.. 0 Issue 091 Monday 15 January 2016 Page 6 1 LOTHIAN BUSES SPRING NETWORK CHANGE - SUNDAY 10 APRIL 2016 Lothian registered its Spring network changes with the Traffic Commissioner s office on Friday 12 Feb 2016 and the details are now in the public domain. The list below shows only those Lothian services that run in/to/from Midlothian services that run entirely within the city and/or East Lothian are excluded. Minor timetable changes means no change in frequency or number of journeys, but some small adjustments in times to enhance reliability. Service 3 Minor Timetable changes on all days of the week. Service 4 Minor Timetable changes on all days of the week. Services 15/X15 Revised Timetable & Stopping Places. Revised timetable introduced on Mondays to Saturdays. ALL journeys will now operate as X15s. Bus stops at Joppa (Morton Street) will be observed in both directions. All X15s, even in the early morning, will run all the way via Penicuik Town Centre and no longer via the short-cut using Queensway. Services 29/X29 Extra time added to morning peak journeys from Birkenside to the city to improve reliability. Further minor timetable changes across the day on Mondays to Saturdays. On Sundays, the service will run later into the evening. If this proves popular, and generates additional passenger demand, there is every chance that a future network change will bring even later journeys on a Sunday. Service 31 Revised timetable introduced on Mondays to Fridays with an enhanced frequency to and from Bonnyrigg at peak times. Minor timetable changes on Saturdays and Sundays. Service X31 Minor timetable changes to improve reliability and coordination with the revised 31 timetable. Service 33 Revised route and timetable is introduced. All 33 buses will operate to and from Birkenside at peak times. Dalkeith Campus will be served by the 49s instead of the 33s. A new early morning journey from Sheriffhall to Baberton will be introduced [this journey had previously started from Kaimes]. There will be minor timetable changes on Saturdays and Sundays. Service X33 Minor timetable changes will better integrate the X33 journeys with the revised service 33 timetable.

Services 37/X37 Minor timetable changes on Mondays to Fridays will see the 37 shorts [to and from Easter Bush] commencing slightly later and finishing slightly earlier, meaning more peak time buses will start, or finish, at Penicuik Deanburn. Easter Bush will also be served by the new X47 at peak times. No changes to the Saturday or Sunday 37 timetable or to the weekday timetable for service X37. Services 47/X47 will see a revised route and timetable, and a NEW Limited Stop service X47 - The Monday to Friday timetable is revised to improve reliability. Morning journeys from Granton from 0600 to 0745 and afternoon journeys from Ladywood departing between 1545 and 1900 will now operate as X47s on a limited stop basis between Surgeons Hall and Mortonhall Crematorium. All X47s will serve Easter Bush. There will be minor changes to both the Saturday and Sunday 47 timetables. Page 6 2 Unlike the X37 which is geared-up for city-bound commuters, the X47 market is different in that most students and staff at Easter Bush are travelling out of the city in the morning peak, and back into the city in the evening. The choice of stops to be served by the new X47 reflects the results of a survey on existing 47 journeys. Those bus stops with the highest demand as uplift or drop-off stops have been selected. Once the service is introduced, further surveys will take place, and the operator will listen to passenger feedback. If need be, the operator will revisit the X47 stopping pattern in future network changes. Service 40 Revised route in the Musselburgh area, with resulting changes to the timetable. 40 buses will operate a one-way clockwise loop from Musselburgh High Street [outwith Police Station] via Mall Avenue [past the First bus depot and Tesco], Olive Bank Road, Newhailes Road [Lidl], North High Street [Brunton Theatre] and Bridge St back to Musselburgh High Street [opposite the Police Station]. Buses will take layover at Newhailes Road [the bus stop opposite Lidl]. Passengers will be able to sit on the bus through the terminal point to complete their journeys [boarding before the terminus to ride towards Penicuik, or boarding along the route from Penicuik and riding across the terminus to North High Street or Bridge Street]. Minor timetable changes associated with the route change will be introduced. Service 49 Revised route and timetable on Mondays to Fridays. 49 buses that terminate short at Sheriffhall Park and Ride will be extended to and from Dalkeith Campus replacing peak journeys on service 33 as well as a new daytime service to the Wester Cowden area. This will provide a bus every 30 minutes for this newly built part of Dalkeith from 0630 to At the weekend there will be minor changes to both the Saturday and Sunday timetables, along with some changes to the evening timetable on all days of the week. There will be no bus journeys to/from Wester Cowden in the evenings or on Saturdays or Sundays, but if usage of the daytime weekday 49s grows healthily, evening and/or weekend services may follow. Service 67 New later Monday to Friday evening journeys will be introduced departing Easter Bush for the City Centre at 1902 and Contra-flow journeys in each peak will no longer serve Straiton Park and Ride in order to reduce journey times to and from the City Centre. Nightbus Service N3 On Saturday and Sunday mornings the N3 journey at 0115 from the city to Gorebridge is so busy that it is causing capacity

