Isleham Informer Autumn Edition Issue 81 October The 1st Isleham Cubs In February st Isleham Cub pack had a change of leadership. It was looking like the group would close, however a couple of willing volunteers stepped forward, our names are Sam Wilson & Kelly Jones. Since we took over the Cub Pack we have worked tirelessly to make a program that is fun, educational and engaging for all. Our group currently stands at 25 cubs, two permanent leaders and a fantastic parent helper base too. From February to July as a pack, we achieved 7 activity babes and 2 challenges awards - there are 6 challenge awards, once all 6 are earned, the Cub will be presented with their Chief Scout s Silver Award. We asked our Cubs to write about some of the most memorable activities from last term for you read about. They have worked in their Sixes (small groups) to complete their writings. Green Six - Scientists Badge On our science badge we tested celery with food dye but the experiment didn t work properly. Then we made structures out of marshmallows and pasta. After that the Cubs raced balloon rockets and had a great time. Finally we made lava lamp bottles out of oil, water and food colouring. We have some Cubs that have just moved up from beavers and they are really looking forward to doing this badge too. Yellow Six - Human Hungry Hippos Our Cub Pack really enjoyed making hungry hippo boards. First we painted boards multiple colours and we designed logos to go on it and then we screwed on four wheels. Our board had a super hippo on it and it was very cool. After that we put on our crash helmets and we went to get the balls we really enjoyed it. By doing this we have all earned our DIY badge. Red Six - District Cub Camp Our Cub group was invited to stay at Bradfield combust for the newmarket district Cub camp in May. We took part in lots of activities such as: shooting, archery, fire lighting and woodwork. It was an amazing experience and we won the cup camp trophy! White Six - SeaLife Sleepover In Cubs we went to Hunstanton sea life centre for a sleepover it was so so so fun!! We saw lots of fish from a starfish to a giant turtle. We also saw caymans and snakes. At night we slept all around the Ray tank. On the Sunday we went beachcombing to learn about litter and pollution and lots of others found mermaid purses on the beach. We all look forward to another term of fun activities, this term we will be focusing on our village and the local area, we ll be working on a project for Help Our Heroes and hopefully we will be celebrating Christmas as a local community. We thank you all for you continued support. Sam & Kelly. Congratulations Wayne! Hopefully you all managed to see some of Prince Harry s third Invictus Games in Toronto, members of the UK Armed Forces team who, despite suffering life-changing physical and mental injuries on the front line, competed with 16 other nations on the sports field. The stamina and energy shown by these athletes was truly inspiring and we are proud and excited to to see Steel Bones Trustee Wayne Harrod win a silver medal at this amazing challenge! Former Colour Sergeant Wayne Harrod left the Army in 2011 after a 25 year career. He worked hard with the support of various charities to start a new career as a gardener and now feels the time is right to take on another challenge. His new passion for cycling led to his selection for the Invictus Games CLUBS NEWS PARISH NEWS EVENTS SPOTLIGHT FEATURE 1

Notes from The Editor My grandma always said that as you get older time goes faster and it seems she was right. No sooner than the children have gone back to school than autumn is upon us, and the shops are full of Christmas cards. This year the Parish Council is looking even further forward, and on 14th October there we be an opportunity for villagers to join together to plant hundreds of daffodil bulbs at the four entries to the village. They should give pleasure for years to come. Also do remember that the clocks go back on Sunday 29th October. from Christopher Goodwins...OUR EXCELLENT CO-OP We are so fortunate in having such an excellent Co-op here in Isleham! Without exception, the Staff members are kind and polite, and extremely helpful. The range of items is amazingly good for such a small store, and all credit to Ray Goodwin for its management. I would also like to thank the Co-op for allowing us to have a FOODBANK box available, and to mention that Isleham folk have been extremely generous in supporting it for so many years. Sadly, the Foodbank is still absolutely necessary, and there are so many people who still rely upon your generosity. So - thank you, folks!

