2 WELCOME TO THE MINEWORKERS NATIONAL OPEN BRASS BAND FESTIVAL JANUARY 2018 Welcome to the Butlin s Mineworkers National Open Brass Band Festival 2018 (incorporating the Butlin s Youth Championships and Junior Ensemble). This is the 15 th year the festival has been held at Skegness and we hope that all competitors and supporters enjoy a fabulous family weekend of banding together with all the fabulous entertainment and facilities for which Butlin s is so famous for. 3 THE FRIARY GUILFORD BAND The Friary Guildford Band is a traditional brass band of 28 amateur musicians, based in Surrey, but travels across the country to entertain audiences at a range of concerts, events and contests. Originally formed in 1983, the Band takes its name from the Friary Meux brewery who provided sponsorship for the first ten years of its existance. A wide variety of music is played, including original brass band compositions, arrangements of classical works, jazz standards, hymn tunes, contemporary popular music as well as demanding technical works. VIRTUOSI GUS (BUTLIN S 2017 CHAMPION BAND) A combination of excellent music making and mind boggling mathematics saw Virtuosi GUS under MD Adam Cooke claim the 2017 Butlins Mineworkers Championship title in thrilling fashion at Skegness. A very impressive own-choice rendition of Journey of the Lone Wolf and a cleverly constructed entertainment homage to a Century of Jazz proved good enough to reclaim the Warwick Vase Trophy and 10,000 first prize for the first time since THE BLACK DYKE REUNION BAND The Black Dyke Mills Reunion Band, assembled by Simon Gresswell and featuring some of the band s most iconic names from its past. 4 5

4 SUPERBRASS Superbrass is a collective of some of the finest brass and percussion players currently working on the professional London music scene. They comprise leading musicians drawn from all the different London Orchestras, Big Bands, West End shows plus leading educators and teachers. THE JOE LOSS ORCHESTRA The big band music of one of the best known light orchestras whose name was synonymous with the TV programme Come Dancing. The Joe Loss Orchestra has been in operation since 1930 and has never disbanded or reformed. When Joe Loss became too ill to perform at the end of the 80s, leadership was entrusted to Todd Miller who fronts the band today. THE AMAZING BAVARIAN STOMPERS SNAKE DAVIS CLASSIC SAX SOLOS Legendary UK saxophonist Snake Davis and his band give us over 20 classics, including Baker Street, Careless Whisper, Still Crazy after all these Years, Respect, Yakety Yak, and his own solos from Million Love Songs, Moving on Up, Search for the Hero, and Lisa Stansfields Change. The Amazing Bavarian Stompers occupy the unique position to have been the first British comedy oompah band to be engaged to appear at a major German bier festival. Their popularity stems from the fact that this is no bunch of Bavarian geriatrics! The tremendous vitality and enthusiasm of this act is so infectious that an atmosphere of insobriety is immediately created with maximum audience participation. Their show is a rip roaring musical journey to the Bavarian Bier Kellers involving the quaffing of copious quantities of liquid refreshment en route. A perfect antidote to the rigours and stresses of modern life. The Bavarian Stompers reputation of being the best oompah band in Britain is well founded. 6 7

6 VENUES WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK SKYLINE PAVILION The big white tent is the heart and soul of your weekend. It ll probably be one of the first places you visit and a regular haunt throughout your weekend. There are shops, bars, cafés and more. CENTRE STAGE This is where you ll find live bands performing. With amazing sound and lighting and plenty of bars, this is the place to enjoy some fantastic live music. REDS The competitions will be held in this venue, plus you ll be able to enjoy some great bands in the evening. JAKS For family disco and 11pm for adult disco. THE SUPERMARKET 8am-10pm For all your holiday essentials, freshly baked products and beverages. SPA Treat yourself to a relaxing treatment. We also stock a full range of luxurious Spa Find products. If an evacuation of a venue becomes necessary, please follow instructions given to you by our trained staff who will direct you to a place of safety. If you have an accident whilst on resort, please inform Guest Services who will arrange for medical treatment to be provided. SWIM SAFE Before entering the pool: Remove jewellery it must not be worn on the flumes or slides, and lifeguards cannot accept responsibility for looking after it. In the interest of hygiene, please shower before swimming. Inflatable toys or boats are not allowed in the pool. We want to ensure everyone s safety so please make sure that swimming shorts are above the knee. Whilst in the pool: Our Royal Life Saving Society lifeguards will be on duty. Please listen to their instructions which are for your safety. Diving and jumping are strictly prohibited. Please observe the pool depth markings. If you require first aid, please inform a member of staff. All non or weak swimmers should not go out of their depth. Height restrictions may apply on some slides SPORTS Maximum/minimum numbers may apply for some activities. Late arrivals may not be accepted for some activities. Activities may be subject to weather conditions. RESORT SAFETY To enable you to fully enjoy your stay with us and to ensure your safety, please ensure that you and your group are familiar with the information below. 13 CCTV Butlin s Skyline Ltd. operates a CCTV system in several venues and around the Resort. All roads within the resort are subject to the Road Traffic Act in the same way as public roads. It is therefore an offence to be in charge of a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs. DEPARTURE INFORMATION Please vacate your accommodation by 10am at the latest on Monday.
