4 What bus do I need? Although travelling to Winstanley College is easy, we have a number of buses that operate differently to each other. For example, we have Private buses in which the College goes out to tender for those services and Greater Manchester buses provided by Transport for Greater Manchester. The first thing to ask yourself is Am I using a Private or Greater Manchester bus? Once you know this, you ll be able to look up your specific timetable and route much easier in this document. 5 Travelling to Winstanley. a quick and easy guide! Getting started Whether you are using the Private College Bus Service (also known as outside the Greater Manchester boundary) or any of the bus services provided by TfGM, (Transport for Greater Manchester) this transport guide will provide you with all the information you need in order to get to Winstanley safely and on time as well as giving you information on costs. We ask that students and parents familiarise themselves with the contents of this document. It s safe Our dedicated bus parking bays lie within the College grounds at the main entrance. This enables the College to provide a convenient, easily accessible, central point for buses arriving and departing in the security of the college grounds. A few basic important points You need to show your bus pass for each journey made (otherwise it s going to be full fare!) Work out the best method of transport for you in good time. Check out inbound and outbound journeys carefully as they may be by differing bus numbers and different bus operators. Apply for any bus permits prior to the start of term. You need to be at the bus stops at least 10 minutes before the bus is due, especially in the first few weeks of term. Don t forget to hold your hand out to stop the bus. Keep within the College Bus bays, do NOT move towards the buses if they are parked on the main road. The drivers are instructed not to open the doors so please wait till they approach the bus bays. Behaviour Everyone knows that you should behave on buses, but are you aware of what could happen if you don t? Bad behaviour can upset other passengers and put their safety at risk, in addition the bus operator may even decide to withdraw his services altogether. We ask that students are respectful and polite to the driver and other passengers and occupy seats where possible (no standing is permitted on any of the private buses). Students are not permitted to take up two seats. Any incident regarding bad behaviour can be reported via the Transport Issues Icon on the intranet and will be investigated. 6 What Next? All you need to do is go to either section 1 for the timetables for the Greater Manchester Buses or Section 2 for timetables for the Private Buses. It is important that you carefully read all the information and understand the timetables. Greater Manchester buses can vary in bus number, size and colour from the morning journey and the afternoon journey. For example, students may board a Stagecoach 960 bus in the morning but going home it maybe Finches 962. *Please get your son or daughter to know which bus to and from College they need. 7 SECTION 1 - STUDENTS IN THE GREATER MANCHESTER AREA This section only applies to those students living within the Greater Manchester Area. College bus services are provided by TfGM (Transport for Greater Manchester) and the College has no control over timetables and route This bus pass allows you to pay half the adult fare. The permit currently costs 5.00 for the year. Please refer to page 13 for summery of fares. What do I have to do to get one? * Please note that return tickets are NOT transferable between different bus operators. You are advised to bring two passport sized photographs on enrolment so they can be stamped by the College along with the application form which is provided during enrolment on the Transport stand. You will then need to take your application form, photos and birth certificate to the Travel Shops located at various bus stations throughout Greater Manchester with 5.00 to get your permit. PLEASE NOTE You will be charged the full adult fare if you board the bus without a permit. The above Scholar s permit will only be issued to those students living within the Greater Manchester boundary and has to be renewed each year. ROUTE & PICK UP POINT Wigan Bus Station, Stand 8.15am (side of post office near Unite Union Office), then the bus will take the following route nonstop to College. Wallgate Wigan, Pottery Road Wigan, South Gate Wigan, Warrington Road Wigan, Victoria Street Wigan, Billinge Road Highfield Wigan, Pemberton Road Highfield Wigan, Winstanley Road Winstanley College. Both Express Services will do the same route in reverse for the journey home and departs College at 15.55pm. 13

15 LUNCH TIME BUS DEPARTURES Lunch Time Buses These are provided by Transport for Greater Manchester so the College has no influence to increase or request additional bus services. The only bus services that will operate over lunch are as follows:- 13:25pm (Stagecoach) Highfield/Marus Bridge/Worsley Mesnes/Wigan 13:25pm (Diamond) Ashton/Golborne Centre/Lowton/Leigh Bus Stn 13:30pm (Diamond) Highfield/Poolstock/Wigan Students can also use the Public Arriva 352 bus from Orrell Train Station into Wigan which runs every 15 minutes into Wigan. Lunch time trains may also be available back to Wigan and may be ideal for students living in Pemberton/Daisy Hill/Hindley etc. We have provided some helpful tips to help students using the buses, please can you familiarise yourself with these before you start College. Greater Manchester Bus Tickets It is important for students and parents to understand the difference in bus passes to get value for money. Bus passes vary from one bus operator to another so it is easier if students are familiar with their bus number and who the bus operator is. Bus tickets are NOT transferable between two different bus operators. Option 1 Scholars Concessionary Permit By showing the driver your concessionary permit, you are able to travel at half the adult fare. Some bus operators implement their own tickets (as they are commercial services) so check on the list below to see how much you will have to pay. You take your passport photo and application form to the Travelshop (located at bus stations) and pay They will then provide you with your concessionary permit ready to use on your first day into College and will last for one year. Students pay the driver each time they board or they show the driver any other valid permit. This permit is only valid for 5 days a week from home to College. Option 2 System One Travel Card Weekly ticket without concessionary permit This allows students to travel on any bus within the Greater Manchester boundary, at any time, 7 days a week. Therefore, it gives students more flexibility but it may not necessarily work out any cheaper, have a think about how much you use the buses, if you regularly use buses at weekends and evenings then this may be the better option for you. Be careful and make sure you ask for the right System One, always ask for the Young Person (16-21) as this will cost you for 7 days travel. 16 Section 2 Private Bus Services and Students outside the Greater Manchester Area Winstanley College operates a private contracted coach/bus service for those students living outside the Greater Manchester boundaries (and a small area within Greater Manchester) in the following areas:- * Lancashire (Burscough, Newburgh, Parbold, Skelmersdale, Aughton, Ormskirk) * Cheshire (Warrington, Culcheth, Croft, Winwick, Haydock) * Merseyside (St Helens, Newton-le-Willows, Rainford, Prescot) * Merseyside (Maghull, Kirkby) * Bolton (Bolton, Horwich, Blackrod) * Worsley (Worsley, Astley, Boothstown, Tydlesley) * Chorley (Chorley, Shevington, Standish) The above services are also known as Private Bus Services. Notes Places are only secured when payment for the annual permit is made in full via our on line payment system, Parentpay or via 10 x monthly instalments. The current cost of an annual permit is which equates to 2.00 per day. Permits are issued through College at no additional cost, however, a fee of 5.00 is charged for any replacement card. During Open and Interview Evenings, visit our Transport stand to collect a Contract of Conditions of use form and details of private bus routes available. This does not commit you to anything at this stage so we advise you to complete this on the night and definitely before the deadline which is stated on the form. We appreciate that students may be interested in other Colleges and are undecided about coming to Winstanley. Nevertheless, we still strongly advise that you complete the contract as this is the beginning of the process, without this we are unable to secure adequate seating on the buses. You are not tied into any contract or financial commitment by completing the contract, terms and conditions will apply when payment is made and it is much easier to delete your son/daughter from the list than it is to add them after the deadline. A train service departs Wigan Wallgate at 0747 and arrives at Orrell Station at 0751 College Parking Permits Students can park their car on the College car park if they display a Student Permit. The College does encourage students to use their vehicles as a last resort and to use other methods of transport where possible. There is a car parking agreement that students have to sign before permits can be issued. Further guidance on car parking regulations can be obtained from Student Services.