concerns. A new N3 journey will be introduced from Haymarket at 0034, arriving Birkenside at 0131, to relieve the pressure on the Lothian usually aim to have their new bus timetable leaflets available about two weeks before the date of any service change. This would place leaflet distribution right on the Easter weekend. It remains to be seen whether the leaflets will be ready before or after Easter. RAIL FARES WENT UP BY 1.1% ON 2 JAN 2016 Britain's rail passengers saw a 1.1% rise in average fares from 2 January The Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents train operators and Network Rail, said it was the smallest annual rise for six years. Regulated fares, which include season tickets, are capped at no more than July's RPI inflation rate of 1%. Page 6 3 SCOTRAIL CLUB 50 OFFER FOR EARLY Club 50 members are able to take advantage of a New Year offer from ScotRail - a 16 flat fare is available for travel until 19th March. SCAM WEBSITES OFFERING BLUE BADGE SERVICES A small number of scam websites have been set up purporting to assist residents in making their application for a Blue Badge. 5 NEW ROAD OPEN AT GREENDYKES SERVICE 111 The spine road through the new residential estate between Greendykes and The Wisp has been substantially complete for some months, but was not adopted by The City of Edinburgh Council until the end of last month. On the afternoon of Thursday 28 January 2016, the new road [called Milligan Way in the latest A-Z of Edinburgh atlas] was opened to through traffic. Page 6 5 The 111 service operated by Prentice Coaches of Haddington since May 2015 was registered with the Traffic Commissioner to use Milligan Way since introduction, although a temporary diversion via Jack Kane Corner and Craigmillar has been operated for over six months. Accordingly, as soon as Milligan Way became available, Prentice diverted the 111 on to the road that it should have been using since May This has noticeably improved timekeeping and reliability on the 111 in the first two weeks of the new way of reaching the ERI. Service 111 is a daily bus service run by Prentice under contract from East Lothian Council and partially supported financially by Midlothian Council. The primary function of service 111 is to link various East Lothian towns and villages with Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but as it passes through Midlothian it gives a bus link for the Midlothian villages of Millerhill, Newton Village, Hilltown and Cauldcoats. There are 8 or 9 roundtrips each day Monday to Saturday, and one roundtrip on Sundays timed for hospital visiting. VIRGIN TRAINS ADDS 22,000 SEATS AND 42 TRAIN SERVICES PER WEEK ON THE EDINBURGH LONDON ROUTE FROM MAY 2016

Eight new Edinburgh-London services per weekday Services every half an hour for most of the day Booking horizon extended from 12 to 24 weeks Thousands of 25 fares released to celebrate 25 services a day from May 16 Virgin Trains has been given permission to introduce 42 new services a week between Edinburgh and London from May 16, boosting seat capacity by 22,000 a week on the route - that s an increase of nearly a third (32%). Page 6 6 Customers travelling between the two capitals will see four new services daily in each direction from May 16, ensuring a half-hourly frequency throughout most of the day on Mondays to Fridays. Two additional services will be added on Sundays. The timetable boost is expected to lead to an upsurge in cross-border travel and comes as Virgin Trains undergoes a 21m refurbishment of its fleet including brand new leather seats in first class, new standard class seating, carpets and lighting. Tickets for the new services will go on sale later this week after the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) approved Virgin Trains timetable plans. To celebrate the introduction of the services, Virgin Trains is releasing thousands of 25 Edinburgh-London fares (in each direction) for the new timetable, which will see 25 southbound services per weekday from Edinburgh. These will be on sale for two weeks from Friday 19 February. In a further innovation, Virgin Trains is extending the booking horizon during which it is possible to book tickets - from the industry standard of 12 weeks to 24 weeks, making it easier to plan ahead for holidays, visits and other trips. The move has been welcomed by the UK and Scottish governments respective transport ministers. UK Rail Minister Claire Perry said: This is welcome news for those travelling between Edinburgh and London. Virgin Trains are delivering on their commitment to bring extra services and seats to this important route. Derek Mackay, Scottish Government Minister for Transport and Islands, said: This increased frequency of cross-border Virgin services between Edinburgh and London is good news, giving passengers more choice of services and helping to spread the pressure on existing services. I welcome these enhanced timetables, the greater connectivity they offer between Scotland and the south-east of England and the benefits that they will bring to the rail passenger experience and economies of locations along the route. David Horne, Virgin Trains Managing Director on the east coast route, said: This is a major boost for our customers travelling between Edinburgh and London who will be able to catch a train every half-hour for most of the day. We have seen how increasing capacity and frequency adds to the popularity of train travel and we re confident that customers will respond positively to these changes. Feedback on our new train interiors, many of which have

been fitted out at Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh, has been positive and customers are telling us they love the fresh, new look. More than a million people travel on Virgin Trains Edinburgh-London services each year and the route already enjoys a half-hourly frequency at peak times. The timetable boost comes after Virgin Trains took over the east coast franchise in March 2015, promising to drive up standards and attract more people to rail.
