St. Mary s Church South Hartismere Benefice September 2018 September is traditionally a time when churches and schools hold their Harvest Services to celebrate the abundance of food that has been locally grown and produced on our farms, smallholdings and in our gardens. This year the weather the beast from the east in the winter, and months of hot dry weather during the summer have played havoc with the crops, and the harvest came earlier than usual. We have been hearing about climate change for some time, but it seems that we are now beginning to see the impact it is having. The church is at the forefront of caring for the earth, supporting fairer trading, and working with developing countries to maximise their capacity to grow food. Our local churches also do their bit to support these charities and express our care for God s world in our worship and teaching; in how we look after our buildings and land; in how we engage with our local community and in global campaigns, and in the personal lifestyles of our congregations. Some of our churches are working towards being an Eco Church. This is an award scheme by A Rocha UK s for churches in England and Wales who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God s earth. Our vision is for our churches to care for creation as an integral part of loving our neighbours and following God faithfully. 8

The Waveney Wanderers AKA Shitz n Titz Jane Wheeler and Karen Lomax are work colleagues and friends. Jane has always enjoyed walking, reading maps and planning trips, but Karen definitely doesn t! However, Karen started walking in January 2018 after a change of circumstances in She needed an activity to improve her health and fitness levels and to get her out of the house. Jane had not been able to walk far for a few years due to health problems with Crohn s, however after various unsuccessful medications and treatments, Jane had stoma formation surgery in January 2018, and was then able to get out and about again, with walking as her recuperation activity. They started to walk together in March 2018, and walking has given them both a new-found freedom. Their first challenge was in April 2018, 12 miles around the North Norfolk coast. Karen likes and needs a challenge and Jane would like to complete a long-distance walk, so after some discussion, the Waveney Wanderers walk was born. They are walking in aid of Crohn s & Colitis UK and Cancer Research UK (specifically Breast Cancer research) hence the name Shitz n Titz! Crohn s as Jane was diagnosed with Crohn s in 2014 and the charity has provided her with 10

a wealth of support and information and Breast Cancer research as Karen has close family members who have been touched by the disease. So next April, from 13 19, Jane and Karen will be walking the length of the River Waveney from sea to source, a distance of 70 miles, in 7 days. They will be following the Angles Way from Great Yarmouth to the source of the Waveney, near Redgrave and Lopham Fen, and finishing at the Cross Keys pub in Redgrave. As well as sponsorship, Jane and Karen are looking for companies/businesses along or near the route to offer donations or raffle prizes for their Prize Raffle which will be drawn at the end of the walk. In return they will promote your company/business on their promotional material. Their aim is to raise a minimum of 1,000 ( 500 for each charity) and they are pleased to say that, at the time of writing, they have already raised 420, 250 of which was generously donated by their main sponsor Clarke and Simpson of Framlingham, and have already received raffle prizes from Sole Revival, Gressingham Foods, Susan Whymark, The Three Rivers Campsite, The Cross Keys, Heywood Health and Fitness, and Somerleyton Hall, with more promised by other companies! You can find Jane and Karen on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and WordPress. If you are able to support their charity challenge in any way, however big or small, or would like to join them on a training walk, or buy raffle tickets, please them at thewaveneywanderers@gmail.com or visit their MyDonate page at mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ waveneywanderers 11

