southampton and New Forest MGOC. Please let us have your menu choices with payment. Thank you Pauline and Belinda Member of the Year 2016 As we approach the autumn period it is that time of year for members to consider who, in their opinion, should be considered for the annual open vote of who is Member of the Year There are no criteria to assess; it is a personal reflection with opportunity being provided to all members. A voting slip is attached after the Contacts section so you can remove from the newsletter, make your nomination anonymously, and hand to the Club Secretary by mid-monthly November please. The presentation will be made at the Christmas Dinner.
New Forest Run 2017 First meeting!!!! The upper function room at The Empress of Blandings is booked for Wednesday 12 th October from The meeting will start at An agenda was issued last month and is available on the Members web page of our website. Robin Have you seen this man? Yes, it s our own Gordon Maxwell who managed to appear in at least two maritime publications in September taking delivery of his latest toy. Spotted in Henley on Thames. Bit too far to go for a mid monthly!!!
The Llandudno MGOC Snowdon Run Sunday 21st August 2016 Recognise any of these places? Llangernyw, Pentrefoelas, Cerrigydrudion, Llansanan, Llanwst, or perhaps these road signs? Dim mynediad, Gyrrwch Yn Ddiogel, and Un ffordd. Well these were just some of the village names encountered in this year's Snowdon Run Over 200 MG's paraded on Llandudno promenade on a rather dull Sunday morning. After signing in and partaking in coffee and bacon baps ( well up to NFR standard) courtesy of the sailing club and meeting fellow 1009ers the Harrison family in their two almost identical Midgets, we set off on the first stage of the route. This would take us 42 miles to the coffee stop at Glan-y-Gors Karting Track. We drove around the Great Orme and even with hood up we still had spectacular views of Anlesey and the Conwy Estuary. Leaving Deganwy behind us we headed for the Denbigh Moors following some isolated narrow roads with just the sheep and rain for company. Conditions remained drizzly and we were glad of a break and the coffee and Welsh cakes provided whilst watching all the Karts racing. With another 53 miles to go it was back on the road towards Cerrigydrudion and the reservoirs of Llyn Alwen and Brenig the weather was such that we were sadly unable to take advantage of the numerous stopping places with the views towards the Snowdonia Mountain Range obscured by the low cloud. The finish this year was in the Community field in the centre of Betws-y- Coed and at last the sun arrived in time for people to enjoy a chat and the sights and atmosphere of this lovely Welsh village. The sun stayed out all afternoon and after a bite to eat (Welsh Rarebit what else) we said goodbye to Annabel, Chris, Steve and Sophie and headed home and yes it rained again. Our last Snowdon Run in 2005 I remember was under better conditions when we did manage to see the slate quarries at Llechwedd and the summit of Snowdon itself. Such a beautiful area with so much to offer everyone knows that when you visit Wales even in August the weather is always in the lap of the gods.

BRAND NEW MG ZT FOR SALE 2004 MG ZT with three miles on the clock for auction at Classic Car Auctions September Sale. Exactly as it left the factory, the current owner believes this is the best condition and lowest mileage MG Rover in the world. Estimated at between 8,500 and 10,500, the car is for auction on 24 th September. A 2004 MG ZT 1.8 Turbo, with an unbelievable three miles on the clock, will go under the hammer at Classic Car Auctions (CCA) September Sale on 24 th September at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre. A remarkable find, the current and only owner purchased the car from a Derby based dealer in 2005 who was selling off the cars at half price following the collapse of MG Rover. It was then delivered to his farm just outside Silverstone race circuit with only one mile on the clock. The owner wanted to have the best in the world and so the car was immediately placed into storage, initially in a heated garage, subsequently in a Carcoon and latterly in a Car Bag, which has beautifully preserved the car. Amazingly, the owner has driven the car just two miles along the driveway, meaning the mileage now reads only three miles. Now for sale again 11 years later, estimated at between 8,500 and 10,500, the owner believes this is the best condition and lowest mileage MG ZT in the world.
Presented in British Racing Green, it is in immaculate condition and exactly as it left the Longbridge factory. It still has the original ContiSport tyres and even the same fuel that was put in the tank all those years ago. The 1.8 litre turbocharged iconic Rover K-Series engine is gleaming. The high spec interior, so well preserved there s still a new car smell, features half leather seats, green alcantara door lining, air conditioning and CD player. From an Article in the MGOC magazine
The New Queen Inn Ringwood Road Avon BH23 7BG Tel: Mid monthly meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month and are held at a different pub within the Southampton & New Forest Area. There is no format, just an evening to catch up with other members, perhaps enjoy a meal together and chat. Details of the different venues can be found on the 1009 Web Site Calendar.
Time for a Gasket change on the TA The TA has recently not been idling well, and seems to be running hotter than usual. Suspecting an air leak and hence a weak mixture I checked the carbs. I noticed that if I very gently leaned on them the engine would idle perfectly. I tightened the manifold nuts, and then it was bad all the time. Time for a new gasket. Step 1 to remove the carburettors, followed by eight manifold nuts. Four were loose, one nut came undone, two studs came out and one broke under the nut. For once the stud extractor did its job. Its fairly obvious the gasket has had its day. Most of the exhaust sections of the gasket crumbled away. One stud looked slightly shorter than the others. If I try to remove it will it break at the block and have to be drilled out. Out with the stud extractor and it comes out easily. It had been broken off previously and turned round to get about 3 turns into the block. Just as well I took it out. Faces cleaned up and replacement studs fitted ready for reassembly.
A visit to the nut and bolt shop for 4 new M8 fine nuts. A mere 80p each. All back together But wait what s this on the tool box lid. Oh no! I forgot to fit one of the four gaskets on the inlet manifold. This is where it goes. One gasket either side of the choke cable bracket on the left, and one either side of the spacer plate on the right. Carbs back on and switch on. Petrol pump ticks away. Whoops. Hold it, I haven t connected the fuel pipe. Remains of the gasket. Ready for the road. Notice how evenly it s running now. Mike Short
Stitch in Time saves about 700 I noticed recently some damage to the stitching on the passenger seat in our beloved MGF and also some wear to the driver s side seat bolster. Left unattended these two bits of damage would simply get worse so I looked into options. 1) Replacements seats - 850?? That would put a large hole in the motoring fund!! 2) Lots of discussion on MGF forums about how to get seat covers repaired but most required seats to be removed which in turn meant disconnecting the battery and allowing the SRS system to completely discharge for an hour before disconnecting the cable to the seat belt tensioners, with dire warnings about setting off air bags if the procedure isn t followed. 3) Then I came across Dale Brelsford of London and Home Counties Upholstery on the internet or He asked for photos of the damage and some details of the car and location and came back very quickly with a quote of 140 to fix everything on the drive at our house. No need to remove the seats from the car. We agreed a date and last week Dale turned up on time and set to. Took him about an hour to hand stitch the two sides of the passenger seat where the stitching was broken and about half an hour to redress the worn bolster. Great job done and minimal disruption to the car. Andrew Kettle 20/9/2016