Isleham WI How quickly the summer has passed! In August our speaker was Brian Carline who gave a very humorous and entertaining talk about growing up in the 40s and 50s in Salford - when Salford was very different from the Salford Keys you see today. Later in the month 3 members visited Southwold on a trip organised by the Cambridge Federation, spending a pleasant day by the sea before going to the theatre. Then on the 19th of August we organised a visit to Holt and Sheringham, which was enjoyed by members and friends. Isleham Parish Office at The Beeches The Parish Clerk will be available: Monday 2pm - 6pm, Tuesday 10am - 2pm Parish clerk available at all other times via ; islehampc@gmail.com KARMA FARM 8 Fen Bank, Isleham; Tel: In September we had our Harvest Supper, with some very tasty food supplied by the members. 7 Isleham Bowls Club Rogues gallery! The 2017 outdoor season has now finished and it has been a good season and all matches apart from one in the Ely league were completed. The ladies Ely & District team struggled for most of the season with good results hard to come by and it was a similar scenario for the men. The mixed afternoon team performed well and finished in mid table. In the Cambs & District league, the mixed team had a very good season by winning 13 out of the 20 matches played and therefore won division 2 at the first time of asking. This resulted in us qualifying for the champions of champions end of season play offs. In the semi final we drew with Waterbeach (winners of division 1) so the match needed to be settle with an extra end. Unfortunately we lost this to narrowly miss out competing the final. September 8th 9th & 10th brought the curtain down on the 2017 internal club competitions and the roll of honour was as follows: We continue to host bingo every Wednesday evenings at our clubhouse, sessions starting at 7.45pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and join in, just turn up. 9 AV O C E T ELEC T RIC A L T E C H N O L O G Y FADS - Running a panto? Oh yes they are! After a six year absence FADS, the new local drama group is set to revive Isleham s annual pantomime. The last village panto was in 2012, run by the school PTA, and ended with the demise of the old village hall, but now the Fenland Amateur Dramatic Society (FADS) is taking up the challenge and will be staging its first panto for Christmas FADS members are keen to encourage participation of Isleham and nearby residents, after all a village pantomime should involve as many villagers as possible, and are looking for people interested in acting (age 16 +), costume-making, set design and painting, make-up and other panto skills. Anyone interested can contact FADS by on fadsshows@ gmail.com or by phone to Malcolm or Doreen Speirs at Malcolm said, We will be aiming to perform the first pantomime in late November/ early December 2018, with rehearsals starting in September. We always welcome new members to take part in our productions but we recognise that some people will only wish to commit to the annual pantomime and this is fine. The village pantomime is a very special tradition and we are excited to be reviving it here in Isleham. FADS next production is a three act play Breath of Spring a sparkling comedy about a gang of ladies who rob the rich to help the poor. Performances will be at the Beeches on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th November, starting at 7.30pm. 11 Isleham Parish Council Update The Parish Council meets on the first Monday of every month at 7.15pm. Meetings are held in the main meeting room of The Beeches. Members of the public are invited to attend the meetings and 15 minutes are set aside each month for public question time. (No food or drink to be bought into the meeting room, please.) Full copies of the agendas and minutes are available on the Parish Council website, the notice boards outside The Beeches and adjacent to the cenotaph and from the Parish Clerk, Richard Liddington: tel , com. Police Matters The ongoing problems of youths smoking cannabis on the recreational field has been reported to the police. Play Area and MUGA Report Can we please ask relevant users of the skatepark not to undertake DIY adaptions to the ground around the ramps as this could invalidate our insurance as well as damage the concrete? Allotment Matters There are still a number of plots available on both the Dunstall and Three Trees Allotment sites. The rent for a ten rod plot which equates to 252m2 is just 13 per annum! Please contact the Parish Clerk for details. Highways Report Residents will soon see two Vehicle Activated Speed Camera in the village. This has been almost exclusively funded by a grant from Cambridgeshire County Council. Parking outside the CO-OP remains a major concern, with drivers regularly parking either across the footpath or on the double yellow lines. This clearly causes danger to both pedestrians and other drivers. Can we please ask all residents to ensure they use the designated parking spaces at the rear and immediately in front of the building? The Parish Council are holding a Bulb Planting day on Saturday 14th October. Please see posters for more details. Recreation Ground There will be a formal consultation meeting on Thursday 19th October regarding the proposed 3G pitch. Please see posters for more details. Can we please remind residents once again that dogs are not allowed on any part of the recreation ground, including the car park. Mr T Waters. Application hearing being held on Additional Planning Meetings: The Parish Council now hold (were necessary) interim monthly meetings to consider planning applications. Such meeting will be advertised on Parish notice boards, the Parish website and the Isleham News Facebook page. *It is important to note that Isleham Parish Council are only ever consultees on planning applications with the final decision for approval, refusal or conditions being made by ECDC County Councillor s Notes carry on doing that. Normally, autumn brings a sense of a new start after the summer rest. This year, I ve been surprised how much County Council business carried on through the holidays. Of course, there are always potholes to fill, and the work on the Ely bypass has been proceeding apace. I think Informer readers have been using the County website to report road defects as I suggested last time - do Another thing that kept me busy over the summer is some work I have been asked to lead about the future of our public libraries. Cambridgeshire s libraries are a great success. 2.3 million visitors a year read and borrow books, use computers, and attend classes and groups. For Isleham and other places that do not have their own library, there is the mobile service (our mobile library calls three times in the month). Elsewhere there are 32 libraries across the county, plus another 11 run by volunteers supported by the council. With new developments across the county, we should open even more. continued...

