Fine entire sent from Liverpool to New York, U.S.A. carried by the Cunard steamer Niagara bearing a top right hand corner marginal pair of 1s green s, the left hand stamp just touched at foot and a large scissor cut between impressions with three additional 1d red brown s alongside presumably for a late fee payment (One of which is a four margin example) each cancelled by Liverpool 466 numerals and the right hand 1s additionally cancelled by a red PAID handstamp with a red 10 cents handstamp below to show the U.S. Postal office share of the postage for onward delivery. Very attractive wrapper sent from Edinburgh to Glasgow bearing a 2d Blue (SG34) and a 6d purple (SG 60), both neatly tied by an Edinburgh 131 roller cancellation, with an red REGISTERED/ EDINBURGH handstamp alongside. Backstamped by an Edinburgh dispatch cds for SE , and a Glasgow arrival hexagonal datestamp for the same date. Superb entire sent from Cardiff to Athens, Greece bearing a 1d Rose red Pl.90 (SG 43), a 4d Vermilion Pl.8 (SG 94) & 6d Lilac Pl.5 (SG 97) each neatly tied by crisp Cardiff 162 duplexes for JY , with a Calais transit cds for JY a red PD handstamp and a manuscript 20 for postage due for local delivery in Greece with a 20 Cent Greek stamp at top left paying the local delivery charge. Backstamped by Bute Docks & London transit cds s for JY , and an Athens arrival cds for JU The Julian Calendar was still in use in Greece at this period whereas the Gregorian Calendar was being used by the majority of Europe, the difference between the two calendars was 12 days explaining why the arrival cds was four days before the dispatch date once you allow for the eight days in transit. Very fine used example neatly tied to a beautiful highly ornate and decorative embossed valentine envelope by a Nottingham 583 duplex for FE Most attractive, very rare to find valentine envelopes in such lovely quality.... P CC British Post Offices Abroad. Very fine entire frpm Guayaquil to New York via Panama. Prepaid to Panama by a 6d Mauve Pl.9 neatly tied by a superb strike of the Guayaquil type 8 C41 numeral. Backstamped with a BPO Guayquil cds for OC with a corresponding Panama arrival cds on the front for the 30th. It was only possible to prepay with British stamps as far as Panama, from Colon it was carried by US Mailship and charged at the 10c rate on arrival, as seen by the NY Steamship cds for NO Very scarce especially in such fine quality... Very fine cover from Port Au Prince (Haiti) to Paris rated at the post 1876 UPU rate of 1s1½d in red manuscript and bearing a superb strike of the Port Au Prince type CC1b Crowned Circle in red with a BPO Port Au Prince cds alongside for AP Carried by RMSP Co. Steamer Don to Southampton then routed via London and Calais arriving in Paris on the 28th. Although this Crowned Circle was issued in 1842 the handful of known examples are all dated from 1879 to 1881 presumably to cover a shortage of postage stamps. Rare RPS Cert.... P ,250 SG Transatlantic Mail. Very fine cover from Morice-Town to a sailor aboard HMS Satellite stationed at Rio de Janeiro. Prepaid at the 8d per ¼oz rate by two 4d bright-red Pl.3 neatly cancelled by Devonport 250 duplexes for MR Endorsed Via French Packet at upper left and carried by the Messargeries Impériales steamer Estramadure with a fine strike of the very rare octagonal Postes Français/Estramadure datestamp on obverse (Salles Fig ). At this period the British RMSP sailed on the 9th of each month and the French on the 25th, routing this letter by a French packet ensured it arrived almost three weeks earlier than the next RMSP sailing, however this treatment of the mails is scarce and the combination of British mail and the rare French Estramadure datestamp is virtually unheard-of. An exhibition quality transatantic GB/French maritime rarity... P ,750 SG70a 1857 Overseas mail. Very fine exploded envelope sent from Exeter to Prahran, Melbourne, Australia bearing a 6d lilac on azure paper (SG 70a) neatly tied by an Exeter 285 sideways duplex for DE Backstamped by a London transit cds for DE , and a Prahran/ Victoria arrival datestamp for MR A presentable example of this difficult issue on cover, scarce destination.... Very fine used right hand wing margin example lettered KD, showing variety K in circle neatly cancelled and tied to entire by a crisp Manchester 498 duplex, alongside a Manchester cds for JA and a red PD handstamp.
