2 Welcome to the fourth Great Outdoors Festival, with events across East and West Dunbartonshire. This is your chance to get out and about in some of Central Scotland s best settings: the Campsie Fells; the Kilpatrick Hills and the Clyde foreshore and all the bits in between. Walking, paddling or riding, as part of a group is fun and a great way to explore the countryside. Experienced leaders guide all of the Festival s events so there is no need to worry about getting lost. Our leaders are knowledgeable in local history and wildlife and will be glad to highlight the many points of interest along the routes. Whether you want to search for bats, forage for fungi, watch a film, climb to the top of the hills, go for a cycle or enjoy a wander along level paths, the festival offers something for all abilities. 3 How to Book Most of our events must be booked in advance as there are a limited number of spaces available on each. Please call the number or send an to the address next to the event to book your place. Some of the events require the payment of a booking fee. Walk Grades Suitable for most abilities please phone to discuss. Grade 3 - Shorter events on mainly level, surfaced paths. Grade 2 - Longer events, mainly on paths, with hilly sections. Grade 1 - Good level of fitness required, longer events usually over some hilly and rough terrain. May involve steep ascents and descents. Health and Safety On Our Events Be Prepared - Suitable clothing should be worn and footwear with good grip and ankle support. You may also want to bring a drink and a snack depending on the length of the activity. Even in bad weather the leader will be at the start of the event, although they may decide to cancel. Dogs - Dogs are not allowed on any of our events. Safety - Those participating in each event do so at their own risk and are responsible for their own personal safety. It is expected that participants observe the Highway Code and Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Families are welcome, unless otherwise stated, and parents must be responsible for their children at all times. Parking - Is not always available. 4 Saturday 30th August 1 Run Park Balloch 9.30 am Cost Join in the weekly run at Balloch Park. There is no registration, no fee and no official recording of times. The route will take in some iconic views of Loch Lomond as well as the Walled Garden and of course Balloch Castle. Just turn up for a Run in the Park. Full route available on website. Your chance to have hands-on experience of items associated with bush craft, nature and adventure. 9 Sunday 31st August 10 Across and Atop the Kilpatrick Hills 10am 5pm From Queens View head up and through The Whangie then across to Duncolm (401m) the highest point in the Kilpatrick Hills. This challenging walk will reward you with great views as you head down the towards the Clyde to finish the walk. Return to start by minibus. It's long, it's committing, it's off the wall, it's historic and at the same time it's modern. The story, is of 3 ascents of the route starting with Ed Drummond and Oliver Hill's first ascent in 1970, followed by John Arran and Dave Turnbull's ascent in 1997 and culminating in the first full free ascent of the direct line by Dave MacLeod in The cliff, the route and the film are hugely inspiring, atmospheric, exciting and visually stunning. 14 Monday 1st September 20 Fungi Mugdock 6.30pm 9pm Join Scotland's only full time foraging tutor for a fascinating exploration of the remarkable world of wild mushrooms. Learn about the crucial roles they play in nature, how to correctly identify common species, medicinal/bushcraft uses and, of course, how to find, identify and responsibly harvest gourmet varieties. There will be a wild cook-in after the walk with a chance to sample some of our finds. 20 Thursday 4th September 30 Film Night: Don Whillans Myth and Legend 7.30pm 8.45pm In the 1950 s British climbing witnessed an explosion in standards unlike anything seen before, or since and it was entirely due to two working class lads from Manchester - Joe Brown and Don Whillans. This film features some of the many epics in Don Whillans climbing career - spanning the Alps to Patagonia, Annapurna to Everest. It also brings out some of Don s tremendous humour and devastating wit. The film captures a time that is gone now. A time when political correctness hadn t been invented, interwoven with a story about a climbing genius, the like of whom we ll never see again. 24 Saturday 6th September 37 Urban Canoe Safari 10am 12.30pm and 1pm 3.30pm Enjoy an easy paddle along either the River Kelvin or the Forth and Clyde Canal. Learn the skills and techniques needed to paddle comfortably and find out about the history of canoes and the river or canal that you are paddling on. Discover a surprising amount of wildlife in an urban setting, you ll maybe even spot pike, roe deer, heron or the blue streak as a kingfisher flies by.