John s Local History Home Sweet Home Homelessness and the lack of affordable housing are once again in the national news. Looking back through old newspaper reports, the condition of Suffolk cottages did not live up to the popular chocolate box image we have grown to love. This report produced by Dr. Hunter is from 1865 and although featuring villages far and wide, Yaxley does receive a mention. Seven houses were mentioned in Kentford; only one had more than one bedroom, and in it was one of the smallest families. In another one bedroom house were 5 adults with 4 children; in another, a married pair with their 4 adult sons and 2 young children. To ease the overcrowding an extra bed was made up in the kitchen! The cottages were let at an annual rent of between s, however that was about 2 months wages for a farm labourer. These cottages were flint built under a red tiled roof but lacked a proper fire grate, the embers were just held in with loose bricks. Outside was the usual basic privy, a well and a small garden. At Gazeley there were some modern cottages of flint and brick with slate roofs. These had two bedrooms, which was just as well due to families consisting of ten adults and children being an average. For some reason there was an influx of workers coming in from Moulton and Needham whilst Gazeley men endure compulsory idleness. Dalham received a similar report but did mention the poor wages of 9s. per week (45p). There was a large proportion of elderly; the wages too low to retain the young who have left for London or to Cambridge. Two points for comparison so far with our modern times: foreign labour (although from neighbouring towns) and the younger generation moving away to seek better jobs. Moving closer to home to Yaxley where only one single bedroom cottage was visited. It housed 6 people. Nearby 5 adults and 5 children lived in a two bedroom home. Construction was generally clay walls under a thatched roof with a small garden; however, allotments were available for 10s 6d (52p) annually. Several of the cottages were in a bad state of repair and a grim joke on the advantages of lying a bed and seeing abroad was often heard. I think translated that means, the cracks in the walls were so wide a person didn t require a window to see outside whilst lying in bed. The old workhouse (Guildhall) had been made into four cottages, the outbuilding had been put into repair and each cottage was let with an allotment for 4.10s annually. They were of good size with brick base and chimneys, the rest of clay construction. In one of Mr. Welch s houses (he owned Yaxley Hall Estate), the tenant had shifted his bed from time to time to avoid the holes in the thatch through which the rain dribbled in. This practice has gone on for some time and there is nowhere dry left to move the bed. The thatch, which was fifty years old at least, 12

was worthless, but unfortunately so were the walls; no repairs would ever be made, and it was only a question of how long people poor enough could be found to inhabit such a ruin. Sometimes when an old house of this kind has been divided into two, one owner is for maintaining it, the other for letting go. One half gets re-roofed; the other displays its naked joists and rafters showing through the crumbling plaster and ringwormed thatch. The Thornham s come in for praise with a special mention of the generous Lord being better than any other in Suffolk. Little Thornham cottages are described as being in decent repair and the land much prized. In Great Thornham the houses were well repaired and the tenants prosperous and grateful; in no instance did the reporter learn of any service or condition imposed upon the people in return. You don t get us; we re part of the Union As well as looking into the state of housing, an annual sanitary report was carried out for the Hartismere Union which contains many items of interest to give a good idea about the general heath of people living in the surrounding villages including Yaxley. This report was published in 1885 and I ve selected points of interest. The Union is divided into three divisions: Botesdale, Eye and Mendlesham, and has a population of 12,411. The death rate at 16.2 per 1,000 compares favourably with other rural districts in England. The population of Eye division (that strangely excludes Eye itself) is 3,616. This area includes Braisworth, Brome, Oakley, Occold, Redlingfield, Stoke Ash, Stuston, Thorndon, Thornham Magna and Parva, Thrandeston and Yaxley. 417 district births were registered; sadly the mortality rate for children under five years old was 32.6 per cent. The number of district marriages recorded continued to decline from a high of 120 in 1880 to 88 in Seven principal zymotic diseases that include small-pox, measles, scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough, typhoid and diarrhoea caused only 11 deaths, half the normal average. 49 cases of scarlet fever, 8 outbreaks of diphtheria and 5 outbreaks of typhoid are mentioned, luckily, not one case of small-pox was recorded. An unusual job was the Inspector of Nuisances, the person appointed issued 334 notices for sanitary improvements. They featured 47 new privies built, 120 old ones repaired and cleansed, 11 old ones removed from objectionable situations, 58 houses provided with new drainage, the drains repaired in a further 41 and 18 houses cleansed after infectious diseases. The list goes on but I like 14 accumulations of manure removed and 10 instances of swine and other animals improperly kept removed. The water supply came in for 13