Development and change are inevitable for libraries. Residents needs change; so does technology; and of course there is not as much public money as there once was. Cambridgeshire has managed to reduce the libraries budget by nearly half so far, without closing any libraries. But we will have to run things even more smartly in future if we want to live within our means. So we have begun a conversation with residents looking for views on how libraries should develop. By the time the Informer comes out, we will have held two rounds of public meetings. Over the autumn, we will be developing our ideas for improving libraries while keeping them affordable. An important part of this work is looking at places like Isleham served by the mobile library. Could we put more services in the vans, as well as book lending? Should the villages be served better using new technology? Could libraries pop up in community buildings? If you use the mobile, or go to the library in Soham or Ely, let me know your ideas for improving the service. However, we live in an imperfect world; conflict continues, and at this moment brave men and women, many known to us personally, are serving in the armed forces around the world. It is a time to remember their dedication and courage, and to pray that peace will prevail. The Bible reminds us that God knows intimately and holds as precious every person who ever was, is, and will be. For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). As we remember all who have died as a result of war and those who strive to bring justice and peace, Christians are reminded that in Christ we have the hope of a world finally at peace; O Day of peace that dimly shines through all our hopes and prayers and dreams, Guide us to justice, truth and love, delivered from our selfish schemes. May swords of hate fall from our hands, our hearts from envy find release, Till by God s grace our warring world shall see Christ s promised reign of peace. Blessings, Revd Sue Associate Priest, Three Rivers Group of Parishes The Revd David Cleugh has been appointed as Rector of the Three Rivers Group. David is currently Priest-in-charge of the parishes of Leadgate, Medomsley and Ebchester in the Diocese of Durham. Bishop Stephen of Ely will institute David to his new post on Friday, 20 October at 7.30pm in St Peter and St Mary Magdalene, Fordham. We welcome David and his family to the Diocese. A time for remembering Having lived for 10 years in Seattle, we always welcome American friends and love to take them out and about to experience British life, history and culture. This year, as we commemorate the centenary of Passchendale and look towards our November Acts of Remembrance, the experiences of two such friends spring to mind. The first was a college student. She adored London, architecture, fish and chips, tea in china tea-cups and the British accent. Another middle-aged friend, an imposing figure of 6 6, was somewhat challenged by our tiny cars, shower cubicles and baths, but bowled over by church architecture and history; he asked to visited Ely cathedral no less than three times! Fond memories, but what really remained with us was the reaction of both to our visiting villages up and down the country. It did not take them long to notice that even the tiniest hamlet has a War memorial dating from the end of the First World War. They were completely taken aback by the devastating loss of lives even in the smallest community. Our young friend s dry 20th century history classes took on new meaning and import, and a stark realization of the horror of war and the price paid for peace. For our older friend came a humility and deeper understanding of the terrible cost of not just the Great War, but also of the Second World War. It led to deep discussions of 20th century European history, and a renewed sense for us, too, of the need to remember the great sacrifice paid for Quiltfest 2017 Thank you to all who supported the quilt display in Church: the stalls and refreshment area in the social centre during the bank holiday weekend. We raised 1300 which helps us to maintain our wonderful church building. Your ongoing support of our fundraising events is much appreciated and we look forward to seeing you at the Festival of Light, our next big event. 14

We will be processing shoe boxes again this year at plfc for Operation Christmas Child, as always we are so grateful for the help of friends here in Isleham and in the surrounding villages. If you would like to prepare a shoebox yourself leaflets are available at the Co-op or from plfc, shoe boxes can be dropped off at plfc Monday to Friday pm and Wednesday evenings pm, from 1st to 22nd November. Operation Christmas Child This year, Pound Lane Free Church will once again be open as a processing centre for the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes. Gift-filled shoe boxes are packed by many people, ready to be sent to children around the world who would otherwise receive nothing this Christmas. Leaflets for further details are available at Pound Lane Free Church and the Co-op. Drop-off points, including plfc, are open to receive boxes between the 1st and the 18th November. 15 Volunteers are always welcome to come along to help with the processing. Training for this is being held on 20th October 2pm-3pm and pm. Please visit for processing dates and times or contact the church ( ) for more details. High Street Church As I write, the fields all around the village have been harvested and we are thankful. Thankful to the workers of course, but especially thankful to God, the Creator of the world. In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, it tells us in detail the order in which things were created. It s interesting to note that each time something new was created, it says that God looked at what He had made and said. That s Good He was right.. it is good and we are thankful! Hopefully you managed to get to one of the Harvest Thanksgiving services held in the village but if not, why not stop right now as you prepare to eat your lunch and give thanks. All good gifts around us are sent from Heaven above,

So thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord, for all His love. The Ark, our new Church which is being built in Beck Road, is progressing well. We are just about to have water, electricity and telephone connected so it s all systems go! If anyone else would like to have a tour of the site, we would be happy to arrange it.just contact the Church office on However, while the building work continues, we as a Church family continue to meet at High Street Church in the centre of the village. We re there on a Sunday at 10.30am and 6.30pm and most days throughout the week at various times, do contact the Church office or find us highstreet.org.uk for more info. You are warmly welcome to join us. God bless you Kathryn Kyte Isleham CofE Primary School A Colourful School House Captain Elections The school year has got off to a flying start with the School House Captain elections taking place during the second week of the new school term. The elections involved all the pupils of the school in voting for their two chosen School House representatives from the oldest class of Year 6 children. However, the other Year 6 children have not escaped without any additional responsibilities to take on! We are always very lucky that our class of top year children rise to the occasion to support the younger pupils in so many ways, not least by acting as buddies to those in Reception Class to help them settle into school. In addition to this, all the Year 6 class now have roles as School Council representatives, Librarians, Music Supporters, Play Leaders or Sports Crew. Well done and thank you to all of them. We look forward to a super year ahead. Sarah Skillern Headteacher WI Art Competition Children at Isleham Primary School were asked to produce an Autumn picture in a competition run by the W.I. The winners were awarded book vouchers, and their entries were displayed at the Autumn Fair at the Beeches. Mollie in the Reception Class The Year 6 children did an excellent job of writing manifestos and presenting them to the younger pupils in school. As has become tradition, they produced posters, flyers and stickers just like those in local Government elections, to encourage others to support them. This year, more than any other, it was a very close-run election, with just 3 or 4 votes separating those elected from those who weren t, so the children could all be exceptionally proud of the support they all had from the younger children in school. The children all learnt a lot about how elections work and the value of democracy through the process. In the end, the Sapphires claimed Finley & Izzy as their Captains, the Emeralds- Grace & Kyle, Amber house- Joe & Faith, and Rubies- Connie & Harlee. One of the children s first responsibilities as House Captains will be to represent the school at the forthcoming Remembrance Sunday Service in Isleham. Florence in Key Stage 1 By Isabelle 16

Death By Paintbrush Following the outstanding success of last year s murder mystery performed by The Beeches Entertainers, the group return again this November with the hilarious and bizarrely named Death by Paintbrush written by Leslie Gunn. Set in the 1920s, we are introduced to the Rothsfield family, their friends and staff, and of course the investigating officers Harry Moody and Joe Sullen. But, as ever with murder mysteries, the audiences get to play along as well. We know our audience love a bit of mystery and lots of laughs said a spokesman for the group, and Death by Paintbrush doesn t disappoint on either count. It s set to be a great night. We re also inviting the audience to join in the fun and come along in 1920s costume, although it s not compulsory, of course. The Beeches Entertainers are joined by some new faces this time round, and we are offering free tickets to a lucky Facebook follower of the group, which could be just as well because if last time is anything to go by the tickets will sell out fast, and those free tickets could be much prized. Our last performance, Jo West s Murder is Served, was an amazing success and sold out quickly, but we recognise that not everyone will see a poster or pick up a flyer, so an important part of our connection to the community in Isleham, and further afield, lies in social media. We now have both a Facebook page and a Twitter -@beechesents presence, as well as relying on the more traditional outlets for getting our group information to as many people as possible in the village. As a way of saying thank you to our social media followers we ll be offering two free tickets at each performance. The group, who donate all of the profits from their performances back into The Beeches Community Centre, are looking to bring more quality entertainment to Isleham in 2018 and welcome all new members either on stage or behind the scenes. The Beeches is a key part of the village, and we are proud to be part of the village and supporting The Beeches. We have some great plans ahead for the next year, and we re really looking forward to welcoming some more new people into our group. Our aim is quite simple Enjoy and Bring Enjoyment! Anyone interested in joining the group should contact them via Facebook or Twitter. Tickets are now on sale for Death by Paintbrush which is being performed at The Beeches Community Centre on Sunday 26th November at 7.30pm. They cost 10 each to include a light supper. Following a long established tradition in Isleham The Beeches Entertainers will be bringing back the ISLEHAM PANTO - FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY. 16th & 17th March 2018 Contact The Beeches Entertainers on for more information. Have you ever found it difficult to know where to get advice or help with difficulties you encounter? All over the country there are branches of Citizen s Advice that are able to offer support in the areas of housing, debt, employment, relationships, legal problems, immigration and consumer affairs. It is a free service run by highly trained volunteers who support the delivery of the work. In Ely the office is situated at 70 Market Street, and there is also a drop-in service operating at the Council offices, Fountains Lane, Soham from 10am -12 noon, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. 17
