2 The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park (FoTHCP) are a registered charity who look after the beautiful and atmospheric Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park on behalf of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Events FoTHCP has an exciting programme of events for Autumn and Winter 2015/16 and beyond. Visitors can take advantage of an ever-expanding range of self-guided trails, guided walks and events. FoTHCP also offers a programme of short biodiversity related courses for both beginners and professionals, covering a wide range of topics. Our events and courses programme is being constantly added to, so please check our website for updates: All profits raised from events and training courses go directly to the charity to ensure its continued success. Booking Many of our events are free but when booking is required this will be clearly stated. Please visit our website at to book your place. You can also call us on or contact@fothcp.org All events start from The Soanes Centre, E3 4PX. Concession rates are available for FoTHCP members, students, over 60s and Tower Hamlets residents. Each event begins at the Soanes Centre, E3 4PX. Donations are welcomed. Every Tuesday, 10am 4pm Weekly Drop in Volunteer Day Come for all or part of the day. Find a job or task that suits you and your interests, and help the Friends in caring for and developing Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. 1st Sunday of the month, 10am 4pm 6 Sept, 4 Oct, 1 Nov, 6 Dec, 3 Jan, 7 Feb Practical Nature Conservation Project Join the Conservation Volunteers in the park. Each month we carry out a different conservation project. Training, equipment and tea provided! 2nd Sunday of the month, 2pm 4pm 13 Sept, 11 Oct, 8 Nov, 13 Dec, 10 Jan, 14 Feb Grave Research Join members of the Friends and of the East London History Society in recording grave inscriptions, and learn more about the occupants of the Cemetery Park. 3rd Saturday of the month, 10.30am 12.30pm 19 Sept, 17 Oct, 21 Nov, 19 Dec, 16 Jan, 20 Feb Bow Beasties Wildlife Watch Club Family-oriented activities Experience the magic of woods and wildlife! Free, seasonal, outdoor nature activities and games for kids and families. 3rd Sunday of the month, 2pm 4pm 20 Sept, 18 Oct, 15 Nov, 20 Dec, 17 Jan, 21 Feb Guided Walk Come along for a guided tour of the park and learn all about its fascinating burials and/or its fabulous flora and fauna. 3

Meet the Friends and discover our fascinating heritage and fabulous nature. Guided history walks will take place at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm, with a nature walk at 2pm. Not to be missed! Free No need to book All welcome 4 Sunday 20 September, 6.30pm 8.30pm Go Batty! Learn all about these fascinating mammals of the night sky. We supply bat detectors to help you identify the species that are swooping around and to listen to them chattering as they hunt for food. 3 (under 8s free) Booking essential All welcome
5 Thursday 8 October, 9.30am 1pm Wild Food with Forage London Join John, of Forage London, for an exploration of the park. Along the way we will pick and eat various leaves, berries, flowers and roots. You will also have a chance to sample pre-made wild goodies and discuss recipe ideas. 25 Booking essential All welcome October Saturday 10 October, 9am 3.30pm Small Mammal ID & Survey Skills In this session we will cover small mammal identification, ecology, setting of live traps, surveying and safe handling of small mammals in the UK. This is a rare chance to see our native small mammals up close. Led by Jim Jones from Surrey Wildlife Trust. 22 Booking essential Ages 16+ Sunday 11 October, 1pm 3pm Autumn Herb Walk Explore the medicinal plant magic of THCP: discover what green allies abound in the woods and underfoot that you can gather and use to prepare seasonal remedies for good health. At this time of the year we will be keeping our eyes out for berries and roots in particular. 8/ 5 concession Booking essential All welcome Sunday 18 October, 10.30am 12.30pm Seed Gathering Sunday Celebrate seed gathering season at THCP. Learn how to identify common species and hopefully discover some great specimens. 7 October Half Term Tuesday 27 October, 10.30am 12.30pm Creepy Creatures Come and explore the park, and keep your eyes peeled for the creepy creatures that call it home. Make your very own sticky snake and beastly bat to take home. 4 per child Booking essential Ages 4+ (younger siblings free) Thursday 29 October, 10.30am 12pm Spooky Stories: Teeny-Tiny & The Witch-Woman Ever wondered what lurks in the wood at night? When Teeny-Tiny, In-The-Middle and Big-One linger too long after dark they find shelter in a cosy cottage. But all is not as it seems. This well-loved tale will be told by professional storyteller Helen Tozer and will be followed by forest craft activities. 4 per child Booking essential Ages 4+ (younger siblings free) 7
8 Saturday 7 November, 1pm 3pm November Knife Carving Intro Workshop A 2-hour session held outdoors among the trees, covering a variety of safe knife grips and traditional techniques in the ancient skill of knife carving. This session will be led by the Green Wood Guild, and by the end of it you will have carved your very own spatula to take home and use. 35 Booking essential Ages 16+ Photograph: Green Wood Guild 8 Sunday 8 November, 10.30am 12pm Remembrance Sunday Join us to remember the heroes and victims of war, in a timehonoured tribute in memory of those who have died in the First and Second World Wars. A two minute silence will be held at 11am. Free No need to book All welcome Saturday 21st November, 10am 1pm Autumn Tree Amble Learn how to identify trees during the autumn months. This walk will be led by ecologist Annie Chipchase, and will explore a range of native tree species. Perfect for beginners. 15/ 12 concession Booking essential All welcome

11 Sunday 7 February, 10am 3.30pm Introduction to Coppicing & Tree Cutting Join us in the woods to learn all about coupes, standards, poles and stools. On this one day, handson course we will cover the basics of coppicing and tree cutting. All tools will be provided along with tea and coffee brewed over an open fire. 22/ 18 concession Booking essential Ages 16+ February Half Term Forest School Holiday Club 15, 16, 18, 19 February Join us for Forest School at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. We ll be making fires, cooking marshmallows, building dens and learning how to whittle wood. We ll also be doing wild arts and crafts, pond dipping, bug hunts, team games and exploring the park plus much much more! 30 per session or 110 for all four sessions.