attention as well, even more than usual owing to scarcity on account of the dry season. In addition to specimens visibly bad, a chemical analyses of a further 29 samples showed 10 to be good, 8 as moderately good and 11 as quite unfit for drinking or domestic use. To improve matters two new wells and four ponds are to be provided. Offensive trades were kept under supervision, in one or two cases cautions have been necessary, which it is hoped will prevent a recurrence of the nuisances complained of. Yaxley had a knacker s yard which frequently received visits and summonses. I hope that after all the unsavoury sanitary inspections the person responsible washed their hands because there was also an inspection of Bakehouses. These came under the recent factory and workshop act of I have inspected 33 bakehouses in the district, and found them generally well kept, and any suggestions I made were well received and acted upon, so that I had no occasion to take any further action. I m not sure of a reason behind the inspector s further comment: I have reported to the Inspector of Factories the fact that women are employed in these bakehouses in 30 instances. In conclusion: The duties of the Inspector or Nuisances have in my opinion been satisfactorily carried out. You might very well think that, I couldn t possibly comment That famous quote from the 1990 s television series, House of Cards, is the most appropriate comment that I can add to this unusual report that I discovered dating back 185 years. Before getting into details I would just like to provide some more modern examples. Jerry Hall aged 59 married Rupert Murdoch aged 84. Crystal Harris aged 26 married Hugh Hefner aged 86. Consider now, how often are the roles reversed? On Thursday May 16 th 1833 this brief editorial was published not only in our local newspapers, it also appeared in the London Post. A few days ago was married, at Yaxley, near Eye, Suffolk, John Woods, aged 17 to Sarah Friend aged 67. The bride has been blind for the last 54 years, during which time she was supported by the parish. Nearly 500 persons were at the church to witness the extraordinary union. I ve looked further into the life and times of the happy couple only to discover this entry in Yaxley s burial records. Sarah Woods, July 25 th 1834 aged 70. W of John. Looks like she lied about her age, although she may have turned 68 shortly after the wedding which means she could have honestly been 69 when she passed away. Can t begrudge a year here or there, can we? John Hawes 14

Jan s Poem September The first of the bers is September Mellow fruitfulness and mists rolling by The start of the Autumn upon us, Orange hues in the cool evening sky. September means conkers and apples, And blackberries juicy and black, It means logs to be chopped for the winter, And left by the door in a stack. Back off to school for the children, New lunch boxes, school bags and shoes, The uniforms pressed nice and crisply, In reds or in greens or in blues A quietness descends on the landscape, The combines are back in the shed, The harvest is in, all is peaceful, A pleasant month it has to be said. 27 Now that the Parliamentary summer recess is almost over, I m getting ready to return to London and the daily business of Parliament, but I have very much enjoyed spending the summer at home in Suffolk and getting back to the grass roots of being a constituency MP. We ve certainly enjoyed some consistently warm summer sunshine this year, some would argue too warm, but I have particularly enjoyed meeting a great many of you as I visited and opened a number of village fetes and summer events. It s always lovely to see families spending quality time together outdoors enjoying the very best of Suffolk life. I m sure our farmers can also breathe a sigh of relief as the harvest has been safely gathered, without the constant interruption of wet weather disrupting things. At the time of writing, I m delighted to learn of the Government s drive to create stronger communities as part of a more caring society. Proposals will include significant reform across the public and private sectors looking to build a fairer society, with people, communities and charitable organisations working together to make decisions about delivery of public services. As well as encouraging councils, businesses and the voluntary sector to work together, this initiative will also importantly deliver 165 million of funding to further support community foundations, and to set up new organisations to help get disadvantaged people back into employment, and tackle social exclusion. The initiative aims to boost charities and allow them to play a greater role in the delivery of public services. Government alone cannot tackle the complex challenges facing our society today, such as loneliness or homelessness, but it can help to bring people and resources together to provide more joined up services and initiatives across our communities. Here in Suffolk, we have such a strong sense of community and I am proud of the great work that already goes on across the county. In fact, Suffolk is already ahead of the game, with a great track record of working collaboratively to deliver public services in new and innovative ways, resulting in more cohesive services and delivering better value for money for the people who live and work here. Crucially, the new Leader of Suffolk County Council, Matthew Hicks, has started out on an extremely positive footing, with his commitment to work collaboratively across Suffolk, with the other councils, health and businesses. I certainly join him in that ambition. Together with our colleagues, we can help secure the very best for the residents of Suffolk. As with other issues, despite the financial challenges, in Suffolk we will continue to lead the way. For more information, please visit my website 27
